Crown of Blood and Glass (Awakened Fates Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,765 ratings

Betrayed by a friend.
Saved by an enemy.

My closest friend has lost his mind.
He killed my father.
Took over my Kingdom,
And despite the blood that now stains his hands … he claims that we’re fated to be together.

My salvation comes from the most unlikely of sources.

To reclaim my throne I’ll have to rely on the one man I’ve hated my entire life for survival.

Solomon Winett is the noble descendant of barbarian warriors and the bane of my existence. He’s obnoxious, stubborn, and the only one who rescued me from a fate worse than death.

I just need to remember one thing: once the line between hatred and passion has been crossed … there is no going back.

Beautiful new Romantasy story
4 out of 5 stars
Beautiful new Romantasy story
“It takes a courageous soul to follow this path of blood and glass even when one is frightened.” I knew I had to read this book when I read the premise of a friend betraying a princess and stealing her kingdom. The beginning of the book delivers on this quickly but I wish we had more time to get to know Nasir before his betrayal because - man! - that sequence flew by! I hope Dev and Solo have a showdown with him in the next book because I’d love to know more of his background and motivations. This book is a glacial slow burn in a great way - the evolution of our MCs feelings and the dual POVs of their conflicted thoughts was really well done. The authors really explored how such traumatic events would leave two very different people to deal with the aftermath and I love how detailed their inner thoughts were. There are so many amazing elements of the Romantasy genre in this book 👑 Forbidden romance 👑 Royalty/noble houses 👑 One bed 👑 One horse 👑 Who did this 👑 Gods 👑 Powers These tropes are all done really well but this book really shines in the third act - I was not at all prepared for the direction this book went and I loved the side characters we meet. The cliffhanger leaves me wanting more and my heart is so invested in Dev and what will happen to her next. Her evolution from naive pacifist princess to who she is now was beautifully done! I took off one star because parts of the world building left me with questions - how is Dev a princess yet she has no idea that Solo’s house requires blood! Surely a royal would know everything about the royal houses - how can such a thing be kept hidden? I would have loved more exploration of the different houses powers and hope we get that in book 2. I truly loved this story and feel so deeply invested in these characters! Solo is such a dreamy book bf and I can’t wait for these enemies to become lovers! “The only one who can control me is the true hero. My Goddess. Devonry.” I truly appreciate the authors for sending me this book!

Devonry is a princess, next in like to be queen. In this world, royals are descendents of God's and inherit some form of power and these two things make them uniquely qualified to lead in the minds and hearts of the people. Her parents have ruled in peace and with decency, her education has centered on pacifism and against violence of any kind. She's been protected and spoiled all her life.

Until her best friend come to visit and brutally takes everything from her. She escapes with her life, the clothes on her back and her most devoted and antagonistic guard.

This story, so far, centers on a journey. The princess must evade capture by the usurper, find allies and assistance where she can and not choke out the man charged with protecting her. Not an easy task.

    Things I liked-

Princess may have been protected and pampered but she doesn't shy away from hard work, people blow her station/class, scary things, crazy circumstances etc... she works hard, fights hard and takes her vows seriously to her people and her loved ones.

The world building is just the right amount. Enough detail to feel immersive with out being overly wordy. The supernatural aspects are interesting and a little different from the norm.

The main male character is a "monster/beast" but ultimately a really devoted, protective and self aware guy. We are treated to his point of view and reasoning.

Things I'm not a huge fan of but wasn't a deal breaker for me-

This was the slowest of burns. While the chemistry is there for the main male character from the start, our innocent and unawakened princess remains sexually unaware and uninterested for the majority of the book and just as she is starting to feel a little tingling when he's nearby, the book ends. So perhaps they will eventually burn but be prepared to wait for it to happen.

I have to wait for the next book. I have a love hate relationship with fantasy book series because the world building, multiple characters, complex storylines etc coupled with my poor memory make waiting weeks, months or even a year for the next book challenging for me. Having said that I'm hopeful the wait won't be too long for the next installment..

    Finishing up-
Writing was strong, story was interesting, characters were likeable, editing wad pretty solid.

I really enjoyed this story and appreciated the slow burn romance, even if at times it got a little aggravating. Solomon is Devonary's guard and is Awakened, meaning he's received power. With the Awakening one is able to determine their mate. Solomon knows Devonary is his mate. However, she's a princess and already promised to someone else and therefore he will not confess his feelings for her. Very early on Devonary's kingdom is overthrown by someone she thought was a friend. This sends Devonary and Solomon running.

I thought the book was well written, but I did have a few issues that kept me from giving it 5 stars. One, Devonary's prim and proper attitude through the whole book. I was hoping as the book went on that she'd loosen up some but she clutched onto those pearls tightly through the whole book. I understand she's a princess and has been raised with a certain idea of the world but she was just a little too much of a prude for my liking. She was always very serious and it made her boring.

Secondly, we're told that some people can "Awaken" and receive power, but the only person we see with this ability is Solomon and as far as I could tell he didn't have any powers. Yes, he was strong and fast, but other than that I didn't see anything special about his abilities. I guess he's essentially a vampire, but he's never called that in the book. I wish the whole Awakening thing would have been explained better.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and loved that the authors didn't do the whole insta-love thing. I am excited to read the second and see if Devonary loosens up a bit and gains a personality.

So let me start by saying it's very well written and the authors are talented. I didn't get frustrated with any typos or poor wording, so hence the 3 stars.

HOWEVER.....this plot is a well known one. Pampered princess with magical abilities, loved from afar by a soldier/guard. Bad things happen, yada , yada, girl ends up on the run with said guard, etc etc etc. Romantic dwellings and gestures ensue with unspoken flowery language of love (internally, by the soldier/guard), with "confused" feelings being revealed (ibternally, by the girl). You guys know the drill.

Despite the well known tropes.and.plot of this book, I STILL could have gotten into it, but one key ingredient was missing. Nothing could get me invested in either the lead female or lead male character. It was a struggle to finish this book, and I legitimately don't care enough about them to read the second one. There is nothing here to get me invested in the characters at all. I'm not sure if it's bc of the worn plotline or the familiar tropes (magical girl, vampire guy, needs to save her 'kingdom', etc), but I just never cared enough about the characters to make me want to read book 2.

That brings said, the authors are CLEARLY talented. Just please try to find an original plotline that fits with your writing style and imagination!

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Forbidden Romantasy

I have been a fan of Rebecca Grey ever since I found Bookstagram. With the combination of these two wonderful writers, an amazing book has been created.
A crown of Blood and Glass follows two main Characters Princess Devonry and her less than polite but annoyingly handsome Bodyguard Soloman.
This is the first book in the the series Awakened Fates, and is a NA Romantasy. the slow burn and steam is not for the faint hearted.
This book is just jam packed with Character development, growth and absolute beautiful, tortuous slow burn tension.
We see our princess go from being a princess that thinks she understands the outside world to a princess that will stop at nothing to protect those who can not protect themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!

Honestly this book is from one of my favourite series. When I bought it, the hardcover was on sale and I jumped on that immediately. I love the design on the cover, flipping through the book has some beautiful black and white artwork. The book itself I would 10/10 recommend it to others.

Also, notes to the sellers.. please protect the book with more than just a box. I often get squished boxes from amazon, and I’m so lucky my book wasn’t damaged!

I loved the build up of enemies to lovers between Dev and Solo. The base story is great. There’s a lot of extra noise that was unnecessary and my eyes just skimmed over repeated bits but overall I was pleased I read it and I’m excited to see what’s next for Dev and Solomon.
