4.2 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Death truly had come to the village...

Nothing exciting ever happens in the border towns of Scotland, and the village of Newcastleton, with a population in the hundreds, is no exception to the rule. That is until kids start going missing and turning up dead, and violently mutilated, in the surrounding forests.

A group of teens will be forced to put down their NES controllers, walk away from their VHS collections, and try to figure out what has descended upon their quaint, little village.

Born of Bloodshed from A.D Jones, author of Sacrificial Waters, will transport you to 1990 Scotland for this terror-filled, coming of age story which promises nostalgia, stomach-churning violence, and a group of teens that you will fall in love with. Perhaps don't get too attached!

Born of Bloodshed is a nostalgia filled creature horror with the perfect blend of humor and horror! The characters were lovable, the monsters were horrific the setting was perfect. I had a blast reading this one it even got me with a couple of jump scares! (I'm impressed) My only complaint is that I wish it was a little longer! There was definitely more fun to be had here.

Bonus points to the author for writing a horror story character, that not only sees and calls out the stupidity of some of the plans/actions of the group, but also has them share realistic anxieties about the situation they find themselves in. "Did he even have it in him to stab someone? Even if it was a monster?"

This book wasn't only delightful to read, it was gorgeous to look at. It would be doing this book a disservice to neglect to mention the beautiful cover and the fun chapter art. Not sure what's that called, but It's the creepy little cherry on top of this delicious little nightmare of a novella.

Well, I have two take aways from reading this.
    1. I can officially say I've read a horror story about goblins. I didn't know I needed to check this off the list, but I'm glad I did.
and 2. A.D. Jones packed a lot of fun into this story.

The characters ooze flavor in a nineties setting that made me smile a few times. The mention of video games I loved as a kid always lures me in and Jones suckered me in early, well before the carnage began. Well done.

In this classic 'kids going places they shouldn't be doing things they shouldn't do' story, it will teach you to question the folk lore you've heard, and to fear the absurd.

Bord of Bloodshed is outlandish, and a bloody good time as the writing almost feels like a playful wink from the author as it all unfolds.

I enjoyed this one a lot! I don't read a lot of horror, but when I do, I always hope to stumble over something like this. It was the perfect read for a rainy day, somewhat cozy despite the gore, and I recommend a soft blanket and some nice candles while reading it, because it really was the perfect October read.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved everything about this novella. At just 90ish pages Born of Bloodshed may seem like bite-size horror but don’t mistake it for the fun-size candy bars you will consume by the bag while reading this, this spooky season because this book is jam packed with nostalgia, adventure, and gore.

What wasn’t there to fan out about in this story? Set in 1990 it follows a group of kids on the verge of summer break, hanging out, playing TMNT on the NES in the basement of their unofficial group headquarters I guess you could call it. When one of their friends ends up murdered in the woods and other teens end up meeting the same gruesome fate the teens (like in any good teen adventure movie) take it upon themselves to investigate. What could possibly go wrong?

While reading this, I heard the pop synth 80s 90s movie soundtracks in my head from such classic movies as The Goonies, Stand by Me, The Lost Boys. At one point I had a deep nostalgic urge to rewatch Gremlins. If you want a fast-paced, short read to really get you in the spooky season spirit then pick this one up today.

Thank you Andy & Book Sirens for the Advanced Reader Copy.

I really enjoyed this thrilling horror novella with some 80s/90s nostalgic elements mixed in. To me, it had vibes reminiscent of Stand by Me intertwined with Leprechaun. The novella is well-written, although I found myself hungering for more folklore surrounding the malevolent creature.
Overall, it was entertaining, delivering the expected horror elements for which this author is known. I also loved the creepy chapter headers - a very nice touch! It was the perfect way to kick off the spooky season!

In the village of Newcastleton, a group of fourteen-year-olds are shaken when they discover their friend's brutal murder in the forest. Determined to uncover the truth, they embark on their own investigation by retracing Billy’s final steps. However, their search for justice quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival as they uncover an evil beyond their wildest imagination…

I devoured this novella in a single sitting, unable to tear myself away from this awesome story! The blend of relatable characters, nostalgic 90s undertones, and a skillfully woven mystery set against an eerie and gloomy backdrop completely captivated me. But also, the illustration of a menacing gnome at the beginning of each chapter hinted I was in for a treat - and I was NOT disappointed! Without giving away any spoilers, the author incorporates a creature from English folklore mythology that I was completely obsessed with. They’re ruthless and vicious little creatures that are merciless, with graphic portrayals of bloodshed and carnage! I was so here for it!! This is my favorite type of creature horror.

This is the perfect novella to kick off the spooky season with as it blends a murder mystery, creepy creatures and kids uniting against evil, with plenty of intense violence and gore!

Set in 1990 Scotland, this nostalgic little violent novella will delight any fan of 80s and 90s horror.

Lachlan and his group of friends are shocked when they find out that the brutal murder in town is one of their best friends. Determined to discover who is killing the kids, the group of friends embark on an adventure that quickly turns to violence.

This coming-of-age, kids-on-a-bike novella is phenomenal. The story is really fun, leading the reader to crave the lore that exists in Newcastleton.

The characters are badass. Like with most kid-on-a-bike stories, you really cheer for the kids to be successful. Born of Bloodshed is no exception to that. I wanted the kids to win so bad that I read this entire thing in one sitting. It's that good.

I absolutely loved this read! I haven’t read a book like this for quite some time and it felt so refreshing! I ate this up in one sitting as you just cannot put this one down. Definitely my favourite read of October!

Action-packed, brutal, violent and horrifying are just a few words to describe this read. Jones clutches your attention from the start and doesn’t let you go until way after you’ve finished reading.

I loved the suspense and the fact that the cast of characters were foul-mouthed teenagers. I had major IT and Stranger Things vibes from them. Stupid decisions were of course made, but I really think the group handled the situation as well as they could. I can’t believe how real Jones made this read feel through all the vivid descriptions.

I loved the folklore, coming of age vibes and of course all that blood and gore! The terrifyingly tiny terrors sure had me on tenterhooks turning the pages. I loved these vibes and how the plot was so unexpected.

I also have to talk about the woodland scene which was beyond petrifying. I loved how this book culminated here and so aggressively too!

Laced with the perfect trio of horror, nostalgia and humour, this is one book that I will sure be thinking about for some time - especially with THAT brilliant ending! 😱

I NEED this to be made into a film like ASAP!

You all need to run and grab a copy of this novella now! 🤩

4.0 out of 5 stars A short and shocking read, mixing gore, nostalgia and folklore to make a gripping story.

When I started reading Born of Bloodshed, I was lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that I knew what I was in for it to then completely surprise me!

The story started off fairly sedately, ramping to a violent and bloody ending that was both shocking and gripping.

Lachlan and his friends were great to read. With their unwavering loyalty to each had me rooting for them all the way through. They were fairly realistic, with their funny banter and questionable decisions using their emotions rather than logic.

One of my favourite aspects of the story was the use of Scottish folklore. I won't go into too much detail over the creature that was in the story, which was something I'd heard of but not actually seen in a story before.

I also loved the nineties nostalgia feel to the book. The author really got the feel of the early nineties across without it being too in your face or over explained.

Born of Bloodshed is a short and shocking read, mixing gore, nostalgia and folklore to make a gripping story.

A good, short, blood soaked read. It's well written and enjoyable with plenty of questions. Unfortunately they don't get answered, but in keeping the book short, that's fine. My inquisitive brain was wanting to know more though- why? How?

Would definitely recommend giving it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect horror novella

In the sleepy little village of Newcastleton on the Scottish border, nothing exciting ever seems to happen. Lachlan, Billy, Rory and Jack spend their days visiting the local video shop, playing the TMNT game on their NES & moping around in Lachlan’s basement. When children start to disappear and turn up brutally murdered, the teens try to figure out what the hell is happening.

Born of Bloodshed is the perfect mix of 90’s nostalgia (oh the memories of trying not to get those turtles killed - childhood trauma unlocked), suspense, horror and brutality. Set in a sleepy village surrounded by dense forest, Andy creates the ideal atmosphere for tension and general creepiness. He had me sold on the Scottish folklore angle but I wasn’t prepared for the sinister creatures that he bases the novella’s plot around.

Plenty of jump scares throughout, the viciousness of the attacks and murders and the detail Andy gives will make your skin crawl and your stomach churn. What I love about this story is the way the teens take matters into their own hands and the banter between them and Lachlan’s older sister Rahne & their friend Thea is spot on - awkward teenagers always make great characters.

Born of Bloodshed is out now. At 90 pages long, it’s the perfect mix of supernatural and horror to get you ready for spooky season. Just remember to not look out a window in the dark and on a personal note, I may never walk in the woods in the darker evenings again thanks to Andy and his band of creepy as hell little monsters. And that ending… noooooo!
