A heartbreaking story with a Happily Ever After ending!

Best Friends to Lovers
“Officer Fox, I’ve heard a lot about you.” His tone is even.
“Sir, all good things, I hope.” I straighten my stance and give my full attention to my new commanding officer. I’m convinced I’ve just blown that good first impression I was after.
Major Clark takes a few steps toward me, then crosses his arms and leans against the edge of his desk.
“Yes, all good things. And how about we keep it that way?” he warns, raising a brow, and I don’t have to ask what he’s referring to.
I gulp. “Yes, sir.” Clearly, his daughter is off-limits. Which is a shame since my career indicates that I like to push them.

Heartbreaking story of loss and finding love again!
Standing on shaky legs, I watch the person who’s been keeping me together the best he could, take off—on a plane, no less. My mom wraps her arm around me, and I lean into her, knowing I’m going to need to start relying on her more now. They’ve been trying to convince me to stay at my parents’ house while Dax is gone, but I refuse. Heaven forbid I’m ever left alone. They think I’ll break, but I’m already broken. Some pieces of me are more shattered than others. So much so, that at times, I think once I’m able to pull the pieces back together, I’m going to look like a starry night sky. I’ll either be brightly lit, or barely flickering as darkness attempts to consume me.

A Must Read Romance! The author breaks your heart into a million pieces and then slowly mends it back together!
I’ve accepted the constant war my heart and mind wage against one another, but for now, everything my heart wants must be put on hold. The war isn’t over. It’s just a battle I’ll have to face another day.

Ten years ago, I wrote Broken Wings.
Ten years later, I still have the same fierce love for this novel and its characters.
Broken Wings is a military romance novel. If you're triggered by tragedy surrounding the military and/or you're not into stories that rip your heart to shreds and then slowly piece it back together... the Broken & Mended series isn't for you.
Despite many words being deleted from the original edition, this 10th Anniversary Edition has been updated with a prologue and extended scenes.
As always, thank you for taking a chance on this book that holds so much meaning to me. Make sure to check out the acknowledgements for the backstory.

Can I start off by saying that this book might be in my top favorite books of all time?! I could not put it down!
This is a heartbreakingly beautiful story about three amazing people. Lynsie Fox, her husband Lincon and his best friend Dax Adams. Lincon and Dax have been best friends since they were children. They both had a dream of becoming pilots. Lincon joined the military and not too long after, Dax joined him as well.
Lincon met the General's daughter, Lynsie, and was instantly in love. They married soon after. Lynsie, Lincon and Dax were like the three amigos. They were always together. Not wanted Dax to be the third wheel, Lynsie started fixing him up with every girl she can think of, but for some reason he never wanted any of them.
"Sometimes it's when you aren't looking that you find what you've been needing all along without ever knowing it was what you wanted...
Sometimes there are things you want, but know you'll never have...because they aren't yours to have." ~Dax
Lynsie decides to leave it alone and move on. Lincon and Lynsie are so great together and their love is so strong. They have what you would call a "picture perfect" relationship. But the bad thing is, is that you never know how long a good thing will last.
During a Forth of July celebration, a flight stunt goes wrong and the lives of Dax and Lynsie are changed forever. How do you move on from such tragedy? How can you truly breathe again?
Dax knows that he has to do everything in his power to be there for Lynsie no matter what. Funny thing is that he needs her just as much.
"I've already made an unspoken vow to myself and Lincon that I'll be whatever Lynsie needs. If it's in my capabilities, I'll make it happen."~Dax
The heartbreak that these characters go though was so emotionally heartbreaking that I had to stop reading at certain points to collect myself. I was a wreck!!
Dax. Oh, that man. He's amazing!! Not only is he dealing with his own grief, but he also has to push his feelings aside. Feelings that he's kept hidden for so long.
"How can something that comes so naturally feel so wrong?"~Dax
Lynsie feels so scared all the time. She can't move forward. The only thing that she has, the only thing that helps the pain is Dax.
"You're my life raft, Dax"
As they live day by day, things slowly start changing. Suddenly, it's not all about comfort anymore. Comfort has moved into something more. Something they never saw coming and they have a hard time stopping it.
"But now you know that I will always be yours...always have been."~Dax
"You don't hold me back, Lynsie. You move me forward."
Can two broken people mend their broken hearts together? Is it wrong? Is it right? Can love prevail?
"Thank you for loving me."
"I never had a choice."
OH MY GEE!!!!! This book!! I cried. Like seriously ugly cried through most of this book! I could never imagine going through this. Whether it was myself or someone i knew. It would be so hard. Erika, you are truly amazing with words. I was hooked from the first page. Thank you for sharing this part of military life with us.
I recommend this book to every single person!! You will laugh, smile, mourn, cry, break, then ugly cry again, swoon and then cry some more. If I could give 100 starts for this book, I would!! Wonderful!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2014Lynsie is a girl who has grown up around the Army. She has an Army pilot husband and father. Her husband’s best friend, Dax Adams, is his co-pilot. Dax, has not yet settled down. Lynsie, a romantic at heart, makes it her mission to find that special woman for Dax to settle down with and starts setting him up on dates. Dax has lost the one woman he truly loves and knows he can’t always get what he wants, so he plays along with Lynsie’s match-making.
Lincoln and Lynsie’s marriage is filled with love. Lincoln adores her and we are shown this throughout their story. Lynsie is the love of Lincoln’s life and Lincoln is the love of Lynsie’s life.
Lynsie really wants to start their family, but at first, Lincoln is hesitant. Then, Lincoln experiences a tragedy and re-evaluates life and decides its too short and waiting to have a family is not what he wants anymore.
We can see that from the very beginning of the book that Dax is in love with his best friends girl. Forbidden and wrong, Dax keeps his feelings in check and never crosses that line past friends.
Tragedy strikes Lynsie, Lincoln, and Dax and no one is ever the same. Dax needs to keep a promise and he will do everything in his power to do so. He is caught in a tough position, but he checks his feelings once again and stands up and is the man that he needs to be.
Overall:
Ugh. Ok let me say that this is so vague and probably super confusing. That is because this is not a typical love triangle, or love story for that matter. It is really hard to review this book without giving EVERYTHING away. I actually probably said too much as it is. Anyway, I digress. Erika has outdone herself on this book. It is absolutely her best book thus far. So much more depth and growth in Broken Wings!! I fell in love with her writing for a very simple reason..IT COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN. With that said, Erika has taken her experience being an army brat, and the real experiences of her army pilot father and incorporated all that into this story. The emotional level of this book is off the charts. The times I cried in front of people, was a little embarrassing. Erika, seriously, I said you are an author to watch, and I am standing behind that. I have read everything you have put out and this is it!! Your star is climbing. I can’t wait to see more from you and where you are going!!!
Favorite quotes/lines:
“Love you to the sky and back, Lynsie Pearl.” ~ Lincoln
“I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone or anything in my entire life. You own me Lynsie. I never even had a choice.” ~ Dax
“Words can’t fix things that are broken. Only time will, and even thats debatable.” ~ Lynsie
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2014Broken wings is a beautiful stand alone novel about love, loss, friendships and healing. The beauty of this story is in the author's ability to bring you in to the story and keep you there. I felt this story through the eyes and hearts of the characters that this author created. A great book to me is when I can feel and not just read the words on the pages. In Broken Wings, I felt like I was in the same place the characters were and I could picture their faces and feel what they were feeling. Even after completing the story I am still thinking of the story and the characters.
I would highly recommend this book. This is an emotional book but does have a lot of happiness and some humour as well.
I have read a few of Erika Ashby's books and I have to say this is definitely her best work. I really loved this story in it's entirety but, I was really taken back by the growth from this author. This book has great detail and the story is different from what is out there. I enjoyed the fact that I wasn't reading a different form of the same story I have already read by other authors . I will definitely be looking for this author's next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally charged romance about love and loss
This novel is about love, sacrifice, loss, grief, healing and family. I found it believable and touching.
The other (one star) review here argues the book was boring and badly structured. I did not find this to be the case. Granted, there is a lot of background in the beginning detailing the relationship between Lincoln and Lynsie before we get to the romance between the two protagonists Lynsie and Dax, but that added to the story in my view. It was fundamental to make the characters and plot come alive and make the rest of the story plausible and 'real'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Nobility of Restraint
Dax knows restraint. I don't think I'm giving too much away by letting slip that for as long as he's known her, he's been in love with the beautiful Lynsie.
That, of course, would be all fine and dandy if it weren't for the small matter of her being married to, and desperately in love with, his best friend Lincoln.
Consequently, unlike so many other novels where the alpha male swoops in to get the girl, Dax does the noble thing ... nothing. Stays friends with Lincoln, and with Lynsie, suffers patiently as she sets him up on date after date, trying to find him the perfect woman all the while knowing he's already found her, and she isn't available.
Then, in a tragic twist of fate, Lincoln is removed from the picture leaving the road open for Dax to be exactly what Lynsie needs in her time of sorrow, a friend. Just a friend, and maybe someday, eventually, something more.
There's a wonderful nobility in Dax's restraint. Time and again pushing aside his own wants, needs and desires, because the strongest of his desires is to see to Lynsie's needs. That's not just a romance novel cliche, that's real love shared via the written word.
There are books that stick with you long after you've read them, and I strongly suspect that this is one of them, because, strange as it may seem, it stuck with me for a year before I got around to reading it.
The wife read it a year ago, and as she does with most books she reads, she told me all about it as she was reading, and even that second hand retelling of the story was powerful.
Reading it for myself, even more so.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written!
oh my word!
What a heart wrenchingly beautifully written book. This was a story of a hidden live triangle, 2 best friends and their girl!
Lynsie is so much in love with her husband Lincoln and is desperate to have a baby with him, she is also trying to find their dear best friend Dax a girl to have some of the love Lynsie has with Lincoln, what she doesn't realise is that Dad has been hiding his true feelings for Lynsie, after all he is an honourable guy, relishing in friendship! He goes along with Lynsie's matchmaking but never has a second date.
So as things move along, Lincoln is taking part in the 4th July celebrations, he ius after all a pilot in the army. He also has a surprise for her! when disaster strikes, causing her huge grief, oh my such sadness! heartbreaking.
Their friend Dax also a pilot was with Lynsie when disaster struck, he went above and beyond the call of friendship, even burying his feelings.
This was a beautifully written story, full of emotion, love, hate, despair, desire, compassion and passion! Then throw in a pregnancy and more training missions and you have a truly emotional roller coaster of a read!
The love Lynsie shared with her husband was totally different to the live she shared with Dax, which I really thought was going to get overlooked. Lynsie and Dax truly deserved to find a love that was going to get them both through the worst heartache anyone could endure.
I absolutely loved this standalone book, thankfully all ending in the right place!

5.0 out of 5 stars coup de coeur ❤️❤️
