Anchored: A Summer Romantic Comedy Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 117 ratings

I didn’t mean to blurt out that the ridiculously handsome physical therapist at Sunny Shores Retirement Home is my fiancé. (Spoiler alert: he's not.) But hey, at least my grandmother—the one recently diagnosed with dementia—is thrilled for me. Which makes lying to her feel so much worse, especially since my actual love life has sunk to the bottom of the lake.

My favorite memories are those magical summers at Grandma's cabin in Anchor Lake. The ones filled with cannonballs, sunburns, and my first crush. Well, guess who's now renting that very cabin and strutting around like a walking men’s fitness magazine cover? Yep, my childhood crush (aka: the hot physical therapist turned fake fiancé). Except now he comes with bonus muscles and designer glasses that make him look like Clark Kent's hotter cousin. And apparently, he's allergic to shirts. (I'm not complaining, but my ability to form coherent sentences sure is.)

Thanks to the town being packed tighter than a tin of sardines with tourists, we're now playing house in Grandma's cabin. He thinks his ADHD makes him challenging to live with, but after dating my ex (a two-timing toad), this guy's like a breath of fresh air – or maybe that's just the lake breeze talking.

As we investigate Grandma's mysterious health decline and uncover love letters that suggest she was quite the heartbreaker back in the day, I'm starting to wonder: will this fake engagement lead to real heartbreak, or is Anchor Lake about to work its romance magic one more time?

This standalone summer romantic comedy contains excessive shirtlessness, sunburned skin, awkward family dinners, impossibly bendy yoga poses, senior citizen conga lines, eardrum splitting karaoke, and the very real possibility that pretending to be in love might not be pretending after all. Anchored ends with a firework explosion of happily ever after love for all parties involved.

“I want a re-do,” she whispers, eyes hooded and unfocused.

For a second, I think she means dinner. But when her eyes lift again, I know she feels everything I’m feeling right now. There’s desperation in her blue irises that has to be mirrored in mine.

“Our first kiss,” she clarifies. - Maple

Anchored: a story that will make you smile, giggle and laugh out loud. You will step into the lives of Holt and Maple, feeling as if they've always been a part of your life. This isn't just a feel good happily ever after; oh no. It's a tale that perhaps you, yourself, may have already lived. Second chances at love don't always come around.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Always a pleasure to delve into Marika Ray's sweet and saucy tomes! Anchors a-weigh readers! Hang on tight, it's going to be a wet and wild ride!

“you finally trusted yourself, came home, and found your soulmate.”

They were each other’s first kiss when they were barely teens one summer. Years later they find each other again back in Anchor Lake fake engaged.

Maple is visiting her Grandma Gracie after a fall and a dementia diagnosis when she accidentally said she was engaged to Holt. Holt was her childhood crush and first kiss. Holt didn’t hesitate helping out Maple and so he went along with it.
They find themselves in close proximity sharing Grandma Gracie cabin. They were each other’s first kiss for a reason, the attraction is definitely still there. But not only is Maple only there for summer, she’s also hesitant to start anything with Holt especially after her cheating ex. Can this summer love survive or would it lead to more heartbreak?

A fun summer romcom with a bendy yoga instructor and a physical therapist who hates wearing a shirt. These two are making me rethink about getting into yoga 😉 😜.
But there’s so much more to Maple and Holt, I love how they genuinely like each other and support each other no matter what especially when some of their own family members just don’t quite understand. They may have started a fake relationship but these two are the real deal!

Anchored is a perfect, quintessential summer story told with Marika Ray's signature humor and heart. This would be a perfect vacation read.

    • Fake engagement with her grandma’s physical therapist
    • Forced proximity in the cabin on Anchor Lake
    • Opposites attract
    • Childhood vacation crush to lovers
    • No third act breakup
    • Family mystery solved

Holt and Maple met as teenagers during the time Maple spent her summers in Anchor Lake visiting her Grandma Gracie. It was during one of these summers that they both experienced their first kiss with each other.

Several years later, after being contacted by her Grandma’s doctor regarding concerns related to her health, Maple finds herself back in Anchor Lake.

Upon her return, Maple is surprised to learn that not only is Holt her Grandma’s physical therapist at the retirement home where she now resides, but he is also renting Gracie’s cottage where Maple was planning on staying.

When Grandma Gracie confuses Holt as Maple’s fiancé, they do not correct her based on her failing memory and do not want to upset her. Holt agrees to help Maple by keeping up the charade. In addition to being forced to share the cottage due to the lack of any other options, seeing as it is the peak of tourist season, and their “fake” relationship, Holt and Maple find themselves investigating a mystery involving Grandma Gracie and an unknown man from her youth.

This book is one of the best feel-good books I have read in a long time. It deals with the feelings of being less than by both main characters and perfectly shows how acceptance by someone else can make you feel seen and change your impression of yourself. It is packed with love, laugh-out-loud moments, amazing chemistry, mystery, and a well-deserved HEA.

I highly recommend it to any reader looking for a perfect beach read or just an overall heartwarming story.

Maple is a young woman who is compassionate, thoughtful and very independent. Her Grandma Gracie means everything to her and when Gracie needed someone to help her, Maple didn’t think twice about running to her side. No one else had the “time” to care for the matriarch of the family. This is an all too common occurrence when it comes to caring for the elderly. Gracie loves her full life at the Sunny Shores Retirement Center, but many residents are dropped off by family members who never visit them again.

Gracie and Maple had a teary-eyed reunion which turned into all smiles when handsome Holt, the Physical Therapist, stopped by to check on his favorite patient. Maple and Holt shared a tender moment back when they were teenegers which neither of them had ever forgotten. Their second chance at friendship was just what the doctor ordered as they spent the summer caring for Gracie, and enjoying time at the lake while taking a trip down memory lane. Gracie enjoyed being with Maple, flirting with Holt, and taking her own walk back in time to when she was young and in love.

Gracie is my favorite character because she loved to have a good time, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and embraced her future with happiness, positivity and love. Maple and Holt are a special couple who always put others first, aren’t afraid to shed a few tears, and vowed to make every day count. Together, they brought joy to Gracie’s world, made her smile, and showed her how much they both loved her. Summer romances come and go but the magic of Anchor Lake cast a spell on all who believed in love and it was a joy to see everyone so happy!
