- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020When my local Barnes and Noble not only didn't have the book I was looking for but had no catalog entry for it either, I was about to give up, but this seller, very happily, did have it and was able to get me a pristine copy within a short time. Delighted! Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2019An impressive debut , Blood and Sugar by Laura Shepherd- Robinson takes the reader back to a dark time in British history. It is 1781 and at Deptford dock a man's body is discovered hanging from a hook. It is clear that he has been tortured and brutally murdered, and it seems that it could be a warning. When military man Harry Corsham is visited by the sister of an old friend, and learns that he has disappeared it seems clear that the two strands of the story are linked. Sure enough the unfortunate victim is his old friend, and before long Corsham is convinced that the authorities in Deptford know more than they are saying. As a slaving port, his friend's abolitionist views would have made him no friends, but with a little digging Corsham learns that his friend was on the verge of laying bare a horrifying secret that could have been a devastating blow to the slave trade, not just in Deptford but in Britain as a whole. As layer upon layer of conspiracy unfolds, the true depravity of the secret and the lengths that the conspirators will go to keep it hidden makes for gripping reading.
This is not a book for the faint of heart, while the violence is never gratuitous, it is there, and often in very stark, almost graphic terms, and this can make for upsetting reading at times. The book is loosely inspired by real events, and that makes it all the more disturbing, but an important look at a dark period. I also found it really interesting to read about the slave trade from the British perspective, so often it is regarded as an American issue or problem, it is easy to forget that it happened far closer to home too. The book is a dense read, though I mean that in a positive way, the plot twists and turns and there is a wealth of fascinating characters to get to grips with.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021Well researched and provided some excellent insight in to slaving history that readers may not know. History woven into a novel make for a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2021I love books in this time period so that part is the positive. Might have dragged a little but overall, good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2020This was a great book. I love the fact that the author pulled truth in with the fiction and all that happened in the story was definitely plausible. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that finds historical fiction a good read. The characters are well developed and there is not too much filler that you just get board with it. I have not read many historical fictions stories from this time period but I very much look forward to reading the one that she came out with that follows this one or at least some of its characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarquable
La valeur n'attend pas... On peine à croire qu'il s'agit d'un premier roman ! Très documenté et écrit comme au 19e siècle dans une belle langue aussi précise qu'évocatrice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark and troubling mystery set in Deptford with slavery at the heart of it
This was not an easy read, for reasons I'll come on to, but it was a real page-turner, a very dark mystery set in Deptford full of fabulous historical ambiance and at the heart of it a crime with a crime-solver who is himself deeply troubled, part of the Establishment and yet not. It very much reminded me of the Shardlake books - and that's a high complement, I loved them.
Captain Harry Corsham is a war hero who is now (half-heartedly, it has to be said) looking to become an MP. He's made a brilliant marriage to a beautiful woman but it's gone wrong, and as far as he's concerned, it's only their son who is keeping it together. Harry is summoned by the sister of a friend of his, and asked to investigate his murder. From the start this is troubling for him. He and Tad, his friend, were estranged. Tad was an abolitionist - it's the 1780s, slavery is still entrenched in Britain's economy - and what's more, Tad's sexuality at that time, was illegal. But Harry feels guilty about the end he put to their friendship and so he heads off to Deptford to investigate.
The author does a magnificent job of invoking Deptford at the time, and gives us a complex, fascinating and brilliantly-drawn collection of characters to deal with - slaves, freed slaves, people involved in the capture and shipping of slaves, and profiteers as well as the Establishment. What unfolds is a really great murder mystery, but also an unforgettable and at times very, very troubling panorama of the slave trade in Britain and the suffering - oh my goodness, some of that kept me awake at night.
This is a rare (for me, at any rate) book that brilliantly combines history and crime, and has an ending that is (again, rare for me) very satisfying. The first book by this author for me, but definitely not the last. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely compelling.
This is a excellently researched and written novel and I strongly enjoyed it, even considering the grim subject. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real find
Well researched historical fiction with rounded characters. Set in the early 1780s. This novel revolves around the slave trade. It is a great read and in my opinion her second novel is even better. Completely separate books but with some of the same characters. The second deals with ladies of the night. If you like authors such as C J Sansom you will love this.
