- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024I found this story unique and very interesting. I haven't read a story with a cult theme, but it isn't all about that. You have a wounded in body and soul hero who was let go from the military. When I say he was troubled, he really was. I found how he acted to be true, some reviewers have not. Just know, he runs hot and cold because he has so much he hasn't dealt with.
The h is the one who was in the cult, not by her choice - she was 15 when she finally was able to leave. I had more problems with the h then I did with the H. Granted she didn't have a choice while in the cult, but she's been out for 13 years, and I didn't like the games she played at times.
Great secondary character's too, that will keep you wanting to read the whole series. I did read book 1, this is a standalone, but think you'd enjoy starting from the beginning.
Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 5 out of 5 and described many times - bedroom door wide opened. Many crude words used. I did want to know how she could afford a candy shop and where she got her training. Her adopted parents left her their house, so that was cleared up.
Many villains to choose from and I knew 100% I chose correctly - NOPE - big big curve balls that I liked the twist.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic, suspenseful, violence, intrigue and plenty of steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. I recommend this series and author. There is an extended epilogue that you'll have to download separately - free. It's worth it! (ljb)

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024From the get-go, Bent Winged Angel had me hook, line, and sinker as a top-notch romantic suspense/thriller. After the first book in the Last Refuge Protectors series, Hard Knock Hero, I was champing at the bit for Trace and Scarlett’s story, and boy, did it knock it out of the park. Trace is your classic haunted hero, and Scarlett’s got her past pretty much in the rearview, but it’s still a bit of a party crasher. When Scarlett’s past comes knocking in Hartley, Trace steps up as her human shield. I’ve got to hand it to Trace; the guy’s got loyalty and dedication coming out of his pores, even while wrestling his own ghosts, and he’s all about keeping Scarlett and her squad safe. He’s even willing to play chicken with danger to help her save the day as well as Virtue and Toby. And Scarlett? She’s no slouch either, showing some serious grit and gumption in standing up for herself and fighting for her tomorrow. The whole story was a real page-turner, chock-full of twists, turns, and enough suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat. Hannah Shield knocks another one outta the ballpark!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2025Trace was in the CIA but was prone to secrecy. He did stuff that was unmentionable. When he met Scarlet he was so infatuated that he had a hard time to keep away. No one wanted to love a guy like him, at least he thought that. Scarlet had it in her mind to open him up and help him…and her along the way. This is a must read story!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025Mostly enjoyed this book. I wish the editing team had caught all the errors. "She covered her hand with her mouth." This doesn't make sense to me.
Typos and punctuation make me nuts.
But the story itself was 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last Refuge
Absolutely loved this story. Two broken people finding true love and then onto others. A brilliant story with lots of love and intrigue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Big Yes
Bless these two sweetie pies and their found family.
For me the crescendo didnt really pitch - it was a bit of a softer lead up to the final show down which was obviously going that way. But I still liked it so it’s a big yes from me.
And honestly, I don’t think I would. I don’t really believe their chemistry at the start but it’s a true credit to Hannah Shields writing that I kept turning the page anyway and before I knew it was invested at 3am and giving myself just 45 more minutes.
