- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was such a fun and engaging read. The character dynamics are so interesting to follow, and has such a great cast that you can fall in love with. This stpry does a good job of portraying different types of familial relationships and friendships, the relationship between Justice and her mother and the sisters Destiny and Beth are particularly heartwarming. The plot was exciting to follow and i found myself so enguled in what was going on, i was at the edge of my seat. And there were some surprising twists at the end, and it leaves room for a sequal that I hope we can expect one soon. I truly loved how this story centered an African American voice and journey, and used African (and other) mythology to craft this fantasy world. I feel like this story exemplifies the beauty and pride we can find within our skin. The main character is a mixed girl (in more ways than one) and she is chosen to be this hero for a race of African warriors, and dispite judgement and assumptions, she rises to the occasion. The overall theme of being mixed or half of something does not make you less-than is a beautiful message that a lot of people need and can relate to.

The author does an incredible job making the reader fully invested, and fast. Not only are the YA aspect on point, but the world of the Aziza's is so interesting you can't help but want to know everything about them! This book is extremely entertaining, and queer and poc forward which I adore. Can't wait to finish and recommend to all my friends!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022Format: KindleThe book pulls you in from the beginning! The characters are so diverse and each other’s personality and character shins through. So many levels in the storyline, but not too many to get confused. Perfect balance of fantasy, action, and relationships. My only negative comment is…..I don’t want to have to wait for the second book!! I will definitely be buying it the second it comes out!! But this book, curl up by the fire and enjoy the ride!!
