As You Are: Self-Improvement Not Required Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

What if the problem isn't you, but the relentless pursuit of self-improvement?

As You Are offers a refreshing alternative to the constant pressure to be more, do more, and achieve more. It’s time to get off the hamster wheel of constant growth and unlearn the self-help hustle.

It’s a compassionate yet no-nonsense guide for the recovering perfectionists, over-doers, and personal development junkies who really just want to be more of themselves in the world. It's a resource for authentic living in a world obsessed with self-optimisation.

Drawing on personal and industry experience, this book challenges the prevailing narrative of constant self-improvement to offer a fresh perspective on doing ‘the work’. Instead of focusing on what you should be doing, this book invites you to remember who you are, find peace with uncertainty, and stop the incessant search for your purpose.

  • Recognise your inherent worth without tying it to achievements
  • Embrace clarity as an ongoing process
  • Find value in your present self, not just your potential
  • Build resilience through flexibility, not toughness
  • Prioritize presence and authenticity over constant striving

It's time to step off the treadmill of self-improvement and rediscover the joy of simply being. As You Are is an invitation back to your own agency and leadership.

Choose presence over perfection. Choose self-acceptance over self-criticism. Choose to be here, now, rather than always reaching for some imagined future self.

If you’re starting to suspect there might be a more graceful way of engaging with life, you might just be in the right place.

Vix Anderton is a perfectionism and productivity coach for chronic over-doers, overthinkers and stressed-out control freaks. She helps them turn their inner critic into an ally and find powerful and sustainable ways to get on with what they care about without overwhelm and burnout.

Vix served in the Royal Air Force for 10 years before entering the international development sector. With her experience in high-stress environments from war zones to boardrooms and a resulting burnout, she is now committed to helping other recovering perfectionists learn how they can manage their energy and emotions and reconnect with their natural flow, intelligence and creativity, thus enabling them to build more sustainable and authentic ways of being.

Having lived in as many houses as years she has been alive, Vix is now settling on the Indonesian Island of Bali with her husband and 3 rescue kittens. She can be found at Ecstatic Dance, learning to hula-hoop or enjoying one of Ubud’s many vegan cafes.

Vix offers coaching and online courses for recovering perfectionists. You can find all her current programmes at www.vixanderton.com.

I've just dug into and am enjoying this short, digestible, and very readable book.

Recently returned from four years in Bali, an island full of workshops and retreats for personal development and the endless quest for bettering oneself, I couldn't help but wish I'd had access to some of these ideas sooner.

The author is as much an advocate for rest as for hard work, for sitting with the void as much as orienting toward purpose, for sitting quietly in a clearing of one's own life, stripping away the noise, and hustle, and ambition, and allowing oneself to feel toward the future, instead of rationalize and action toward it.

If you need a permission slip to stop the hustle and grind, and allow yourself to wonder what it would look like if life contained more pleasure and peace, in service not only of yourself but of showing up in service for something larger than yourself, look no further.

A definition of being authentic to our true expression. A must-read for all those struggling with the one-size-fits all self-improvement movement.

What a breath of fresh air! Just reading this book has opened my heart and given me some freedom. But I know I will need to spend more time with all that she is pointing to. It took many decades for me to learn all of the shame and perfectionism and success pursuing I have suffered under, so it will take me a little while to unlearn and let go of what is not helpful and learn to have a different relationship with myself, reality, and the rest of the world.

Sorry, my review may be a little scattered. But, that's okay, right? It's who I am. I don't need to be fixed!

If you have a sense of lack and you want to fix it, good luck. There are tens of thousands of self-help books out there (which don’t work or people wouldn’t keep writing them). Or, you could let Vix walk alongside you on a journey out from all the pressures and paradigms that haven’t been working for us into a life that is more free, more real, and ultimately more full of meaning and happiness.

Are you a perfectionist? Have you lived most of your life trying to get ahead of the voice that tells you you’re not good enough, or need to work harder, or just need to find the right program? This book has come along to rescue us from all of that mostly fruitless energy spent.

There is another way. Vix is here as a guide, pointing the way and suggesting questions to guide us out of A LOT of thinking, being, feeling, and doing that have not been working.

As I read her new book, I found myself thinking that turning everything I had thought about how to be happy and fulfilled in this life on its head actually turned me right-side up.

Succinct. Bite sized, thought provoking, soul provoking, heart provoking, body provoking insights and questions. No additives, artificial flavorings or sweeteners. I'm going to keep going back to it. Every time I open it, it helps me unlearn a little more. I will be journaling about all the questions she brings up.

If you made a list of all the words you think are on the path to self-actualization and happiness, Vix is going to help you question what they all really mean, and what may actually work much better for us than the vast majority of what we’ve been fed and taught. You know, purpose, authenticity, success, discipline, accountability, learning, goals, productivity, certainty, and resilience, to name a few. She opens our eyes to what thinking and pursuing life as we’ve learned has been doing to us, and she invites us to consider letting go of all that and embracing a much more freeing way of being.

She’s not going to fix you, or help you fix what you think is wrong with you. She is going to walk alongside you and help you ask questions about all the ways what you have been doing and thinking have been leading you away from the life you want and the person you are, rather than toward them.

We haven’t gotten what we thought we were supposed to get because it’s impossible. Vix invites us to let go of the thinking and pursuing that hasn’t been working (and ultimately can’t work), and shift toward a way of being that embraces who we are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acceptance of myself and all my imperfections

"I love Vix style of writing as it sounds like she is speaking directly to me. I resonate with her description of being a 'Recovering Perfectionist' and I have found such understanding of my self though reading this book. A greater acceptance for myself and all my imperfection. I do feel a more expansive range of experience comes from implementing the wisdom in this book. I have been on a journey of slowing down to feel and experience more of what I am blinded to when I am doing too much. Thank you for putting your words into book form. CC"

This book is a great reminder that in striving for success and progress we often miss out on the gifts we already have available to us.
And that slowing down to the speed of our embodied experience is where the magic of life happens.
