Purchase options and add-ons
Mommy surprises Brandon with his grandma, Pópo (婆婆), and grandpa, Gōnggong (公公), when she picks him up from school one day. When they get home, the adventure begins! While Brandon and Pópo (婆婆) are making Chinese dumplings, called jiǎozi (饺子), Brandon makes a mess and he and Pópo (婆婆) have a good laugh! They chat and bond over the experience, and Brandon makes a big surprise which delights his whole family!
This adorable story includes some conversational Mandarin (in Simplified Chinese characters plus Pinyin pronunciation) and is written the way a real Chinese grandmother and her Chinese-American grandson would speak with each other. About the author

Eugenia Chu is an attorney, turned stay-at-home mom, turned award-winning and best-selling author. She is a first generation Chinese-American citizen and lives on a magical beach in Miami with her husband and son, Brandon, who is the inspiration for her stories. She enjoys reading, writing, traveling, yoga and drinking too much coffee. She has been a presenter at numerous schools, libraries and book festivals.
When Brandon was very little, the author couldn’t find children’s storybooks to read to him which touched upon Chinese culture and which included some Chinese (Mandarin) words to teach and/or reinforce his Chinese vocabulary, so she started writing her own.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2025Format: HardcoverBrandon Makes Jiǎo Zi is a story of a little boy who makes Chinese dumplings with his grandmother. An adorable and positive story on how we can make mistakes, learn and grow from it. We enjoyed the antics displayed by Brandon just like his family. The sentences are written in one language and then in another which helps us in familiarizing the characters' expressions. I also appreciate the glossary at the end with all the words used. It is a short picture book and recommend for kids aged 4-9.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2025Format: PaperbackI read this book to my 2nd graders. They loved that the author wrote the story about her son, Brandon. Her sister is the illustrator. My class said the drawings were simple, but good and realistic. The author surprised us when Brandon make dumplings into an art piece. My class also loved that this book is in two languages. Students of all backgrounds can relate to this book as dumplings are a popular food in many cultures. I recommend this book for your classroom or home library. My class read the Chinese words aloud as many of them can read Chinese.

The story beautifully weaves in cultural elements, offering a glimpse into family traditions and the joy of cooking together. The adorable illustrations are colorful, playful, and incredibly charming — they truly brought the story to life. The kids loved pointing out the little details on each page.
Beyond its entertainment value, the book also offers a meaningful lesson about patience, perseverance, and the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. It’s a wonderful way to introduce young readers to Chinese culture in a fun and relatable way.

I loved making dumplings with Brandon and his grandma and could definitely feel the love between them. As a reader, you feel like you are there in the kitchen, even if you don’t have any dumplings to eat! You’ll want to run to the store after reading this so you can join in the family fun. I also love how there are sprinkles of Chinese throughout! It adds an additional layer of fun (and education) to this lovely book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonding with Grandma
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLove that this book is now in Simplified Chinese.
This adorable bilingual story highlights the special relationship between a grandma and her grandson. Brandon and his grandma (Pó Po) make Chinese dumplings (Jiǎo Zi) together while making great memories, full of fun and laughter. I love how the author brilliantly included the pinyin/character elements into the story, so you are reading in Chinese and English together, just like you would if you spoke both languages at home. The illustrations are so cute and complement the story well. Both children and adults will enjoy this book, and it's a great introduction to Chinese culture and language. Well done!
