- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2023Amazon CustomerFormat: KindleThe Haunting of Bardane Manor is an extremely well-written novella. The character development and storyline is strong. The book pulls you in right from the beginning. It is a book one wants to read in one sitting, and thankfully its length allows for that to happen. I loved it and will be looking to read more by these authors.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2023Amazon CustomerFormat: KindleI loved the main character rising to the challenge of this ghost/haunting story. She also returns in another of the author's books, the second in the Lady Vago duology (second book is much better than the first book). Looking forward to the next Ysoldette story!

4.0 out of 5 stars A slow burn gothic ghost story with a great mystery
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Haunting of Bardane Manor is a standalone novella set in the same gothic fantasy world as AKM Beach's Banshee's Curse Duology. Beach weaves a chilling tapestry of gothic horror, rich world building and a slow burn mystery paying homage to the traditions of classic ghost stories. Readers are immersed in a dark and atmospheric world where spirits return to curse their ancestors, long buried secrets refuse to stay buried and a lowborn novitiate, Ysoldette, strikes out alone to solve the mystery of the haunting.
The novella does a remarkable job of drawing on classic gothic ghost stories, creating a rich and immersive atmosphere drawing readers into an eerie, suspenseful world. The world building is ambitious, with a fantasy world that has its own fully realized religion and class system. These elements contribute to a deeper sense of immersion and make the haunting feel grounded in a larger, more complex context, adding layers to the mystery. However, this intricate world building can also be overwhelming. The reader is thrown in at the deep end with the religion and the caste system, which can be difficult to grasp at first. The novella doesn't necessarily ease the reader into these concepts, which may lead to initial confusion and a slower entry into the story. While this is a standalone novella some readers may benefit from reading the original duology to give a basis for the larger world this story occurs in.
Where The Haunting of Bardane Manor really shines is where our lowborn novitiate, Ysoldette, engages with the supernatural. The method in which she communes with the dead, through herbs and ritual tied to the world’s unique religion, is both fascinating and deeply immersive. These scenes offer a compelling mix of religious mysticism and personal involvement with the paranormal. The portrayal of the spirits and their communication with Ysoldette is one of the most engaging aspects of the novella, offering not only haunting moments but also emotional depth and a sense of mystery as her understanding of the curse unfolds.
Where this novella may lose some readers is the pacing. It is a very very slow burn story. While this contributes to the atmosphere, personally I found myself not really being hooked until about half way through and some readers may find themselves frustrated with the slower build up especially considering the brevity of novellas. However the mystery at the heart of The Haunting of Bardane Manor is skillfully crafted, with dark and subtle twists that keep the reader engaged once hooked. These twists come together for a satisfying climax, where the full story behind the manor’s curse and the spirits' motivation is revealed. The tension builds nicely offering a rewarding payoff for the reader’s patience.
The Haunting of Bardane Manor excels in its atmosphere, world-building, and supernatural engagement, offering a richly detailed and immersive experience. The mystery at the heart of the story unfolds in a satisfying way, with twists and a climactic resolution. However, the novella suffers from a slow pace that may turn off some readers, particularly those who struggle with the heavy world building and gradual revelations. Despite this, the unique approach to the supernatural and the compelling central mystery make it an engaging read for those willing to invest in its slow-burn tension.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Fantasy World
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Haunting of Bardane Manor, the first novella in the Platinum Order series, is a stylish gothic fantasy book that draws you in from the beginning with a richly atmospheric narrative and an intriguing fictional world laced with spirits and mysticism, peppered with a class system that dictates every character’s actions.
The characters are well-developed, and the main protagonist, Ysoldette is given an excellent balance of insecurity and authority as she navigates a situation she was unprepared for but must solve.
The book pulled me in from start to finish with a delicate plot full of dark and subtle twists until the ending climax that was perfect. I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great slow burn ghost story in a fantastical world
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell, this a fascinating little tale! I was immediately grabbed by the title and the concept of a haunting.
But I didn't expect this to be set in a rich fantastical world. That was a lovely surprise and I am definitely intrigued to know more about the ideas and the society that underpins the story. Ideal for the early spooky season reading.
Only one downside. Don't get me wrong, I love a slow burn story especially when it comes to tales of hauntings. But this is a novella, took me around two hours to read, but at times it did feel a little slow. Could have done with some tightening up in places. But otherwise, a solid 4/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gothic ghost story in an intriguing fantasy world
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI went into this book knowing nothing about the Platinum Order series, and I must say, I'm very intrigued by this world. The novella has a classic gothic ghost story feel to it, with the setting perfect for a cold winter read. The world-building is excellently done, and although this is a short book, I feel like I learned a lot about how the world works. The dragon-based religion is really interesting, and I'd definitely read more within this mythology.
I will say that it took me a little while to get fully hooked by the story. It's a slow, short piece, which in essence is fine, but some of the details were dwelled on too much for my taste, and I was itching for the plot to progress.
The second half of the book gripped me much more, and I enjoyed seeing the dark reason behind the haunting being unearthed and the resulting fall out. The ending was solid, satisfying the reader with the outcome of the mystery while leaving space for future installments. Ysoldette is a great main character, and I would be interested in seeing how her spiritual career progresses in future adventures.
