From the author of Uninvited: Damaged by trauma, a grown woman and a teenage boy form a destructive bond fuelled by rage . . .

Penny is a victim of rape. It leaves her emotionally devastated, alone, and consumed by anger. She strives to rid herself of her fury, but it won’t go away.

Charlie is a fourteen-year-old boy who watched his much-loved older brother die in a hit-and-run accident on a cold night in their small village. He, too, is filled with denial and rage.

These two neighbours develop a strange and unlikely friendship, fed by a shared hatred of the world. As bodies start to appear, a young girl goes missing, and their toxic union grows ever more primitive and feral. Will they ultimately destroy themselves—or each other?

Jocelyn didn't do anything sensible until going to University at the age of 40, to study a BA in BSL/English Interpreting. Subsenquently she worked for 7 years in this field, as a sign language interpreter - where she had the idea for her debut novel, 'Shh': a psychological thriller set in the Deaf community - which was long listed for the Guardian's Not The Booker Prize.

Jocelyn completed an MA in 'Creative Writing - The Novel' at Brunel University. She is currently working on her fourth and fifth books: both psychological thrillers, both coming out later this year, June and October 2024! Look out for 'Mother Said So' coming out in June! A chilling, psychological look at a man and his relationship with his mother. The Playroom, out in October, is a Marmite book - you'll either love it or hate it. Most, love it.

LOOK OUT FOR NEW PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR - 'THE DOLL' - OUT JANUARY 2026!!!

Penny Crisp has anger issues, and Butty you have to read to find out. And other characters. This is a compelling novel that grips you in the first chapter of the book. i enjoyed reading.

Thank you Bloodhound Books and author Jocelyn Dexter for this ARC. I am voluntarily leaving a review. Wow! This book keeps a grip on you and doesn't let go. There is graphic violence, sadness and a shocking twist that I definitely did not see coming. Penny and Charlie(Butty)form an unlikely friendship and this story takes off like a rocket from there. I am left to wonder what happens next.

The story centers on two very unlikable characters, at least on my opinion, Penny and Butty, who become friends and allies in a very strange way. Both of them have been hurt in a way "damaged" by their circumstances, Penny by being raped in her bedroom two years ago and Butty, in the present, by the death of his brother.
There are a lot of unsettling actions by these two, and the plot does have several twists and turns, but for me the book wasn't as engaging as I hoped it would be.

Received this book as an ARC from Bloodhound Books...Thank you! A thriller, which definitely has some dark places. Personally, some of the content was trigger for me, but reading throughout the book, and a much more developed story I enjoyed it as a fiction thriller with complex issues and twists and turns!

The story is an interesting premise with 2 unlikely people becoming friends. It is not a storyline that I would have thought of. While the story was entertaining and the writing style was great, the story was darker than I usually read. I usually like dark but this was not a book that I would want to read again.

The intriguing well -developed characters and the different types of relationships between them creates this story that will have readers wondering how they would have reacted if they were in the same situations. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever building of apprehension
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2023
Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold, but in Penny's case it was served with all the trimmings in a dark beginning to Dexter's latest novel. But we soon learn that Penny isn't the only character who feels personally disenfranchised by a shockingly disrupted life, and when she is unexpectedly thrown into partnership with a teenage boy who is in serious trouble she is presented with a dilemma which inevitably leads to an increasingly dramatic series of incidents.

In some respects, this echoes the earlier psychological approach of Patricia Highsmith, who raised uncomfortable questions of the morality of the victim. Graham Greene called Highsmith ‘the poet of apprehension’ and there is plenty of that in this book. One of Dexter’s skills is to weave interior monologue and narrative together so that characters’ introspection carries plot elements which advance the story. In this way she has given us illuminating insights into the way criminal minds can develop but without holding back the progress of the story. The reader is fascinated by the mentality of the characters but never restrained from wanting to know what happens next.

I think Dexter set out to make us feel nervous about outcomes - and she has certainly succeeded. A talented analyst of the troubled mind.

This is a great story, well written and easy to read. Although I found it hard to like the main characters the storyline kept me engrossed and interested in what ultimately happened to them both. The ending is excellent and surprised even me, a reader of hundreds of thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel, well written, not as gory as some other reviews say
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2023
This novel is extremely well written, with a few twists along the way: one of which I didn't see coming at all. I've seen that some other reviews have called it 'gory', but there's nothing excessive. A few darker scenes, but nothing the typical crime reader can't deal with. Overall, a great 5/5 read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and twisted story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 14, 2023
A convincing story of two very damaged characters who come together in an increasingly dangerous friendship. The exploration of their interior lives is beautifully done and the tension builds excitingly to the conclusion. The violence is very understated and therefore even creepier. A cracking good read
