Arctic Fire: Gay Romance Kindle Edition
Haunted by what he lost in Afghanistan, Captain Jack Turner is at a crossroads. While the last place he wants to go is the Arctic, at least the routine mission gets him out from behind his new desk. But he starts off on the wrong foot with the Canadian Ranger guiding him across the forbidding and dangerous land, and Jack would rather be anywhere than sharing a tent with Sergeant Kin Carsen.
The Arctic is in Kin's blood, and he can't seem to leave the tundra behind. He wishes he could live openly as a gay man, but the North isn't as accepting as the rest of Canada. Although he's lonely, he loves his responsibility as a Ranger, patrolling the vast land he knows so well. But he's on unfamiliar ground with Jack, and when they're stranded alone by a blizzard, unexpected desire begins to burn. Soon they're in a struggle to survive, and all these strangers have is each other.
This gay romance from Keira Andrews features forced proximity, hurt/comfort, opposites attracting, love where you least expect it, and of course a happy ending.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow, Keira does not disappoint; her Gay romance novels have a good balance of heat & passion and tender romance. When I first started reading her novels I thought the sex scenes were a bit too graphic and frequent, for my tastes, however I have to say I've warmed up to them ;-) I'm actually starting to find they do create and interesting balance to her stories, raw sexual passion coupled with tender heartfelt emotion. I very much enjoyed "Arctic Fire", it was set in a very interesting location, with very well developed characters, nail bitting suspense and very heavy romance. Keira has a gift for writing M4M romance and although I find her books well paced and executed, I'm always disappointed when they're over; her books tend to be rather short, quick reads and I would love for them to be a bit longer; I look forward to spending time with her characters, after a long day and I actually find myself closing the book quickly, so I can savor it for a few days, but ultimately it doesn't work and I find I'm going through her books ridiculously fast. I Love M4M novels that are heavy with the emotional depth/vulnerability and loving romance and Keira's books definitely delivers!

This was a really good story. I liked both Jack and Kin and enjoyed their story.
Jack is a Captain in the Canadian military and openly gay. He was assigned in Afghanistan for a while and had a lover there that he lost violently, while almost dying himself. Jack recovered from his injuries but hasn't felt like he belonged anywhere. He's been working desk duty until his commander asked him to go on a tour with the Rangers in Arctic Bay to consider the possibility of a training post there.
Kin is a school teacher who also is a Ranger part time. Kin's mother was local but his father was a Scotsman that was in the area for mining. They never got married and Kin's father has moved around all his life. Kin left Arctic Bay for college but the land was in his blood and he had to come back. Unfortunately, his people don't even have a word for "gay" in their language so Kin keeps his orientation to himself.
Kin is the leader of the local Rangers and the one that takes Jack on a tour of the tundra. They get off to a rough start, mostly due to Jack's lame attempt at humor that is mostly just him sticking his foot in his mouth. Despite their rough start, when they get away from civilization and relax a bit, they find they actually get along very well. Both men are attracted to the other but are afraid to let on because of their working relationship (among other things) but situations happen that bring about a revelation that brings them together. I can't say too much without giving things away but I liked them together and how they seemed to find something they both were missing in each other. The story ends with Jack and Kin working out a way to be together.
This was a very enjoyable story. Jack was a good guy...maybe he tended to mess up first impressions by sticking his foot in his mouth but that happens. Kin was an interesting character and I liked him. My only complaint about this book is that I wish it had been longer. However, there are still some possible issues that Jack and Kin will have to deal with to get their HEA so I suspect there may be a sequel (not that I'd call the ending of this a cliffy, it was decently ended). Overall, I found this to be a very good and engaging story and I'd recommend it. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022Format: KindleI love a survival/stranded romance so I jumped right into ARCTIC FIRE! Keira Andrews does a great job of setting the scene and really showing the beauty and danger of the Arctic circle; I was getting cold just reading this. The romance happens pretty fast in this one but Jack and Kin do spend a lot of time together and have some major soul searching conversations. I really liked Kin and how connected he was to the land and the Inuit side of his family. He was a dedicated and steady person and that contrasted pretty well with Jack's slightly grumpy side and the struggles he was experiencing after his tour in Afghanistan.
My biggest issue with ARCTIC FIRE was how unsettled the ending felt. Jack and Kin have admitted their feelings but I'm not sure how they're going to work out their issues. Jack is still a higher rank than Kin and that would continue if Jack gets approval to for the new base in Arctic Bay. Additionally, Kin was very adamant that his community wouldn't accept him being gay, including his mom and step-dad and that he would lose the respect of the other Rangers which could lead to him losing his job. None of that is figured out and it made me question how and if these two would work things out and stick together through some really hard times.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOk, I'm not big into war, forgive me for not knowing...lol. But I'm curious what the deal was. Was the little girl an unwilling decoy from the enemy, or was the bomb planted on her body? I would have liked a little more explanation as to what happened. I guess it's not important, I get the idea. Still, I wished I understood. No biggie. I enjoyed the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoy this author's work. I have read some of the best books from her! This story was nice but it wasn't the most riveting of hers. Maybe because it was short, the characters didn't feel very developed to me. And although the MC had been through some traumatic times, he didn't seem depressed until near the end of the story when he had a bit of a melt down. It all tied up very neatly, too. It was almost so perfect that there wasn't much reality to it at all.
Even a book with a cheesy title like "Kidnapped by the Pirate" was more realistic to me. And amazing, btw! Her book "The Station" was incredibly emotional and her book "Valor on the Move" was highly entertaining but also full of some intense drama. Check them out!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExcellent characterizations. It is believable and real. The ending is not unexpected. All occasions flowed naturally, and made sense. You will enjoy this story!

5.0 out of 5 stars The beauty in the detail
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNo matter what book of Keira's I'm reading I'm never left feeling that the world that the characters inhabit is real. I don't know how accurate this depiction is of an Arctic community, but the key point is, it feels like it could be, and that is down to good research and writing.
Another lovely exploration of trauma here, with Kin and Jack, this time particularly delving into grief and how it moulds us.
I would have loved an epilogue or follow up to see how they got on,but still a beautiful tale.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis novella is fantastic. It's setting in the Canadian Arctic makes for a really interesting read, and there's so many little details that make it feel like the author really did her homework on the area. The setting really makes a difference, as Jack, visiting military officer and Kin, Inuk local and officer in the Rangers, face off against the terrain and each other.
My only complaint? I wanted it to go on forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Everyone has something to hide.” - That is this book in a nutshell.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKin and Jack broke my heart and I fell a bit in love with both of them. Arctic Fire deals with the emotional repression and guilt after the death of a brother for one and a lover for the other. Their grief is different but it connects them. I loved their characters, their banter, that it wasn't just the isolation that drew them together, it was shared interests. There isn't much of a supporting cast, there are some but is mostly these two men dealing with their trauma, their attraction. It's really effective. The backstory is revealed over time and is largely kept a secret from the reader until it isn't then it's there and it's devastating. I would love to see Arctic Fire get a sequel like Cold War did. There are issues that Kin and Jack need to sort out. And this is a world I'd bet even most Canadians know little about. So there is something of an educational opportunity there, because who says our romance fiction can't be somewhat educational and spark an interest in something. As well as being a super good time.
Arctic Fire is a novella. It's short, it's a fast read I read it in less than a morning. But it was an enjoyable morning even if I was emotionally messed up for at least some of the time. I loved the plot, loved the characters, loved the way the isolation was achieved and dealt with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too short
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed the story and the characters. Sadly it is way too short. I would have liked to read more about the relationship and the overall plot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite My Thing.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI live in Canada, way way way further down than Nunavut, so I thought this might be an interesting tale to read. The main thing I've learned now is that I never ever want to go that far north, ever! The dichotomy between these two men gave an interesting twist in, what I found, a rather slow story, I'm sorry, it just didn't quit grab me. The description of the land was fascinating but, like their horizon, it just didn't change. No disrespect to the author intended.
