I read this book three times. I recommended it to my friend in entry liked it too! Lucille was such a relatable character, repressed, underappreciated, and tired. She took action and recreated herself, by sticking up for herself, eating better, excersizing, and murder.

Lucille's had it with her overbearing husband of 30yrs, Richard. He treats her like a maid. He's repulsed by her body and is not shy about telling her so. She knows he's cheating on her.
Lucille's inner dialogue (she's imagining innumerable ways to kill people who are getting on her last nerve), goes from "inside voice" to action when a man sneaks into her house and tries to kill her. She manages to turn the tables and kill him instead. She panics, hides his body, cleans up and instead of feeling guilt? She feels powerful...and she's not done feeling her power either and begins seeking out bad guys to kill.
She's ready to not be Lucille anymore and becomes Lucy. She joins a gym. A photography club. She quits her job because, well, he's a massive jerk and she's afraid she'll snap and kill him too. She files for divorce.
Richard most surely does NOT enjoy Lucy's transformation.

Now, she suspects someone is following her, can't puzzle out why 2 different somebodies would try to kill her in her home, and worries about being arrested for several bad-guy murders when it all suddenly comes to a head in her living room late one night. Will Lucy survive or will the bad-guys win after all?

A very different story from MM Crumley's nom de plume, MM Boulder.
A fast-moving "film noire" with dark comedy overtones keeps you guessing until the very last chapter.

This was an okay read. The main character (Lucille) was basically a serial killer, who needed to a way to vent and express her anger. Reading the book gets a little confusing, when each characters thoughts are not separated (by way of a drawn line or whole other chapter). It’s also difficult to determine with Lucille, what’s real or what is her imagination (at times).

PLOT: Lucille (alter ego named: Lucy), was a married woman, with an unappreciative tyrant of a husband, who was cheating on her. Lucille woke up every morning at 5 a.m. She cooked, cleaned, ran her husband’s errands and worked herself (she had a job). In spite of all that, her husband (Richard) saw her as a weak, pitiful and lazy woman. She was also a mother of three grown children.

One day it all changed and Lucille became Lucy. Lucille never knew that she had it in her to be so daring and dangerous. Lucy was daring and could kill at a moments notice and not even feel bad about it. Lucy also stood up to her husband.

Lucy had joined a gym, got a makeover and a change of clothes / wardrobe. She became all that Richard hated. Lucy even got herself an admirer (Henry). Richard had plans for Lucille and he wanted to get it over with, so that he could move on with his life. But, how would he accomplish it, with Lucy and her erratic schedule??? And why isn’t his hitters accomplishing the goal??
  • Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024
Lucille has been the object of her husband’s verbal abuse for 30 years. She has endured it being the good obedient wife her parents taught her to be. But enough is enough. What happens when all that pent up rage is unleashed is the premise of this story. Full of violence this is a story not for the squeamish but if you don’t mind some killing this is a truly fun tale of a woman finding her strength and making a new life for herself even if she has to kill to do it.
  • Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2020
... Isn't who or what you think it is. 😁 But That's the only hint you get from me!

Lucille has been a depressed and repressed housewife for 30 years, always catering to her demanding husband. Breakfast is the same boring menu from week to week, dinner is on the table at 6:30 sharp. She drops off and picks up has dry cleaning even though it's on his way to work, and out of her way.

Then, one evening, as she's sitting home waiting for her husband to get home, someone creeps up behind her and tries to kill her. Somehow, her anger for how her life has been going so far erupts and she uses that to not only get out of the situation she's in, but to turn the tables on her attacker and kill him before be can kill her.

While disposing of the body, she realizes how out of shape she is and, after 30 years, tired of being treated like a doormat, she decides to do something for herself for once. She joins a gym where her ego is stroked and she begins to transition from Lucille to Lucy.

But... while this was a huge part, she also realizes that she feels much better and lighter - much more calm and peaceful - after she kills.

Rather then give away spoilers, let me just say that the authors used of humor is very apropos to each situation in a wickedly disturbing way. And I had predicted the ending totally wrong!

Maybe you can guess the end better then I did!

A very enjoyable read, but I just had to take off a star for careless spelling errors (woman/women, gripper/gripper, summery/summary (ABOUT the summary of a book for gripes sake!!), etc).

The best thing about the book is the humor used. Because it's used in the context of people being killed, it may make some uncomfortable, but it's not meant to. It pokes fun at a certain phase of life, but you don't learn it until close to the middle or end, so if the humor bothers you when used along with murder, try to hold on. You'll have a reason to apply the humor elsewhere soon!

I have to say that I read a lot….at least 25 so far this year and I have never read one like this. I loved it. Talk about girl power!! I think there may be a little Lucy in most of us. We’re just not as crazy as she is. I recommend this to any one that wants a little lighthearted thrill.

The first paragraph is one of the best I have read in a while and pulls the reader in, intrigued as to what will happen next. The plot is good if not a bit ridiculous in places. I enjoyed the book.
