About the author

Darren Shan's real name is Darren O'Shaughnessy. Although he is Irish, he was born in 1972 in London. He moved to Limerick in Ireland with his parents and younger brother when he was six, and has lived there ever since.
Darren always wanted to be a writer. He bought his first typewriter when he was fourteen and never looked back. He enjoyed his first taste of literary success at fifteen, as a runner-up in a television script-writing competition for RTE in Ireland, with a dark comedy script titled A Day in the Morgue.
Darren was seventeen when he finished his first (unpublished) novel, and wrote lots more unpublished novels over the next several years. All of his early books were adult-oriented. Although Darren liked the idea of writing a children's book one day, he considered himself an adult writer first and foremost, and his initial breakthrough was with an adult book, in 1999, titled Ayuamarca (since re-released as Procession Of The Dead).
In January 2000, Darren's first children's book, Cirque du Freak, was published. The opening book in a twelve book series about vampires (titled The Cirque du Freak series in the USA, but known as The Saga of Darren Shan in the UK and the rest of the world), it attracted rave reviews and an ever-growing army of fans known as the Shansters!
He followed up his vampire saga with The Demonata, a series about demons. Running to ten books in total, The Demonata cemented Shan's place as the Master Of Children's Horror.
Then came The Thin Executioner, a one-off fantasy novel, which Darren has cited as his favourite out of all his books.
Next he wrote The Saga Of Larten Crepsley, a four book prequel series to his original vampire saga, spanning two hundred years in the life of the title character.
Darren then turned to zombies, in the twelve book Zom-B series, which was both his grisliest series (detailing a zombie apocalypse) and his most political (calling attention to the dangers of not taking a stand against racism and fascism). He also wrote a short, tie-in ebook called Zom-B Circus.
There was a very successful manga adaptation of Shan's Cirque Du Freak series, drawn by the Japanese artist, Takahiro Arai. It was originally serialized in Japan, but English-language omnibus volumes are now on sale in the USA and UK.
His most recent series is Archibald Lox, an urban fantasy series. It was spread over nine short books, which were later collected into three large trilogies.
In addition to writing for children, Darren has published a number of books for adults, starting with The City Trilogy, comprising Procession Of The Dead, Hell's Horizon and City Of The Snakes.
He followed up the trilogy with a one-off supernatural thrilled called Lady Of The Shades, only available in the USA as an import.
After that he started publishing his adult books under the name of Darren Dash. His Darren Dash books span many different genres -- to date has has tackled horror, science-fiction, thrillers, and even a Shakespearean-inspired Comedy!
By 2023, Darren's books were on sale in every continent, in 40 countries, in 32 languages, and have been children's bestsellers in America, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and other countries. The books have topped adult bestseller charts in Hungary, Japan and Taiwan. In total, Shan's books have sold over thirty million copies worldwide.
The movie rights to Cirque Du Freak were bought by Universal, and the first movie (which combined elements from the first three books in the series) was released in October 2009, starring newcomer Chris Massoglia as Darren Shan, along with a wide array of established stars such as Josh Hutcherson, John C Reilly, Salma Hayek, Willem Defoe and Ken Watanabe. The movie was called Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. It was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February 2010, and is usually available stream on at least one of the major streaming platforms.
A big film buff, with a collection of more than four thousand movies at home, Darren also reads lots of comics and books, and likes to study and collect original artwork, especially comic art and impressionist and post-impressionist art. Other interests include long walks, watching soccer (he's a Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland fan), listening to pop and rock music, theatre, worldwide travel, sampling the delights of both gourmet cuisine and finger-licking junk food, and dreaming up new ways to terrify his readers!
Darren spends most of his time in Limerick, Ireland, with his wife Bas and children Dante and Gaia.

Shan proves once again that he is a master of momentum with the second installment of the Archibald Lox series.
We pick up Archie’s story one year after returning to the Born and his old life, but we don’t stay for long. Our two favorite assassins return, and Archie discovers another hidden talent he never knew about. Once the old gang gets back together, it’s a non-stop ride through fun, friends, love, life, loss, pain, and dark moments where everyone must decide what they stand for.
In part one, Archibald Lox and the Forgotten Crypt, we see a darker side of the Merge where secrets and promises run deep. This part recaps a lot of Volume 1, so any reader could pick up with this volume and piece together the events and characters, but I still highly recommend starting with Volume 1. One thing I love most about this part of the Volume is that we get to see Archie grow as a locksmith and uncover more possibilities as to who he really is. We also get a hint that perhaps not everything is as Inez thinks it is in the Merge. After all, things can get muddled in the Merge. Part one ends on such a high note that readers will immediately turn the page and start part two.
Part two, Archibald Lox and the Slides of Bon Repell, takes me back to reading Shan’s Saga of Darren Shan/Cirque du Freak series. No main character is safe with Shan, and he takes Archie (and the reader) to a very dark place that tests everyone’s resolve. Under the guise of the Grop tournament, the young prince is kidnapped. Everyone wants something in this middle installment of the Archibald Lox series, but everyone’s intentions are one-sided and blind. I love Archie, so reading his ordeal was heart-wrenching but also very worth it as the events served as the catalyst that was missing for many of the characters.
Part three, Archibald Lox and the Rubicon Dictate, rounds out this middle Volume and leaves the reader on such a satisfying yet longing platform. I wanted to follow our new friend as they and Inez explore the Merge, but I will have to follow Archie back to the Born where he belongs—for now.
Shan’s Archibald Lox Volume 2 is a quick read but creates such a depth to the Merge that readers can reach out and touch it. Despite being much older than they appear, the characters are relatable and so diverse that there is someone for every reader. I would love to see a series that follows Hugo or Inez or Winston or loyal Pol or feisty Baba Jen and the troupe. So many characters, so little time.
The Archibald Lox series will, if it continues the way it is, will take its proper place beside all of Shan’s series where they can be read and reread, with each rereading revealing a new layer to the story as the reader ages.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2021Format: KindleArchibald Lox, better known as "Archie" to his readers, has faced quite a lot since that fateful school day, when he first followed a mysterious girl pursued by two killers into an unknown realm. Our unlikely hero has had the misfortune of being thrown into near fatal run-ins with nightmarish creatures, deadly assassins, and rivers of blood, while at the same time, relishing in the jaw-dropping wonders the Merge has to offer to a living boy like him. It's been quite a ride so far for our locksmith protagonist, but his role to play in plans way beyond his comprehension have just begun, and continue in Volume Two of the Archibald Lox chronicles, The Kidnapped Prince.
Just as eager readers hope to experience while diving into any epic young adult story, Archibald Lox fails to disappoint. Whereas the first omnibus (the Missing Princess) introduces us to a wide variety of characters, and takes us on a tour of the fantastical and precarious corners of the Merge, Volume 2 digs its grip into its readers tightly as the other shoe begins to fall, preparing us for what is sure to be an epic conclusion. If Darren Shan's talents of successfully hooking a reader are showcased in Volume 1 (books 1, 2, and 3 of the series), Volume 2 (books 4, 5, and 6 of the series) is absolute proof of his ability to send said reader's world into a tailspin. Darren Shan's classic formula of capturing the attention of bibliophiles, young and advanced alike, has once again been proven to be a triumph in his latest young adult series, Archibald Lox.
I, a self-proclaimed Darren Shan fanatic, have been lured time after time again into his stories of magic, horror, and heartbreak, and through Archie and Inez's journey, I find myself comforted by being once again embraced in the welcome majesty of his weird and wonderful worlds.
There is something for everyone in this latest release from the masterful mind of Darren Shan. Whether you're a returning Shanster, or a newcomer to the curiosities of the Cirque Du Freak, Demonata, and the Merge, the adventures of our heroic locksmith are guaranteed to take you on a ride you'll never want to disembark.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2023Format: KindleAnother excellent volume in the Archibald Lox series. The politics are interesting and the books are slowly becoming a bit more grim in tone.
A couple of cons for me:
-grop (I don't find it very interesting). I found myself skimming the sections concerning grop.
-the stakes (the stakes feel too low in my opinion).
-character development - sometimes it feels like character development takes a backseat ride to the plot.
On the positive side, the romance blooming between Archie and Ghita is heartwarming and the solidifying friendship amongst Inez and Archie is excellent! The plot is top notch as usual and the world is simply magical. Also, the grim aspects introduced in book five gave the series the little spice that it needed.
Overall, this was an excellent read. I can't wait to continue with the final volume in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm an enormous fan of Shan. Having read nearly all of his works, I can say Archibald Lox has a totally different vibe, whilst retaining the incredible world building and encapsulating ideas. The books are very conceptual and make you think about death, the beyond and your own morality.
I would recommend it for all ages, its a beautiful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume 2 is simply brilliant.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved the first three books in this series by Darren Shan and this second volume certainly doesn't disappoint. It was so wonderful and exciting to return with Archie to the world of the Merge and be reunited with great characters from the first volume of books and meet new ones as well. I love how these books are so well written and have a really good pace that makes you turn the pages very quickly. I just can't wait to read the next books in the series. And if you are a fan of Darren Shan or someone who has never read any of his books I couldn't recommend these books enough. Just excellent stories. 10/10
