Broken Interface - Kernel: Post Apocalyptic Zombie LITrpg Progression Fantasy Kindle Edition
Early one morning, the world ended. The devastating Alpha Event rewrote the very laws of reality itself, transforming peaceful cities and communities into sprawling hellscapes filled with flesh-eating zombies - and worse!
For Daniel, a Zombie Apocalypse couldn’t have happened at a worse time. If he’d been back at the farm, he might have stood a better chance than most. Instead, Daniel woke up in a distant hotel room armed with nothing but a hangover.
To add insult to injury, as he and other survivors shelter for safety in their hotel, Daniel discovers another misfortune. To help guide them through the horrors of this new reality, each suvivor is supposed to have been grafted with an interface - a guide to help them level up, develop their skills, and better understand the world around them.
Daniel’s is broken.
Nevertheless, this new reality has gifted Daniel with other strange, new powers - powers which could enable him to unite what other survivors they can find into a force capable of surviving in this cruel, new world.
Kernal is the first book in the Broken Interface series, set in Alex Kozlowski’s Alpha Physics Universe - described by readers as “a breath of fresh air” in the LitRPG genre, with stories that are “human, thought out, and realistic.”
Style. Single third person POV, LITRPG, with gore, adult themes but no explicit sexual content.
Warning. There will be a cute pet.

About the author

Alex first fell in love with both computer games and writing when he was on a scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics. After graduating and getting a job writing was put to the side while that pesky thing called life got in the way.
A career in banking delivering complicated quantitative banking applications resulted. Very stereotypical;
Boring job as a banker - tick,
Suburban home - tick
Three kids - tick
Two dogs - tick
You get the point.
A little thing called a global pandemic then came along and gave Alex a chance to return to his dream of becoming a writer. Having recently read a variety of LITRPG books it was a genre that Alex was excited to explore in order to create a world that readers could immerse themselves into. With the familiarity of the gaming world gained from playing WOW, Skyrim, Fallout amongst others there is simple joy in creating an imaginative magic filled world that is at everyone’s fingertips. In his writing Alex aims to capture the feeling that he loves of being able to put yourself into a gaming world, develop your character and exploit the rules to the fullest.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023I have to be honest, I had avoided reading this book for quite some time. I didn’t know what to expect from the concept of a broken interface. I remembered, reading a book similar where a characters interface didn’t function properly. It was a good book as well. I figured I’d get the same thing. Boy was I wrong. Without spoiling anything I would just tell you this. This is a long book with depth action good story and pacing. I’ll be the first to admit they do a lot of the same things in this book but it never gets boring. It is nice to see the character grow develop and then you wonder what’s next. This is one of those books for after reading 737 pages. I’m going right to the next book.
MESSAGE TO THE AITHOR
I always write a note to the author as well now this is spoiler, heavy. Man, this was a great book. I didn’t know what to expect, but I loved how you gave us a unique environment for the story to take place in. I’ve read the post apocalyptic LITRPG’s before I’ve never thought once about one taking place in a hotel. I had to completely rethink how battleships work. While on the topic of battles, I do have to say man I feel the characters are a bit under powered here. Even the MC he doesn’t have super strength or super speed he has traps. Don’t get me wrong he got stronger that was great to see, but it felt, a little too lucky for them to even have survived. I mean I just felt like the world was too apocalyptic around them. Like literally, there was no hope. How could they ever get out of this mess. I don’t know how to say it I just think they’re a little too weak. Not that I want them trumps in enemies, but I do want to see them gain some strength and be able to hold their own. I look at the enemies out there, and I just say they’re dead.
Not one of the things I’m hoping to see is that broken interface get fixed. That’s what I think. Really would be nice. Who’s gonna face might be broken but either fix it or let him develop some new interface with his core. Lastly, I thought it was great to see Lost in a story Here people died and see that the MC was affected by it. I know all of the people that died it here got to me a little bit. I wasn’t shedding tears or anything but I saw how dire things were. One final note, I am concerned with so many of these classes people chose that are not combative. I know they’re necessary, but to me when the post pop elliptic things started happening. I couldn’t see why someone wouldn’t choose a combative class now when I find out they got to make a choice. It seems weird very weird that someone would choose to be a cleaner. I could see if it was just thrust upon them but even then I don’t see the use of these classes and why they’re even available not when something can literally kill you you would think only combat classes would be available. Maybe you have the other options as sub classes, but anyway that uses a non-combat class is pretty much dead unless they can get protection. I think it’s a bit of a flaw to be honest. I would choose a combat class and just learn to cook or live in a filthy room. Unless I could see some reason that these non-combat classes can do some extraordinary things. You know like make food for 5000 people from nothing. Yes, something that biblical in nature. Anyway, loved the book absolutely loved it. I’m going to go read the second book and I will follow your Webseries on RoyalRoad. I become a Patreon subscriber when I see more recent postings beyond book 3
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2022It took me a couple chapters to realize this was set in the same even as the Alpha Physics series, and this brings me joy as I love when authors build settings that cross series/books/characters.
The writing is awesome for the most part and I’m glad the MC isn’t essentially a rewrite of the previous MC, HOWEVER I do have a major point of hate with a character in the book, even if it should be small (will go over this towards the end).
Overall, the characters are well rounded and the MC has a unique power/obstacle, that is not “chosen one” level but more like “is he luck or unlucky?” With believable power curve for the most part, but it did introduce one plot hole specific to his power. He can grow vines/wood/plants throughout this building using a few living cells to “start” the process, but he still needs to scavenge wood to build and craft? I would think that using a living piece of wood would be superior for most of his applications (and even more efficient for certain applications). But this can be written off as a skill/knowledge issue with the MC.
The companion characters are pretty much nameless, as they probably should be to keep things moving. The characters mentioned are decently significant, with their importance ranging from scene to scene, rather than a ‘catch all’ side character. Ivey defies this a little bit due to issues mentioned next (related to the aforementioned hated character). There is also some issues with the human survivors, which is good. Not every human will get along and go with the flow so the author does a good job of adding this in, as well as side characters not always being “yes man” to the MC. There is even a bit of a romantic issue thrown in without feeling needless, which actually breathes like foreshadowing for future internal conflict (Author you know of whom I speak, please let him die in a good way even if he’s a worthless turd).
The relationship between Ivey and Dan is convoluted and to be honest, it would have almost been better if the interface wasn’t able to communicate and was stuck as a “passenger.” The first series we got to see Input from the interface of the primary MC, but here we get input from one of the secondary MCs’ interface, and to be honest? He is annoying… and not in a good way. Reading his “entries” was not fun or even entertaining beyond one joke revolving around the Shocked Pikachu meme. The first series ‘journal entry’ chapters were informative and fit well, and the new interface doesn’t give the same feeling or even a good feeling to the story at this point. Hoping this changes but currently, I want to Ivey to rip those grains out like the first series MC threatened to do.
MOST IMPORTANTLY WHATS IN THE BOX!!! Lol
*Edit* After joining the authors Patreon and reading the thoughts and intent behind the character, I am leaving my original comments on the interface HOWEVER I want to add that there is some information that isn’t obvious about the interface’s personality. The interface is broken due to the events in the opening of the book and it’s ego (and hopefully naming schemes) is what makes the character distasteful compared to the first series interface, who was a jerk, yes, but it was obvious that he was the experienced and intelligent being he was supposed to be, who made a sacrifice to ensure the MC survives. At this stage it may be early to judge the new interface but currently it being broken (not just functionally, but… mentally?) explains a lot of the issues I have with it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2022A post apocalypse survival story. The magic system, world building, and characterization are good. The magic system in particular has some interesting concepts. The MC is very well done- capable and bold while still remaining relatable. The pacing is just ok though. As a post apocalyptic survival story, humanity is trying to regroup and get it's bearings in the new reality. Although Kozlowski does a good job keeping the focus on the MC, the nature of the story necessitates a fair bit of survivor group organization type stuff.
All in all a good read and a promising start to a new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huzzah
Huge fan of the first series, and was honestly expecting more of a gap before the next one came out.
Loved the new MC, very interested to see his growth throughout the series as it will, by necessity, be pretty much from the complete OTHER end of the spectrum from the last series.
There are some typos and whatnot, but I can hardly complain seeing as I was so happy to see this released as quickly as it was. I flagged the ones I noticed with Kindle - not actually sure how that system works and if they make their way to the author/publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing with an engaging world and plot
I think I really like the writing of Alex Kozlowski.
Maybe it is an Aussie thing, but I have read many Australian authors that didn’t click, but the two series of Kozlowski’s I have read do.
I am not a review that summarises the plot, go read the book and find that out.
This is an engaging LitRPG book, as is the other series, where the RPG bit makes sense in a why the interface is here way that anchors the books better than a “going into the matrix”, or “whisked to another dimension”, or “aided and went for another go round in a magic world”.
I am at the point where I am not sure if this is a Tower Climb sort of series or not, which is good, since I want more than the early LitRPG gave me.
This is good writing with good character development, reasoned goals, and more.
The light romance sub-plots are a relief to ridiculous harem style drivel, or straight line main plus amazingly coincidental alliance building romances with almost telepathic coincidence of goals. I don’t know where the romantic thread will end up, and that’s nice.
Nice bits of tension, unexpected outcomes, side quests, sub plots, fleshed out supporting characters, without obvious tropes (ato me at least).
Very much looking forward to book 2 of this and more from Alex Kozlowski.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and well paced
I realise personal taste will colour my views, but for me, this is a great book with an enjoyable story. Supported by the relationships interplay that elevates it further. The jury is out on the autistic AI and I shall see whether it grows on me. Interesting non the less. I find it difficult to think any reader of this genre not enjoying this and would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start is slow and a little clumsy, but then it’s a fun and exciting story!
A new series describing the Alpha Physics Event from a different perspective.
If you came across this book first, you might want to look at the „Alpha Physics“ Series, it’s complete, but together with this fledgling series part of a larger cycle.
I don’t have much to say about this book without resorting to spoilers. It’s well written and in this case because of the circumstances the MC finds himself in, not that much of a litRpg story. I think it goes more in the direction of cultivation or traditional fantasy, we will see how the story goes on.
I will definitely buy the next book!
