- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book changed my life, I ask myself how could a book do that? Read it and you’ll discover a different way forward. Wow what an amazing author. Just bought her other book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2025Format: KindleI just finished reading this little gem of a book. I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. I truly believe this book belongs on the shelf alongside The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz as required reading. It’s beautifully written, and the author had me by page 3, when my inner child had a good cry. I highlighted passages in every chapter. Each one begins with a song title, and I listened to the songs on Spotify before reading. They set the tone perfectly. I’ll be purchasing a case of this book to give to everyone I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Survivalist's Manifesto
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNeo-liberalism foregrounds the individual as a vector of freedom and agency. However, recent publications such as *Harrington, Brooke (2024) Offshore: Stealth, Wealth and the New Colonialism; Bullough, Oliver (2019), Moneyland: The Inside Story of the Crooks and Kleptocrats Who Rule the World; and Zucman Gabriel (2015), The Hidden Wealth of Nations
point out insidious Western trajectories from the post-war period onwards. They document the link between the rise of global corporations, the capture of governments by the marketplace, the draining of government resources and, in turn, the pressure on individuals to accept lower wages, higher prices and diminished public services with simultaneous demands for higher productivity. KPIs (key performance indicators) become the holy grail regulated by ambitious managers. The costs to the ‘free’ individual include harmful pressures on mental and physical well-being with negative run-on effects to family and wider social relations.
With this historical context in mind, Sedgwick’s call to individuals to exercise self-care first acts as a front-line call of resistance. Readers might regard her book as timely and valuable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A chance to explore what really matters.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSuch a helpful and compassionate book. A reminder that it is okay to pause in our busy lives, take stock and make changes that better reflect who we are and how we choose to live our lives for the good of ourselves and those we love and encounter along the way.
