- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2025This book had many twists and turns. I could not put it down! The characters were intriguing and I enjoyed watching them progress. I'm not really sure about the relationship between Mack and the Lord Alpha, I hope to see it progress in the next book. I can't wait!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2019After falling hard for Helen Harper's writing in The Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic, I decided to try another of her Urban Fantasy books, and I was far from disappointed.
Summary:
Mackenzie Smith leads an interesting life in quiet Cornwall. She may look like a perfectly normal human, but in reality, she has spent the majority of her life living with shifters. There is nothing Mack wants more than to truly belong within her adoptive pack, but her blood just won't allow the transformation to take place. With her fiery temper, she's made a place for herself because she's handy to have in a fight. She's even made some friends. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few who resent her simply because she's human. Regardless, everything has worked up until now. When her alpha is brutally murdered without warning, Mack swears she'll get her revenge. She'll have to be careful, though, because John's death has garnered the attention of the leaders of the shifter world, known as the Brethren. The Brethren are known for being cold and ruthless, and if they were to find out Mack's true identity, both her life and those of her pack would be on the line. Mack must find a way to investigate her alpha's death, and why her small, quiet pack seems to be a magnet for attacks by Otherworld heavy hitters without revealing her true nature. That's easier said than done when the mesmerizing green eyes of Corrigan, Lord Alpha of the Brethren, don't miss a thing.

I really enjoyed reading Bloodfire and getting to know the world and characters. I admit, when I first started, I felt a bit like I was suddenly dropped into an ongoing story and I had no clue what was what. Everything was eventually explained, but it was a bit difficult to get going when I felt like I was missing a chunk of the story. Mack is a strong, smart, independent heroine, but maybe takes a bit too much responsibility on her shoulders. She's also incredibly loyal, caring and compassionate about those she thinks of as hers. I really liked her and the confidence she showed when she faced an opponent. This is not a romance, but there are some fun flirtations. Mack has an interesting relationship with the Lord Alpha, Corrigan. Their banter was entertaining, as was watching Mack try to keep her secret. Corrigan is what you'd expect from an alpha male shifter. I'm not sure of my opinion yet, though, because we don't see his POV and a lot seems to happen when he and Mack are apart. Ms. Harper definitely peaked my interest in him, and I will definitely be reading his book. In the end, I really didn't want to put the book down. The storyline was entertaining even though I puzzled out the truth of the situation pretty early on in the book. I was also getting increasingly frustrated with everyone's blatant ignorance regarding Mack's humanity. I find it hard to believe, with her skills and fighting talent, that no one ever questioned it. Supporting cast was equally entertaining and aggravating. I liked Mack's friends, Tom and Betsy, and Julia was very calm and wise. Alex was a welcome addition to the story, both for his magic and his fun personality. Unfortunately, there was also Anton who I wouldn't mind slapping upside the head a time or twenty. There were also a number of different magical creatures that are fascinating to read about. This was a great start to the series. The world building can oftentimes be tedious, but this first-in-series did not fall into that trap. The writing style was easy to read, and there was a perfect amount of descriptors to help me visualize a whole new world. The end left me wanting more, and I'm looking forward to the character growth and seeing where the story goes from here. ♡

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2015This book was ok. The setting and world were interesting. I was very interested in learning more about the main pack from London. The story was pretty decent. However I had some issues with the main character, Mack. She had an overwhelming temper and sense of independence combined with a lack of ability to intelligently plan. This along with a strong disdain for the abilities, skills and willingness of people she didn't know meant she was often causing trouble and messing up other people's plans to deal with things. It was very off putting, and I wound up skimming through a lot of scenes.
As another reviewer put it there are Reasons for her temper, but (in my opinion) good Reasons don't make it any more enjoyable to read about.
Mack's friendships with others was a little off too. We're told that she's friends with various people, but see very few friendly interactions between herself and others.
Overall, an interesting world and side characters, so I'll give book 2 a shot and hope that Mack sees some growth that includes anger management and a stronger willingness to include others in her plans and life.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014My Initial Reaction...
I am very happy that Jessica @ Rabid Reads stumbled upon this little gem and that I let her review convince be to pick up Bloodfire (BTW - are you noticing a trend? So far, Jessica has not steered me wrong!). I love the characters and I'm really excited to see where the series will go.
The Characters...
Mack is exactly the kind of female heroine I like - strong, snarky with a healthy temper that lands her bunches of trouble. Mack was raised by a pack of shifters (of all kinds from werewolves to were gerbils - a point I most definitely laughed at BTW), though she isn't one. Which is breaking a cardinal rule for shifters -- humans are not to know of their existence at risk of death. Her family of shifters are under a geis not to tell, but even without it they would almost all keep her secret, because she's part of the family - human or not. And she's part of the family, in part, because she does her part to keep them safe. She's tough and a stronger fighter than a good number of them. And when her temper gets going her blood literally boils, giving her added strength. Oh and they alpha can talk to her psychically, just like the rest the pack. Are you thinking that doesn't quite sound human? Yeah - so was I. But not Mack and not any of her pack. Thankfully I was prepared for this bit of ridiculousness from Jessica's review, so I'll just tell you that while I wholeheartedly join her in that eye-roll, it doesn't take away from my love of this book much.
I also loved most of the pack - though I seriously wish I'd gotten to know some of them better. Their genuine love of Mack - up to a willingness to risk their lives for her - quickly endeared me to them. But, while they are memorable as a collective, the individuals didn't really stand out to me much. Her best friend - Tom - is the only one that really truly stands out to me and even he lacked serious development. And that's because Mack and Corrigan, Lord Alpha of the Brethren (the group that rules the shifters and will kill all of them for keeping Mack secret), really dominated the story for me.
Corrigan was also exactly what I love in a love interest. First of all, this was most definitely not insta-love. It was pure, beautiful, antagonistic sexual tension of the best kind. He's powerful and smart and really paying too much attention to Mack - who's trying to hide in plainsight - and, therefore, putting the pack in increasing danger. He knows how to push every one of her buttons. You want to dislike him because he's head of this awful organization (at least they seem awful, because they would kill Mack's pack for hiding her) - and yet I couldn't because he seemed to not only take his responsibility seriously, but to care for the pack. But he's a problem for Mack, so instead of passion it's the best kind of sexual tension. You could cut it with a knife :D
The Story...
The story for Bloodfire all kicks off after the pack's alpha is mysteriously and brutally murdered. This is devastating for the pack, obviously, but particularly for Mack who's looked to him as a father figure. She's determined to find the murderer and make him/her pay. But the snafu is that the Brethren is coming to oversee the change of Alpha and to investigate the murder. Which means a greater chance that they could discover Mack's identity. The plan is for Mack to masquerade as an extremely weak member of the pack and keep a low profile. Now does that really sound like it would work, based on how I described Mack? Yeah, exactly - that's so not the kind of person Mack is.
She really does try, though. I was actually surprised by how committed she was to keeping a low profile. Problem is, Corrigan suspects too much and bit by bit her true colors are starting to show. And some members of the pack don't want her around and are using this moment of interference to attack her weaknesses. So will she manage to solve the mystery and avenge her alpha's death, while also protecting her pack by keeping her true identity a secret? That question kept me on the edge until I plowed through Bloodfire in just two sittings.
Concluding Sentiments...
The world is well written, the action keeps coming, and there were only a few eye rolling moments. A definite for fans of Urban Fantasy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, great characters, so many nicknames...
I have read all five books in this series and they are equally fantastic.
Mackenzie, Mack, Red, Kitten, Mack Attack, Dragonlette (see what I mean about the nicknames?) is a fiery red head with fire in her veins and a temper to match. I absolutely loved this character.
The littlest things seem to set Mackenzie's temper off which surprisingly became an endearing character trait often leading to some hilarious and somewhat interesting situations.
No dust settles on this girl. If there is danger Mack Attack is the first one there. Saving the world and making new friends along the way.
Then there is Corrigan. Corrigan is Lord Alpha of the shifters. He's handsome and strong and he's not the type of person you say, "No" too.
When Corrigan meets Mackenzie he is immediately intrigued by the crazy red head but she seems determined to stay away from him. This only fuels his own determination to find out what it is that she is hiding, what more is she capable of and why does she drive him so crazy?
He's not the only one though because everyone else wants a piece of her too, the Mages, the Faeries even the vampires are interested in her and some are prepared to fight for her.
Each book in this series will take you on an amazing journey where you will discover that true friendship will rise above any challengee no matter what realm you live on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood Destiny Bd. 1
Inhaltsangabe:

5.0 out of 5 stars fantaisie romance
A dévorer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great urban fantasy series
I am going to review all 5 books in this series together as I read through them all so fast I am not sure anymore where one began and another ended. I am very glad I come across these after the author had finished the series as I would have found it an excruciating wait! To say that these books were addictive is an understatement. I literally put my life on hold for a week to read them, and what an enjoyable week it was. I discovered Helen Harper about 2 months ago and am slowly working my way through everything of hers and loved all that I have read.
This series of 5 books contains everything I look for, quality writing, interesting plot, great world building and a main character to fall for (with of course an even hotter alpha male thrown in for good measure). Mack was likeable from the very first moment we met her, she took on a huge journey to discover her heritage and go from were pack member to being an outcast, then to one of the most important members of the supernatural society. I loved that we took the scenic route around the UK, from the wilds of Cornwall via Scotland to London, stopping a few places in-between. The supernatural world had everything, including the political interplay between the main groups of Fae, Were and Mages. Some things that stood out were the Were themselves, not just wolves but a whole array of animals. The vampires deserve special mention, these vampires certainly did not sparkle and to be honest were similar to what I think they would end up being if they were indeed real! I loved the friends that mack made along the way, with special mentions to Alex, Solus and Aubrey. This was indeed a roller coaster of a journey and I laughed (there was fantastic humour throughout) and cried. The ending was kind of bittersweet and possibly a little abrupt but still satisfying although I would love a peek into the future sometime. Thank you Helen Harper for a fantastic read.
