Anything But Accidental: In the year 2165 there are still people who can’t be bought or frightened off. But they are a dying breed. (The Backdoor Angels Book 1) Kindle Edition
‘It’s not really the kind of behaviour you’d expect from a police unit, is it?’
‘Not if they hope to reach pension age.’
People who don’t dance to the tune of the Superior Planets Company tend to have accidents. Roland’s unconventional unit attached to the Metropolitan Police in London has a file full of them, while rumour has it that someone high up in The Company has videos and rewatches them at his leisure. Mar, Roland’s one-time lover, thinks she knows who that someone is. And when the accidents start happening disturbingly close to home, the chief tasks him with trying to prove it.
‘I want you to go to the Moon,’ the chief said, as if he were asking Roland to fetch them both a cup of tea.
The first full-length novel in the series, chronicling the rise and fall of Roland’s ill-fated unit, aka the ‘VIPs’, and the emergence of the mysterious Backdoor Angels.

About the author

When Matthew Kipwell watched the moon landings in July 1969, he assumed that by the time he grew up, the place would be dotted with shiny moonbases. What happened? After a few years working in Africa, a career as a programmer and systems analyst and another as a technical translator, he gave up waiting for NASA and the world’s richest men with their big toys and decided to imagine what it would be like.
The Backdoor Angels series is a about the struggle for justice, exile and unrequited love. So far.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2022Having read this in it's first addition, I was surprised at how much fun it was to read it again. And reading this a second time after reading the rest of the series, I can definitely suggest that at least reading the short stories that come before this one to get a maximum enjoyment the first time through. But you will probably want to come back and read it a second time anyway.
This is a complex story with interesting characters and an intricate plot. The world building was well presented without taking time from the story itself. While not quite a dystopia, it certainly is a bit dark.
The rest of the series definitely builds on this good beginning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different world - but have things changed?
The book builds a curious and complex new world for you to follow and fall into, but behind it all is the same old seedy and corrupt establishment, showing that the more things change, the more they stay the same. That reality gives you something strong to hold onto as you try to work with the lead characters to fit the pieces together. The series has got off to a good start and promises to be fun!
