4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 188 ratings

From the depths of tragedy rises a woman torn between a forgotten past, a dangerous present, and a love worth fighting for.
Magda Asparov travels from Ukraine, oblivious to the danger she is sailing into when she boards the Titanic to sail to a new and rich life. With an arranged marriage to Matthew Turner, a corrupt wealthy American businessman, waiting for her in America, and a manipulative independent spirit, Magda knew what her destiny would be.
But when the Titanic goes down, Magda survives and awakens with no memory of who she is, where she's from, or where she was going.
Rescued by Captain Richard Blackmore of The Lady Jane, the ship's steward names her Maggie. Maggie learns to navigate the unfamiliar waters of her new life, but must confront the secrets of her past while falling in love with Richard Blackmore.

Believing Magda survived the Titanic sinking, Turner has set his vengeful henchman, William Harker, the task of finding Magda. Harker relentlessly pursues Magda and, as the search intensifies, Blackmore finds himself in the crosshairs of danger.

With suspense and psychological thrills, The Brittle Sea by Tom Kane is book one in an exciting historical drama trilogy.

From the Author

Without doubt, writing The Brittle Sea was a monumental underestimation. I intended writing a one-off historical drama of no more than seventy thousand words. It became a trilogy of over a quarter of a million words.
But the most surreal part about writing
The Brittle Sea was that it took me several years, starting in 2017, then suddenly it was all over and finished.
By Jan 2020 I was less than a quarter of the way through the first draft. Then, on 11th January I took ill with what the Cypriot government called a small outbreak of Swine Flu. To this day I am convinced it was Covid-19. I fully recovered after two weeks, but even so was weak and lacked a desire to eat or drink, as well as losing my sense of smell and taste. I fully expected not to be able to write for quite a while.
Then came the Pandemic.
Suddenly we were overwhelmed and in lock-down. It was a trying time, a frightening time. But what it did for my writing was a miracle. By the end of the first lockdown,
The Brittle Sea was completed. Therefore, I dedicated the book to all the front-line workers the world over.
Once Book One was completed I was straight onto the next two books and within months both were completed and ready to go.
There is only one way to describe my writing experience with
The Brittle Sea, The Brittle Land and The Brittle Sky - it was a rollercoaster ride.

Tom Kane is a seasoned writer whose literary journey began at the age of eight with his first short story, Planet A for Acid. Armed with a pencil and notepad, he embarked on a lifelong passion for storytelling. Transitioning to a typewriter in his thirties, he penned tales whenever time allowed. Currently, Kane's focus now lies on Walking Away from Midnight, his latest historical fiction endeavour poised to launch a promising series. Additionally, he is on the brink of completing The Ragged Edge of Time, a captivating science fiction novel slated for release in the autumn of 2024.

I started reading this book because of the ties to the Titanic. But that is only a small part of the tale. The story travels to several parts of the world as one man's life is full of adventures, both large and small. I really enjoyed reading this book, even though it could use a good editing in the punctuation department. I plan to continue on with book two and rare this first book 5 stars.

This beautiful woman suffers from amnesia from a head injury from the iceberg the leads to a split personality. She falls in love with Richard and is kidnapped while Richard is on a 3 month voyage. There are many twist in this plot a Richard tries to find her and then the climax of the story is an absolute surprise. I award this novel 4 Stars

First if you hate cliffhangers then skip this. All in all a good story. But some grammatical errors that are irritating. A bit slow and tangential at times. But really.. The end of first book aimed to require purchase of the next is what disappoints me. Excellent storytelling doesn't require that type of game

I rarely read fiction, but wanted a change from my usual fare of books covering heavy topics in a serious manner. This book was exactly what I needed! It keeps an excellent pace from chapter to chapter, and I found it difficult to put it down and sleep, because I wanted to know what happened next. Every chapter left me wanting more. The characters are intriguing and well written, and the action is plentiful. I am eager to see where the story goes in the next book!

However I consider a story that ends badly as a bad story. I realize the author may be planning a follow up, but still consider it much waste of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cliff Hanger!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2023
An excellent story, beautifully told. However we are left on a real cliff hanger! Which of course was what the author intended, this being the first book in a trilogy. Sadly as a stand alone novel this was unsatisfactory as too many loose ends need tidying away, and the reader is left up in the air. I’d suggest binge reading the three books at the same time

Not my usual reads but one that’s been on my reading list for some time and I’m thrilled I got stuck in.

As historical fiction goes this is one of my first plunges in the genre and it kept me hooked from start to finish. From a voyage on the Titanic and then other ships we follow the plight of a young lady who rescued from the ice. What follows is a romantic story with a thrilling thread weaved cleverly through the plot.

Daring, adventure, desperate struggles both inner turmoil and environmental - this first in the trilogy has it all. And what an ending.

An excellent read from the talented Tom Kane.
