- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseClapping hands for this one. It was like watching a play that deserved a standing ovation. From the beginning until the end, I was on my toes, the action and the suspense is amazing. I loved the story and the characters; the story wasn't rushed, and the characters developed well over the story.
This story will captivate you from the first page, it's about Barros, a man who basically runs this story and is the main character, but other characters feature in this book in a way that they also hold their own. A man who went rogue and betrayed his own (hunters who hunt the vampires) by falling in love with a vampire instead of killing it. Fast forward five years later, an incident that changes everything happens...Fast forward six years later again, the story continues in a way that will leave you turning the pages...Yes, fast forward nine years later again and this book keeps getting better.
This story has everything, betrayal, loyalty, hatred, love, love gone wrong. Barros, one of the main characters, if not the main character, a father, brother, lover, friend and a traitor drives this book, his actions are what will keep a reader turning the pages, but all other characters are also the main people that make this book. His former lover, Sophia, the mother or his son, Abner. Abner who is raised by the brother of Barros, Mal and his wife Talia.
Then there are other characters that make this book that make it a must read. I don't know how the writer managed to put this into such interesting action packed - it's an amazing story. The revelations and the surprises will make you scream while reading. The book ends on a cliffhanger though, it is a series and book two continues the story. Cliffhanger or not, it's an excellent book that deserves full five stars, looking forward to reading book two and found out where this betrayal and mystery ends....
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf this wasn't an indie author, I'd probably get two stars, to be honest.
The largest issue is the random time jumps and slow history lesson. I wish the book started after the nine year time jump. Get me to jump right into the action of the story.
The dialogue is not realistic. It's often hard to follow and often unnecessary. There is too much backstory stopping the action to explain.
Great idea. The author clearly put a lot of thought, time, and effort went into creating this storyline and characters.
I was NEVER invested in the characters or the story (until the end of the book) maybe it should have started with Abnard. Maybe then I'd have cared about someone.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHunters by Matt Mememaro is a book that features a fantasy world where vampires and hunters exist. The plot of the book had a Blade-meets-Underworld-type vibe, with action and suspense that kept me hooked until the end. The characters in the story were well-developed, and each of their personalities seemed to fit perfectly with their role in the plot. The hunter, Barros, was depicted realistically, with his personality accurately reflecting the tough job he had to do. As a vampire hunter, he had to be tough and brutal to handle his dangerous prey. Although the storyline wasn't entirely surprising, I found myself unable to put the book down. The love story gone wrong between Barros and Sophie reminded me of a spy-type scenario where one person plots against and uses the other person. In this case, Sophie used Barros in her evil plan to take over the world, and Barros is left dealing with the reality of their relationship being a scam. I don’t think I’m giving anything away and there are plenty of battles and scheming that happen in the aftermath. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-packed fantasy novels with well-developed characters and an engaging plot. It may not be a completely new story but it was an entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt is a good story, but I never got sucked into the novel. I did not fly through it like other books, and it took a while for me to read. Once I realized why I was able to push through and finished the book. The reason why is due to that I never felt drawn to any of the characters, I never was able to connect with any POV.
This story follows the path of destruction one Hunter Barros, leaves in his wake after discovering his Vampire bride's evil scheme.
I never got attached to any of the characters due to the feeling that the interactions via dialog felt flat and emotionless.
Some of the character deaths felt unnecessary and rushed. Not in plot twist sort of ways.
Barros descent into madness and turn also seemed sudden, I had to go back and read previous scenes and was still confused.
It just didn't read like a Vampire novel as much as an anime or movie. Lots of actions and quick scenes, action book lovers will be able to dive right into this fast-paced novel. These pages are full of death and destruction at the hands of both a Vampire and Hunters. Dive into this novel to begin your journey in Taagras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHunters, by Matt Memeraro, had a little bit of everything. Well-written. I'm not one for spoiling the plot of someone else's work. Fast-paced, action-packed, dark fantasy adventure. It was a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, with twists and turns that kept me interested. The characters were complex, and the world-building was immersive. Memeraro's writing style was descriptive and captivating, making it easy to visualize the scenes as they unfolded. I found myself completely invested in the story and couldn't put the book down. I look forward to reading more from Matt in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story starts out intense and the pace never lets up. I like the idea of the hunters vs vampires and would have liked to read the story of Sophia and Barros romance in more detail. I can’t complain though because the book had so much going on it was hard to put down. Betrayal, battle scenes and adventure. A great read for dark fantasy lovers. Hope to find the rest of the series equally engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars To be continued…
Format: KindleVerified Purchase‘Hunters’ by Matt Mememaro is not your run-of-the-mill vampire story. It is set in the vast isle of Taagras, which would typically be associated with a fantasy saga (think The Belgariad), which might have a few demons and wizards, and is beset with blood-thirsty, shape-shifting vampires. But, like all good fantasy stories, one individual attempts to overcome the monster. Mememaro’s narrative combines a pleasant love story with vampire gore: this is a violent world fuelled by conflict between the vampires and those who hunt them. His story reveals a typical struggle for dominance alongside the mandatory quest for a magical talisman. In an almost biblical parallel, a child is born and alters the future of the land.
Barros Toldar is a hunter, highly skilled in combat with both humans and vampires and challenged to remove a vampire countess, Sophie. But instead of carrying out his mission, he unexpectedly falls for her, and they ultimately marry. But it is a short honeymoon period because Sophie’s ambitions for vampire dominion overshadows the birth of their son, Abner.
Mememaro has carefully crafted each of his characters so that they suit their roles and push the story forward at pace. While Barros is a believable and brutal vampire hunter dedicated to ridding Taagras of their evil presence, some of the supporting cast are less well-developed. What separates Barros from the usual fantasy hero is that he is not terribly likeable. The choices made by each character give reason to reflect on Mememaro’s underlying meaning and possible parallels with the real world. I particularly liked his choice of name for Abner’s sidekick, her robustness and her broadsword (Lois rushed over to support him, throwing his arm over her shoulders).
‘Hunters’ is founded on wonderful world-building. Mememaro has hit the spot here, which allows the reader to gloss over the odd idiosyncrasy in the text. This is a vividly portrayed world, and not for the faint-hearted (spoiler: it’s pretty gory). There aren’t just a few vampires to make us tremble; there are literal armies of ghoulish denizens to make your flesh creep. The narrative is nicely balanced, using light humour to temper the otherwise constant drama (gruesome or otherwise). There is also a smattering of romance (although for all the bites, there are no kisses). But what I liked the most were the battles. Memearmo’s descriptive talent knows no bounds, so for me, this is a fantasy story with vampires, not a vampire story set in a fantasy realm. However, the cliffhanger ending left me feeling the same way I did when I saw ‘Dune’ at the cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark fantasy full of action and adventure
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis adventure fantasy has many twists and turns as Hunters chase Vampires, and Vampires plot world destruction. Barros is the main character, but don’t get too attached to anyone, you just don’t know what is going to happen or who to trust. As this is the first in the series, I’m intrigued to find out what is in store for Barros’ son Abner. More excitement I’m sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Action!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an author I found by chance. The blurb, title and cover drew me in so I had to try it.
As someone who reads a lot of fantasy romance, this was refreshing as it had practically zero romance and all action. It made a great change of pace.
I loved the action, it flowed well and the concept kept me interested.
The relationship between hunters and vampires is intriguing, and I love the world building.
My favourite character had to be Rowan.
Overall, I would happily continue this series. Well worth a read if you like action fantasy and vampires!
