Book of Shadows (SpellSight 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

Just when he thought things couldn’t get worse…

Necromancer Job Jacobs has serious problems.

A vengeful cat goddess on the prowl. A strangely sentient undead coworker up to no good. An unbreakable blood pact he
really wishes he hadn’t signed, and the derision of his new girlfriend Laura’s nearest and dearest.

As if that wasn’t enough, an evil entity arrives in Nightridge and sets its sights on destroying Laura. How can Job possibly fight such an all-powerful enemy—an enemy that looks like the person he loves most in the world?

Sadly, not even Hades himself has the answers, but if Job doesn’t figure it out soon, he’ll lose Laura and risk everything important to him—including his soul.

J.H. Moncrieff's City of Ghosts won the 2018 Kindle Book Review Award for best Horror/Suspense.

Reviewers have described her work as early Gillian Flynn with a little Ray Bradbury and Stephen King thrown in for good measure.

She won Harlequin's search for “the next Gillian Flynn” in 2016. Her first published novella, The Bear Who Wouldn’t Leave, was featured in Samhain’s Childhood Fears collection and stayed on its horror bestsellers list for over a year.

When not writing, she loves exploring the world's most haunted places, advocating for animal rights, and summoning her inner ninja in muay thai class.

    Actual rating 4.25.

This sequel to the Spellsight series was hard to read, but not in a bad way. It was tough to see the struggles the main character was going through. Characters in this spin-off series, and the original Ghost Writers series, have faced many obstacles of varying natures, but this is the first time it felt like the world itself was against the MC.

Laura is such a nice lady, she doesn’t deserve all this negativity, but I understand the author needs to tell a story. Despite what the character goes through, J.H. does make a point to keep the reader hopeful so it isn’t all doom and gloom, but that ending… I just can’t. I need to know what happens.

I know hate is a strong word, but I HATE cliffhangers! The worst part about it is that I totally get why the book ends the way it does. It’s the right ending for this book knowing there is more to the story, but I can still be a little mad about it. I just want to know that everything is going to work out and Laura and all her friends will have a happy ending, but I know that a happy ending isn’t a guarantee that I’ll get everything I want as a reader.

I love that this author delights me and makes me so mad all at the same time. I love these characters and can’t wait for the next book. Seriously, I put off reading this book due to other commitments, but when the next one comes out, everything is getting put to the side.

Highly recommended to fans of J.H. Moncrieff, dark fantasy, paranormal and mythology-based fiction, magic, and worlds with diverse characters including a strong female lead.

BOOK OF SHADOWS is the second book in the SpellSight series by J.H. Moncrieff. This book should be read after book one, BOOK OF THE DEAD, in order to fully appreciate the cast of characters and their backgrounds.

Combining Witches, Necromancers, and gods/deities from all different beliefs, this book had just about everything. Laura is being tormented by ... something that has the ability to shift into a semblance of her form--only this "Not-Laura" is determined to destroy everything Laura holds dear. Things are also heating up for Job, her necromancer boyfriend, and his endeavors. As more gods and deities become involved in the situation, things get increasingly more complex.

I loved the plot, the dynamics between most of the characters (there's one I particularly dislike), and the insight into the different beliefs of each. The only issue I had in this novel was trying to keep straight which god/goddess were from which mythology. I consider myself well versed in most, so this isn't something that would necessarily bother others. Personally, I "need" to know exactly which branch I'm reading about before I can move on to the next part, so this slowed things down for me a bit when multiple mythologies collided. However, the fact that the book DID include this variety of beliefs was impressive enough on its own, showing that no ONE belief was more "important" than another.

Appearances from Kate and Jacks of the GhostHunters series are always highlights for me, and they didn't disappoint here.

Recommended, to be read after Book one.

"Book of Shadows" is the second book in J.H. Moncrieff's "SpellSight" series revolving around Laura Device and her Coven.

The book centered around trying to find out who or what was pretending to be Laura and disrupting her life to such a great extent. Using the help of God's that she had befriended, Laura had quite the task ahead of her to find out who/what had stolen the one thing she held most dear to her as a witch, and how to stop them.

I'm new to being a fan of J.H., but I really do enjoy her style of writing and continue reading her books as they come out
