- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2024This is a very interesting novel that entertains you as it informs you about global warming. The story centers around Maven, a brilliant young lady just about to graduate from high school whose main concern in life is winning a scholarship to college. That changes when she meets HOOT, a cybernetic organism left over from an ancient advanced civilization that destroyed itself with climate change. HOOT asks Maven to help it prevent the same thing from happening to our current civilization, setting her on a new course through life. This is the first of a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022Collette did a great job with character development and story telling in this series that touches on our current environmental issues. I hope this inspires the readers to take action. I would highly recommend this book to any science fiction buff and especially teens that may be contemplating their future roles in this world. Can't wait to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024I was recommended to read this book. It was well written and well thought out. My only hang up was the slow start. It had a good plot, the take off was just a little slow. Still a very enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024The author’s powerful grasp on relationships and the impact those relationships have on our journey was fantastic to see come to life on the page. Readers are immediately enthralled with protagonist Maven and her connections with the supporting cast. The relatability of the tension between her and her brother and the camaraderie between her and her friends instantly draws the reader into the narrative.
The theme of climate change and the impact we as a civilization have on the climate was a powerful message to embody throughout this book. The use of journal entries to give a first-person perspective on the narrative was inspired, as it gave more insight into Maven as a protagonist. The concept of hidden histories and forgotten civilizations was engaging and left readers eager for more from this YA sci-fi novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024I love the premise of this book. It's nice to read about positive ideas like this in regards to climate change. The characters are very relatable, and it's easy to get swept up in their world. The cool tech ideas are woven into the story in a seamless way that propels the story wonderfully. The kinds of ideas discussed in this book should be a part of our school system so we can help the younger generations get interested in ideas related to climate change and how we can find technological solutions through innovation. After all, as the characters stated in the story, time is running out. Every year is the hottest one on record. That should worry everyone. But for some reason, it doesn't. At least, not yet.
I found myself wishing I had attended Maven's school as a kid. What an interesting place! It would be fun to see these competitions in real life. Hopefully someone will read this and develop some of the tech presented here, especially the owl! And of course the science competitions!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2022The central theme of trying to arrest Global Warming will attract many to this book. Personally, the title caught my eye. When I was a youth, I used to hike at Bon Echo in the summer. Always remained a special place to me and suddenly, BAM here's a book titled Bon Echo...
The world-building here is incredible. The author has taken the necessary steps to set the groundwork for a skyscraper of a book series. As you read this book you will get to know Maven and her oft annoying bro. You will get to know their groups of close friends. You will have a hoot meeting Hoot, too.
The creative thought that went into the storyline is impressive. Centered on the need to do something to stop the Climate Crisis, this book nails that issue. Such a well-defined and clearly strident approach, it is lovely to read. I would surmise even those not accepting the fact of Global Warming will enjoy this book.
If you are a reader who is concerned about the future of the planet then read this book. Fans of science-based fiction will love this book. I personally can't wait for book two. Once you read the first book you will be hooked.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022Bon Echo and the Competition is staggering in scope, spanning millennia in its quest to save the earth from climate disaster, and packed with mind-boggling scientific aspects that permeate the novel.
Imagine a feathered character who is "Hybrid Owl Organic Technology", who has mentored, and has been a companion to, genetically-related women over a span of thousands of years, each woman in fact bearing modified DNA in an aspect that's intended to help them work to save the earth! Imagine a group of present-day older teens, all of them passionate about science (in terms of their future careers), all of them determined to work to save the earth. Factor in the primary teens' grandmother, and their father, often supportive but sometimes "of a different opinion" regarding how things should be done. Further, the teens' mother died in a tragic scientific accident when the kids were young. Her death is shrouded in mystery....with Hoot, the "Hybrid Owl Organic Technology", knowing more about the disaster than any of the humans, but also required to adhere to strict regulations regarding technological secrets....
This is a highly creative and original work of fiction, with incredible depth of thought that obviously went into its conception and development. For me, however, a heavy reliance on expositional dialogue slowed the pace in many instances - when the author's nicely-crafted narrative style could have done a far more efficient job of truly welcoming the reader into the story. Likewise, I think the secondary teen characters could have been more strongly developed as individuals, rather than blurring together as often happened. A stronger editorial hand could make this into a truly stunning, stand-out book with its crucial wake-up call for people to band together to save our planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I will admit I’m not a science buff so it took me a little to get into this book. It was the photo of the owl that drew me to this book. I will say I enjoyed it and found it well done with interesting characters. I am a Senior and have passed it on to others that need to enjoy a simpler and entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for adults and kids
I was persuaded, by a friend, to read this book. I resisted it because I thought it was aimed at teens and I had no interest in a high-school tech competition.
Once I was through the opening pages about the competiton, and realized the whole book was about the teenage heroine's re-reading of her diary recounting the summer's adventures, I was hooked.
The book is a mix of of mystery, AI, technology/science, and Si-fi, with a little bit of magic thrown in.
It is an excellent way to get all (not just girls) young people interested in global warming and nature conservation in a way that gives a workable blueprint for hope and possibility.
There is a strong emphasis on working to get university scholarships and pursuing whatever areas of learning that ignite your passion.
