Predictions for each year of life go back to the earliest times of Hellenistic astrology. Elaborated by Persian and Arabic astrologers who emphasized the revolution of the nativity, known today as the solar return chart, annual predictive techniques then spread eastward into India and westward into Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. For the first time, this book draws together material on annual predictions from ancient and medieval authors writing in Greek, Arabic and Sanskrit, demonstrating their methods with a wealth of present-day example charts. While covering historical background and principles of interpretation, 'Annual Predictive Techniques' is above all a manual of practical astrology, a guide to concrete prediction intended for intermediate students. Separate chapters are devoted to illustrating the use of primary directions and profections together with anniversary transits. The reader is then shown how to integrate these techniques step by step with the solar return chart. The final chapter discusses ways of subdividing a year and identifying times of major importance.

About the Author

Dr Martin Gansten has studied and practised traditional astrology for more than thirty years. Since the publication of his textbook 'Primary Directions: Astrology's Old Master Technique' (2009), he has taught this important but often misunderstood method of prediction to students worldwide in workshops and online. Much of his academic research concerns the history of astrology, and he has taken a particular interest in the transmission of Perso-Arabic (Tājika) astrological teachings to India, culminating in his translation of the voluminous Sanskrit work 'The Jewel of Annual Astrology' (2020).

Fantastic to see, not just the techniques described, but also the author’s experiences and personal opinions so frequently shared; even when when the techniques don’t deliver consistently in practice. Some of the aspect narrative can read a little like word soup, but there are ample reference charts to play along at home with.

My one arguable difference is that the author has chosen to display all charts in the book using the krishnamurti ayanamsa. I have studied both krishnamurti paddhati and the current "vedic" methodologies, but from further readings of the Yavanajataka, Surya Siddhanta, and many classical Hellenistic texts....I believe this to be a VITAL MISTAKE by Martin gansten. We no longer live in the times of Vettius Valens or Sphujidvawja. A shift of precession has occurred and I feel that this is the MAJOR DEFECT in Gansten's case example justifications. I will say this is his WEAKEST publication of the 3...with the HAYANARATNA being the superbly masterful one. I bought this as an addition to my library collection but failed to be convinced of his personal approach upon reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bien écrit, clair et assez innovant

5.0 out of 5 stars Eminently readable and thoughtfully structured
Reviewed in India on March 28, 2021
Despite its technical nature, Gansten's book is as enjoyable and readable as a storybook. It does not matter whether you use the tropical zodiac or the sidereal, you will find a great deal here that is of immediate practical value and which you can start using in your practice right away. Those who might already be familiar with the concepts and techniques dealt with in the book, will find new clarity that will illuminate their understanding of how the different levels of predictive tools dovetail and lead to precise predictions. Written more than a decade after Primary Directions, the book exemplifies Gansten's maturity and wealth of practical experience.
