Basil: The Brinnswick Chronicles III Kindle Edition
When I was young, I used to dream of finding my viramore—my soulmate—in all these crazy and amazing scenarios. But then my ex-girlfriend hired a mind-bender to mess with my memories, and well, it’s no surprise that romantic notions flew out of the window for me.
I guess it’s fitting that the first time I meet my viramore, he points a crossbow at my head and threatens to kill me if I don’t get out of his way. Thing is, I’ve always liked a good challenge, and Hiro Grimbsy is nothing if not challenging. He’s kind of a jerk, but I guess I’m glutton for punishment because I can’t seem to stay away.
When dark forces threaten to take away everything Hiro and Basil care about, will they be able to work together or will they let anger, speculations, and fear hold them back?
Basil is the third book in The Brinnswick Chronicles and takes place in the same world as The Ellwood Chronicles, but can be read as a standalone novel. This MM romance contains explicit material and is intended for mature adults 18 years old and older.

About the author

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020Another amazing installment in this series and world. I love his this series connects to the previous one, with the world-building, concepts, favorite characters...all are familiar and love seeing them in each book. But I also really enjoy that there is a slightly lighter feel to these books, maybe because the overall big bad threat isn’t out there, though there is still action, creatures, and danger in each. The time line has given some of this generation time to grow up a bit too which gives the stories a nice maturity yet still balanced by the family/brotherly dynamics including humor and teasing, but always love and protectiveness.
I loved Hiro & Basil. There was some confusion and not a little angst between them but they figure things out, not an easy task between a strong-yet-vulnerable witch and a fierce but caring hunter who has never met a good witch. Well done showing the back and forth and both points of view of these hardheaded men. I liked that there was some conflict both internally in the growing relationship and externally from other threats but it was never annoying or overdone.
Rasha was completely unexpected but much enjoyed, and I wasn’t expecting how they figured out her situation. I’m also left with an insatiable curiously about Jorah’s story and will be eagerly awaiting what comes next!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2020To say I was excited when this book came out would be an understatement. This is not the first book in the Brinnswick Chronicles, but it is the one I was most anxious to read because it had to do with one of my favorite characters, Basil!
Basil is a witch, part of the revered Ellwood Clan. Hiro is a hunter, with a daughter, and he despises witches. Once again, Michele Notaro brings us adventure, action, excitement and of course romance! The world she has created is so rich and wonderfully written! Go ahead and take a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024Hiro and Basil’s story was interesting, definitely had a lot of action. I wanted to beat Hiro with a stick for the majority of the first half (approximately). I understand where he was coming from based off how witches act in his home, but he’s been in Brinnswick for (he says) like 3-4 years and he hasn’t encountered a single Ellwood? They’re everywhere! I’m glad that Bas gave him patience but also didn’t cut him any slack either, he called him on his prejudices and pointed out to him how he proved them wrong.
Ready to move on to Jorah’s book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020First of all I was a little apprehensive starting this book. Although apprehensive is a strong word because I had no doubt that I would enjoy any book in this series. I love this world the Michele Notaro has created. Basil however was never a favorite character of mine. I totally underestimated the ability truly gifted authors have to show us what is behind the facade the character puts forth.
Basil: I had low expectations for him. He seemed closed off and prickly. I could not have been more wrong. Sometimes you fall into the role that you feel like you need to be in your family. He has a deep capacity for love and nurturing. He took me by surprise and has joined the rank of my favorite characters.
Hiro
OK so he fit the bill more of what I was expecting from Basil. Here we have the character that I wanted to smack repeatedly and often in the beginning. However once he stopped and really listened and gave Basil a chance things changed for me. So much makes sense when get to see more of his life, who he really is, and why he was so closed off.
Basil is another fabulous installment in this amazing series. I will be re-reading the previous books and will be looking at Basil through new eyes!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2023Basil finally gets his story! We learn so much about this trouble magnet and finally get to understand him. Hiro is a hunter who hates witches. He has a past with them that is completely understandable. Add in a sweet little girl, and see the sparks fly. I loved this addition to the series! Highly recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2023Another great addition to the series. A little twist with enemies to lovers and rejection themes. I loved it! And of course I loved how heartwarming and sweet all the characters were. Reading about this huge family so full of love always warms my heart and makes me smile!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022This book wasn’t quite as repetitive as the last few books. Basil is very similar to Ailin, but less prickly. I think this book was helped by having a human MC, so the viramore bond was slightly more one-sided. And thus, less repetitive. The focus of the story was mostly on Hiro’s little girl Rasha and her illness. With a subplot about a serial killer of witches. We are still building up to something with the Three, but we just see a little of that here.
Decent world building, but the storytelling still isn’t up to par with some of the other authors in this space. I actually don’t recommend reading these books back to back just because of their repetitiveness, but there are so many characters to remember that you may be lost otherwise. Just like many other mm authors, all the straight cis characters are super glossed over and barely mentioned when we know everything about the queer male members of this family. The sex scenes here were better written than in some of the previous books in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2021This is a m/m paranormal/fantasy suspense romance; it is the 3rd book of the “Brinnswick Chronicles “ and should be read in order. My heart absolutely aches for the terrible things Basil has been through! I had this idea of exactly who he was in the Ellwood Series but wowza, what a flip when you see inside his head!! I love his interplay with Hiro and how their relationship builds. The suspense is killing me on who is behind everything that’s happening in the shadows! We keep getting glimpses with each additional book but no ending is getting guessed at this point!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad story, wouldnt call this romance
This will be the last book that i read from this world. Still horrified by that cold and brutal hunter. Basil deserved better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enemies to lovers
This series just gets better and better. An action packed and exciting read. Basil and Hiro disliked each other, but couldn't stay away from each other. And that ending, can't wait for Jorah's book now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay
I'm glad Basil finally got his viramore. This story seemed different from the others so far. I felt like we didn't get as much personality from the partner. I would've loved to see some flashbacks maybe like with Toby to better understand. A bit less angst as well. It felt like Basil was settling more, and wasn't really getting anything out of the relationship, just giving lots to someone who wasn't able to feel very grateful at the beginning and later just accepted help but that was kinda it.
I would've liked to see a bit more depth on the illness problem, and the murder investigation going on in the background that they kinda stumbled into.
I'm sure it's a good story for some. Just not my cup of tea. The previous books all have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!
This is the third book in the Brinnswick Chronicles and where we get to see Basil, the latest of the Ellwood offspring, meeting his viramore and trying to build a relationship with him. Hiro's past hurts and current responsibilities don't make it easy for them, though; nor does the treatment Basil has had at the hands of others in the past. These men have a lot of issues to work though before they can accept their bond for the gift it is, Hiro especially; but once they do it's obvious that they are perfect for each other. Their particular brand of snark-filled saltiness is fun, but when their underlying vulnerabilities peak out they're both very sweet.
As with The Ellwood Chronicles, the further we get into the series, the greater the feeling is that the plot is building to something momentous. The witch murders in this book are significant and the tension around the investigation is palpable so I can't wait to see what's in store next for the Three. Overall, I loved Basil as an enemies to lovers story, with wonderfully perfectly imperfect characters. The writing style and world building are absolutely on point, as usual for this author and, although this probably can work as a standalone, I definitely recommend reading the series in order. An easy 5* from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I really enjoy Michele Notaro's writing and there's something really special about the Brinnswick Chronicle books. They make for an amazing and completely addictive read.
I did love Basil and Hiro and the detail and pure imagination in this book blew me away. I will definitely be reading this series and the Ellwood Chronicles again as I know I will find even more to love!!
(Also, love, love, love catching up with the family too!)
