Purchase options and add-ons
The Terran Commonwealth has proved a nigh-unstoppable juggernaut in its war against the smaller Castle Federation and her allies, but an almost accidental victory by Captain Kyle Roberts of the carrier Avalon has opened a chink in its armor.
Desperate to change the course of a war they are rapidly losing; the Federation assembles a new forward fleet with orders to retake the systems that have fallen to the enemy.
Outnumbered but on the offensive at last, Kyle Roberts must take a hastily assembled battle group back to the worlds the Alliance failed to defend. There he will live or die by the skills of his soldiers and the honor of his enemies.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGlynn Stewart's writing style continues to progress and mature with each novel. I have found the Castle Federation series (Avalon) to be an enjoyable read throughout. If you have read the first two books in this series you should enjoy this one as well. I would highly recommend reading them in order, as there are important details about the characters which are developed more thoroughly in those earlier books, and only touched upon here.
With this third novel in the series, Stewart seems to have turned his focus more toward military strategy and tactics, and less about continued character development. He continues the theme of two warring factions in human space: the protagonist Federation as the smaller "breakaway" nation, fighting the larger, antagonistic Earth-centric Commonwealth. The storyline continues to focus on the captain and crew of the Federation carrier Avalon, which is now playing a larger role as part of a fleet assigned to take the war back to the Commonwealth.
It is an excellent space combat novel, without becoming too technical for the average sf reader. Fleet tactics and complex battles involving more ships are the main focus now. The action is engaging. I read the novel in one long sitting because I found it very difficult to put down :-)
Having said all this, I am giving it four stars instead of five, as I feel that that the characters and human elements in this story are not as well thought out as before. It is as if Stewart felt that the people were already well known enough to the reader, and no further explanations were necessary. Each character continues to act exactly as predicted by the background laid down in the previous novels. Everything new in this story revolves around the combat. I found this a bit unsatisfying, because one of the reasons I have so thoroughly enjoyed Stewart's writing in earlier novels (especially The Stellar Fox and Starship's Mage) was how interestingly the characters develop and grow during the course of the story.
However, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent novel, and I can't wait for the next installment!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story represented struggle, some victories, heart breaking losses … and a rocky outlook for Captain Kyle Roberts. It was refreshing to not know if our intrepid Captain would succeed. In one sense he did, but from other viewpoints he tasted the bitterness of loss. Given the immense resources of the Commonwealth, perhaps there is no way for the Alliance to succeed without taking aggressive risks. And that is just what Captain Roberts represents! Look forward to the next book!

It was not great science-fiction - this isn't going to win a Hugo or a Nebula. It was incredibly *fun*. I stayed up way too late reading it - once I got about a third of the way in, I could not stop until I finished it.
It's a fun military SF read - the datadumps aren't as extensive as early Weber. The hero from the first two books is back, he's as human as ever. The supporting cast is as much fun, the characters are well developed. Some of the bad guys might be cardboard, but that's could be due to lack of focus - the bad guys we get to see interacting with the good guys feel as developed as the good guys.
What's to my taste that this felt similarly satisfying - David Weber's Manticore & Dahak, Lois McMaster Bujold, Sharon Lee & Steve Miller's Liaden Universe, James Schmitz' the Hub stories.
I just bought a copy of the release e-book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was a bit slower than the rest of the series to start, but ended with a big bang!❗️
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s an okay read - if you like numbers. Way too many of “ten thousand this, four thousand that, etc. it’s like reading statistics and gets boring to the point of skipping page after page yet not missing story line
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI had the felling of Star Trek, who’s going to die. I was wrong, not to give anything away! It was interesting to the end. Again, not to give anything away, but ending was unlike books 1 and 2.
Another good read, thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the latest in a wonderful series!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have loved this series so far and the latest does not disappoint! If you enjoy military science fiction do yourself a huge favour and start with the first book - Space Carrier Avalon - then enjoy the rest.
One other note - if you're Canadian there are some fun references. They're just the gravy on this steak!
Also, check out his Starship Mage series.
I'm very pleased I found Glynn Stewart - now he just needs to write faster. *grin*
