Charming Caroline: A Pride and Prejudice Christmas Charms Book Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

Christmas at Pemberley

Lady Caroline Harpwell thought she had everything she wanted. Married to a baronet, her title put her above everyone who had ever denied her what she deserved. But instead of happiness, she found herself in a gilded cage.
Widowed after only two years of marriage, Caroline is forced from her home by her husband’s heirs: distant cousins from one of the former colonies, Virginia. Unwilling to live in a home less opulent than she deserves, she accepts an invitation to spend the holiday season with her brother and sister-in-law at Pemberley.
Forced to participate in silly traditions, Caroline determines to suffer through the holidays and then escape back to London. The demonstrations of marital felicity are simply too much to bear.
An acquaintance from her childhood joins the celebrations, discomposing Caroline and making her question every belief she has ever held. With the help of those around her, Caroline just might learn that money can’t buy happiness, and that love is more precious than jewels.
This book is the fourth installment in the Christmas Charms Novella series. It is best read after the other three.

MJ Stratton grew up in a small town in rural Utah, moving back in 2021 after being away for ten years. Her love of Jane Austen was born at a young age when she read Pride and Prejudice for the first time. Her first ever exposure to JAFF was watching Lost in Austen as a teen. MJ recently left her teaching job to be at home with her four children, and hopefully pursue her passion for writing more fully. After feeding her love of books by editing and beta reading for years, she hopes to commit more fully to penning her own stories. MJ loves food, growing things, and the quiet of the countryside. You can find MJ on Facebook and Amazon.

This is a delightful conclusion to the Christmas Charms series and takes place a few years after the events of the other books in the Charms series. Caroline Bingley married Baronet Harpwell but was widowed after two years. As the new Baronet is coming to take up his inheritance, she must find a new place to live. She visits the Bingleys and Darcy’s for Christmas and meets up with her first love — Sebastian Moore. They had parted badly several years before and both came away from it feeling very hurt and damaged by the experience, neither of which ever overcame it.

I always like finding JAFF that presents Caroline in a more gentle light. It’s too easy to make her an over-the-top villain so when I learned that MJ Stratton would write a book about Caroline, knowing how well Stratton has dealt with other side characters before, I was quite excited to see this book and preordered it the moment I could. It does not disappoint.

First of all, Stratton gives us more of a look into Caroline as a child and a teenager. You see glimpses of her enjoying life and especially enjoying playing in the snow. In doing so, you see more of a basis for her extreme criticisms of Elizabeth in canon. She sees a gentlewoman behaving in a way she used to and not only getting away with it but also gaining the social status in the husband she herself had been so desperate to obtain.

Second, I liked seeing Sebastian and his status as a tradesman and new landowner. While he is an honorable man like Darcy, his personality is more impulsive and a bit more volatile. He is less reserved and controlled. Caroline’s determined search to gain Darcy or a peer or any man who was the opposite of Sebastian was an effort to get over the pain she still felt from their parting.

Watching the two of them learn to move away from the hurt of the past and accept the other is sweet. But in particular, it is enjoyable to see Caroline finally accept parts of herself that she had tried to deny, which helps her become more comfortable with herself and those around her.

This was a good conclusion to the series. I very much enjoyed it.

I liked the first part of the book where Carolyn was learning about herself and making small changes. Then abruptly she is totally rehabilitated into a kind person. The part about her past love is so totally predictable, it doesn't offer any surprises. The book could have been more, but it was adequate.

It's always fun to get a Caroline who is more than just a nasty harpy. I truly enjoyed her love story.

Another satisfying tale of redemption that reflects that inate desire we harbor for all those we love and surround us.

An understandable perspective of Caroline's behavior in canon. Her romance with Sebastian was sweet and entirely believable. I loved seeing this side of Caroline.

An explanation about why Caroline spurned love and strove for status. Although a short novel, it showed Caroline's growth, vulnerability and love of family. She's not my favourite JA character, but I liked this one. Well done MJ!
