Bombshells: A Brooklyn Hockey Novel Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,047 ratings

He’s one puck-up away from being sent back to the minors…

After a lackluster season full of party-boy mishaps and questionable decisions, Anton Bayer knows he needs to focus on one thing only: hockey. No women. No scandals. No distractions.

Then Sylvie Hansen glides into his life.

The stunning new goalie for the Brooklyn Bombshells women's team is fierce, focused, and frustratingly off-limits. Not only is she a teammate's "little sister," but she's also nursing a broken heart.

When a spark ignites between them, Anton and Sylvie know they're playing with fire. Between secret rendezvous, steamy locker room glances, and some very inconvenient feelings, they're on thin ice. And if anyone finds out? There will be bombshells...

In this deliciously funny hockey romance, the only thing harder than earning a spot on the roster is keeping your hands to yourself.

Contains: a defenseman with dreamy blue eyes, a female goalie with bad ideas, a major battle of the sexes and a swimming pool scene...

Bombshells Wins a Standing Ovation!

Bombshells Wins a Standing Ovation!
Bombshells is hockey romance at its finest. It has everything you want in a sports romance, and nobody writes hockey romance the way Sarina Bowen does. It’s her super power. And with the introduction of Bombshells, Brooklyn’s women’s pro hockey team, she took her game to another level. Bombshells is simply unputdownable. ‘I really hadn’t anticipated that my brain could be stolen by the goalie on day one.’ Bombshells is Anton Bayer’s story. He’s a charming, fun-loving guy who’s determined to make some changes in his life to focus on his hockey career. His only goal is to prove to his coach, and himself, that he can fulfill his potential. But he wasn’t counting on the Bombshells’ goalie to detonate his plan. ‘No other man has ever made me feel this way—like I’d walk through fire for just one more kiss.’ Sylvie’s dream of playing hockey professionally came true out of the blue. She packed her things and moved to Brooklyn from Toronto with little time to make any plans. But living in Brooklyn would give her the chance to finally be with the guy she had always thought was “the one”, Bryce Campeau, Anton’s friend and teammate. Except things didn’t go the way she expected. There’s a lot to love about Bombshells. The writing is fantastic—as always, the story flows and progresses perfectly, and the characters are lovable, three dimensional and relatable. Both Anton and Sylvie are the kind of people you want to be friends with. All the Bruisers are. There is a small town vibe in the way the Bruisers are like a close-knit family. You also get to meet a few of the Bombshells players to make things interesting for the future. The potential is endless and really exciting. I really loved the way the story evolves. It works perfectly as a standalone, and the progression is exactly right. The way Anton and Sylvie’s friendship grows and becomes something else is delicious. Their banter, the tension, the emotional turmoil, the longing... it is extremely well done and so addictive. There is very little angst but there are emotional aspects that give the story, and the characters, depth and intensity. And there is nothing to worry if you don’t like love triangles because this one is definitely not that kind of triangle. It’s actually extremely well done and very original in my opinion. ‘In my whole life I’ve never gotten turned on by somebody’s hockey skills. But I guess there’s a first time for everything.’ Bombshells is intensely hockey-y. I know nothing about hockey, but the way Sarina Bowen describes it brings it to life in my mind. The action on the ice gives the story an edge that complements the action off the ice. It’s perfectly balanced. Then there’s the whole women’s sports aspect that is discussed in the book, and it makes the point of how insanely difficult it is for women to be professional athletes in a very organic way. I loved seeing a woman shine in this book as an athlete, specially as a hockey player. It’s simply outstanding.

What I love most about this book is the lack of drama. The first half of the Bruisers Hockey series, except for Silas’ book, have unnecessary breakup drama. I have grown so sick of romance novels that have the couples breaking up after one argument or misunderstanding. Because that’s nearly every romance book. But it’s getting more popular it seems to have more communication and less melt downs and I am glad Bowen went that route with this book. Bryce was a mild obstacle and the quick and easy shut down to his reaction to finding out about Anton and Sylvie was hilarious and wonderful. I was honestly expecting for him to have his freakout in the middle of the book, causing a huge scene that ends up in a gossip blog, which makes Anton embarrassed for failing to uphold his new self imposed standard which would of course makes him break up with Sylvie and then there’s the dramatic get-back-together after several chapters of mutual pining. And I am SO GLAD that’s not what happened.

Just a simple, sweet love story between Anton (Baby) Bayer and Sylvie Hanson - both hockey players in Brooklyn.

Sylvie gets a chance to play professional hockey on a new team in Brooklyn. She's hoping to reconnect with Bryce Campeau (a player for the Bruisers). Bryce spent a lot of time in Sylvie's home as an older teen hockey player after his mother passed away, and got really close to the family. Sylvie thinks her mother (who passed away in the last year) thought Sylvie would end up with Bryce - but Bryce is NOT ready. He's still focused on improving his hockey game, but he's also very protective of Sylvie.

Anton sees Sylvie at the beginning of the season and is immediately attracted to her. But he's trying to clean up his act after spending the end of the last season in the minors. He was partying a little too much and his game suffered as a result. So he's committed to changing his ways this year. Bringing a woman into his life isn't really what he has in mind - especially as he and Sylvie become friends and he learns about her complicated relationship with his friend and teammate.

Sylvie had to focus on getting her game back too. She's a little nervous about being 2nd goalie for the Bombshells. And she's also tired of waiting for Bryce to wake up, and she's starting to realize that what she's really feeling is the remnants of a childhood crush. And then there's Anton - who enjoys spending time with her but doesn't want to commit because of the complications around dating his teammates non-ex, plus he really doesn't want to lose his focus on hockey. As it turns out, he's a lot better at being a boyfriend than he ever thought he could be.

He's also a pretty good swim instructor, which was a sweet little side story with a bunch of Brooklyn teens.

I loved the hairpins Sylvie kept finding - signs that her mother is still nearby. For me and my mother, it was dimes. I love signs like this and I loved seeing this woven into the story.

    Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Open Bombshells, the newest book in the Brooklyn Bruisers series, and you find immediately that it is quintessential Sarina Bowen. Like her other Bruiser stories, you find a very masculine hockey player in the form of Anton Bayer, cousin to Eric Bayer from Bowen’s Moonlighter, book 1 of her The Company series. Where “Baby Bayer” deviates, though, is in his characterization. Let me explain. One of the qualities of a Sarina Bowen romance, what makes her quintessential Sarina Bowen along with the books in her World of True North series written by other authors, is this insistence on bringing “more” to the genre of romance. Some authors do this, and honestly, it feels preachy. We read romance to escape, to find relationships that end in happily-ever-afters. When an author uses the genre and becomes emphatic on using storyline to speak to social injustices, if it isn’t done well, it undermines the essence of the genre. Sarina Bowen’s brand of romance doesn’t do that. She doesn’t undermine the story of her hero with the story of her heroine, for example, in Bombshells. You’re probably wondering what I mean by that.

In Bombshells, we are not only treated to Anton Bayer; Bowen introduces us to her women’s hockey team, the Bombshells. Her heroine, Sylvie, a woman recruited from Canada to become the backup goalie for Rebecca’s newly created women’s hockey team. Since there is a shift away from the Bruisers (albeit they still feature heavily into this story with its inclusion of Bayer) to the Bombshells, Bowen finds space for a discussion about issues in parity between men and women’s sports. Interestingly, this message takes up a small portion of her story, while also challenging her reader with considering the issues between men’s and women’s sport. Again, she doesn’t “hit her readers over the head” with this message; it is carefully woven through the story, never overwhelming it. Instead, it sits within your consciousness as Bayer and Sylvie fall in love. Additionally, Bowen crafts Bayer with everything we love about her masculine hockey players, but she also creates him with a kindness and compassion that doesn’t detract from his maleness. Instead, he easily complements Sylvia. There are other players, such as Drake, who, with this message about the disparity between men’s and women’s sports, might undermine the message or even make it seem preachy. Instead, Bayer and Sylvie’s coupling allows that theme the space it needs to challenge the thinking of Bowen’s readers.

This theme is further elaborated on through the construction of Sylvie’s character. We find out from the beginning that Sylvie’s teenhood sweetheart, Bryce Campeau, plays for the Bruisers (he’s actually a friend to Bayer). Hoping to call on a promise that Bryce made for their future, Sylvie surprises Bryce and realizes quickly that he has no intention of committing to his promise. Instead, he insinuates himself into Sylvie’s life as an overbearing protector, providing another layer to the debate about women’s agency. Again, this is done with a finesse that is a Sarina Bowen feature that doesn’t overwhelm the reader but provides a challenge instead.

Finally, sitting with a Sarina Bowen book such as Bombshells brings with it an ease in its articulation. Once this book began, I couldn’t and did not want to put it down. From the bittersweet storyline of Sylvie’s mother to the ease of friendship and then more between Bayer and Sylvie to the camaraderie of the Bombshells and their male counterparts, the Brooklyn Bruisers, you find a combination of nostalgia (the former Bruisers’ characters) and the promise of more stories from the Bombshells (I am personally ready for a story between Drake and Charli). Sarina Bowen’s Bombshells is everything you love from the world of the Brooklyn Bruisers with so many cameos of past characters that it’s impossible to count. And honestly, you just don’t care to. Instead, this is a book where you can sit back and get lost in a story about two people with insta-chemistry, a foundation of friendship, and the promise of the best of forevers in hockeyland.

A solid hockey romance. Well written. Great characters. Entertaining plot. A few laugh out loud moments. I don’t think it is so extraordinary or thought provoking that I would read it again, but I definitely enjoyed it.

    Buona lettura

I did not expect this book to be this good, but - HOLY CRAP! If this wasn’t a fun read!

„Bombshells“ is a sweet, slow-burn sports romance, with an awesome, strong hockey goalie named Sylvie, a hot, sometimes cheesy hockey defenseman called Anton and his teammate Bryce, who Sylvie has *history* with (yes, it’s a LOVE TRIANGLE!)

I loved Sylvie’s character, but what struck me most of all was that there’s no „evil“ one in the love triangle (like often is in these books), and that kept me glued to the story and guessing!

If you love sports romance, particularly hockey, I definitely recommend picking up this book!

As usual I couldn’t wait to read this new book in the “Brooklyn Bruisers” series by Sarina Bowen which in one of my favorites series from this author and I’m not disappointed at all! I loved “Bombshells”. In this new book we meet Anton Bayer and Sylvie Hansen. Anton is a Brooklyn Bruisers players who had appeared in previous “Brooklyn Bruisers” books as well as in “Moonlighter”, the first book in “The Company” series. In those books Anton appeared as a very funny guy and a little bit immature but in “Bombshells” I found him more mature but still very funny. As for Sylvie, she is a player in the new Brooklyn’s team: the Bombshells, a women professional hockey team.
After a difficult year Anton is decided to not repeat his mistakes. Therefore he has three rules this season : no booze, no women, no scandals. He wants to show what he is really capable of on the ice and doesn’t want to be seen as a playboy anymore. Only, he hadn’t planned to meet Sylvie on his first day back at the rink… She is a fiery woman and they become fast friends. Though Anton want more than friendship but it’s not that simple between his new rules, their packed schedules and the fact that Sylvie has history with one of Anton teammates…
I really like the relationship between those two. They are great characters and there is a real connection between them. I also found their personal stories very interesting and touching. They both have a lot of humor and fiery personalities. They are never boring and I loved seeing their relationship reaching new levels even if it was far from being easy. It makes for a lot of fun and drama, something I like a lot while reading a book.
Another point I loved in this book was the fact that there is a women hockey team. It’s not very common in romance. It’s original but also allowed to point out about inequality in sport between men and women. I think it’s very interesting and very important to talk about it. Besides it looks like we’ll read more about it in the books to come in this series since the Bombshells are going to make new appearances and I can’t wait about it!
The last point I really liked in this book was to see what happened to the characters from the previous book but also to learn more about new ones. It makes me want to read the next book even more! And there is a surprise with the apparition of a character from the ‘Ivy Years’ series, which I loved.
If you like hockey and romance I really recommend this book, (and all Sarina Bowen’s book for the matter).

5.0 out of 5 stars Love triangle with a nice twist of fate
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2021
Sylvie Hansen grew up around ice hockey as her father was a trainer. Bryce Campeau had spent a while living with Sylvie and her family while he was training, and she had developed a massive crush on him. However he was very focused on his game and didn't think of Sylvie that way, he behaved more like an over protective older brother. She didn't see much of him once he moved to Brooklyn to play for the Bruisers.

When the opportunity arose for Sylvie to play for the newly formed Brooklyn Bombshells she though this might be a great opportunity to reconnect with Bryce. However she doesn't get the welcome she thought she would. Anton Bayer, Bryce's teammate on the other hand, cannot take his eyes off Sylvie!

Anton must get his act together this season and clean up his reputation. He doesn't need a distraction like Sylvie in his life. He decides the best way to keep things on an even keel that he will be Sylvie's friend.

A very interesting love triangle which is even more complicated than it first appears. A very good story with a few twists, as well as a bit of a catch up on some of the Bruisers characters that we've grown to love with a lovely happy ever after, though I've been left wanting more. Always the sign of a good book.
