Secret Meetings: A Bob Robbins Home Front Mystery Paperback – February 12, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Cornwall, Spring, 1944
A lone traveller arrives at a harbour inn carrying a satchel of weapons, then appears in the grounds of River Lodge, a typical English country house in wartime.
Except with a scandalous family history, the owner’s wife and servants hiding secrets and grievances, a glamourous trans-Atlantic socialite and an uninvited American professor in residence, there is nothing normal about River Lodge.
Then Bob Robbins arrives impersonating Winston Churchill and there is a tragic accident. Or is it daylight murder? And who was the intended victim? Was it caused by the crank stalking Churchill, or a domestic homicide? Could it be related to the nearby preparations for D-Day?
Reverting to his real identity, DS Robbins investigates the crime knowing his own life is in danger. Can cynical old Bob and keen young Laurie Oliver identify a murderer at River Lodge and ensure the outcome of the Normandy landings?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2023Format: KindleDiving into a new Bob Robbins mystery is like “going down the pub” on a Sunday lunchtime on winter’s day – warm, welcoming, crowded with familiar faces and out-of-towners in search of good company and a traditional roast. With gifted author J.G. Harlond as the genial host, the atmosphere quickly transforms into a delicious whodunnit – and we settle into another fabulously entertaining cozy mystery set in the English countryside. This time, Bob is required to play the role of his life – impersonating Winston Churchill during a particularly dark and dangerous time in the Second World War – and he takes to it with zest, accompanied by his trusty sidekick Laurie and a mischievous poodle Rufus making up the team.
And then along comes an unexpected dreadful accident, and we embark on a fast-paced whodunnit.
I love Harlond’s historical fiction novels for the exquisite detail and world-building, and even in her fast-paced, plot-based detective novels she paints with the same brush. 1940s’ Cornwall comes alive under her touch, and along with gorgeous descriptions of the countryside, she populates the war-weary county with a marvellous group of characters, each with their own quirks, accents and high-stakes at risk.
A quick and extremely satisfying read, entertaining and undoubtedly based on authentic and well-researching details. I enjoyed thoroughly, and highly recommend to lovers of Foyles War and Agatha Christie. Rich, flavourful, and definitely a favourite. Please, J.G. Harlond, I want some more!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2023Format: PaperbackAll the hooks of a classic whodunnit plus WW2 authentic history – and based on a stranger-than-fiction true story: Winston Churchill’s decoy double.
The Bob Robbins mysteries always contain a soupçon of dark humour which lift them above the average cozy mystery, which can be bland for my reading taste. English attitudes of the time give plenty of material for that wicked sense of humour to come into play, as when an old fisherman in a bar gives his views on the Duke of Windsor, who has just abdicated. ‘Giving up a palace and his duty to his country for an American with two livin’ husbands.’ The reader knows instantly what this character thinks of Americans and divorce!
The dialogue is a joy, using local and ‘posh’ speech to good effect and creating very different characters, with enough misunderstandings to create entertainment for the reader and confusion for the police.
There is plenty of daily life detail for cozy lovers, from Victoria sponge with tea on Thursdays, to Rufus the mischievous poodle, a double for Churchill’s dog, the perfect accessory for Bob Robbins’ impersonation of the great man – except that he’s a dog, with a mind of his own.
Bluffs, double-bluffs, treason and spying, and of course a murder, provide satisfying puzzles to solve. Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2023Format: KindleNot my first Bob Robbins mystery. Quirky and yet plausible. Was not originally aware of the historical inspiration for this one. Full of entertaining characters, I usually need to watch when I start these, because I can't put them down. Part familiar, part intriguing mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars witty and clever cozy mystery in a class with Agatha Christie
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCornwall in 1944 may appear sleepy and remote, but for Detective Bob Robbins it is a place full of opportunities for crime. This time, however, it seems his talents are required not for his detection skills but for his ability to impersonate the prime minister, Winston Churchill. It’s with reluctance that Bob agrees to go attend an unremarkable country house for a house party, with a rambunctious dog and Laurie, his partner, hovering in the background, on secondment to the war department. Things go awry, accidents occur that may not be accidents, questionable people with possibly shady past inhabit the house and the hint of spies enters the equation. Soon it’s clear the Bob Robbins detection skills will have to be at its finest because it’s not just catching a villain that’s at stake but his own life as well as Laurie’s.
This is a really cleverly written and witty cozy mystery that has plenty of atmosphere and the sort of detail that allows the reader to sink into the story and picture the time period. A wonderful and imaginative weekend read to treat yourself to, especially if you are an Agatha Christie fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and highly enjoyable
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI like policeman Bob Robbins because he's ordinary and has human qualities (no spoilers... he isn't the bravest of heroes,) all he really wants is a quiet life and goes about his investigations in a little bit like a 'Columbo' fashion as he bumbles about. But he has a sharp mind and victims, although they think they can, can't pull the wool over his eyes for long.
In this story I especially enjoyed his doubling as Winston Churchill, it makes you think that this possibly really did happen during the war when Winnie needed to baffle the Germans. The secondary characters were equally as well drawn, all wrapped up in an intriguing plot and so very well written.
This is a standalone - but I would suggest to start at the beginning to get the best reading experience about a most delightful character
