    Full disclosure, I don’t read many fantasy novels, and I don’t read a lot of young adult literature either. That said, I was impressed and intrigued by Ivy Logan’s Broken and her telling of Talia’s trials and tribulations. Broken is a love story, an intense action tale, and a battle of good versus evil —all within the fantasy world Logan has carefully crafted. Once you accept the magical world of the novel, you’re in for an exciting and satisfying ride.

    Broken is essentially the story of Talia’s life. She develops into a heroic, strong young woman and mother. As a half-blood sorceress, she has limited but effective magical powers. Talia is easy to relate to, and we pull for her all the way to the end. This is, in a way, a woman’s story. All of the female characters are likable, talented, for the most part beautiful, and often have magical powers. Most of the male characters are tall, handsome, kind, and genuinely good people, but they all play secondary roles in the novel. There are though a couple of notable exceptions who will make you cringe.

    Talia’s tale is a romance as well as a fantasy adventure. From the start, we expect some kind of happily-ever-after ending. It’s a fantasy, after all. This means the plot is sometimes predictable, and as readers, it’s a comfort to know that things will somehow work out just the way we want it to.

    Broken is well-written and engaging, and Logan has shown—even in this, her debut novel—that she has mastered the genre. Broken covers two generations of time, which means Logan has to do a lot of telling rather than showing. Even so, Logan’s descriptions put us in the middle of every scene. We see and feel what the characters experience, including some intense moments we won’t soon forget. Logan has demonstrated the skills to keep her projected audience enthralled and to provide exceptional entertainment even for those of us for whom young adulthood is no more than a fast-fading memory.

    I recommend this book to anyone who welcomes a chance to escape into a fantasy world peopled by memorable characters and plenty of magic. You won’t be disappointed.

    BROKEN by Ivy Logan is a young adult, coming-of-age fantasy about a young woman named Talia whose mother was an immortal sorceress and father a human being.

    Caitlin rose from the Well of Life as a full-grown sorceress, a guardian, and the first of her kind. She was born to be the protector of the humans, but before she could begin her duty as guardian, wraiths (spirits of past sorceresses) reveal a prophecy to her. Knowledge of the prophecy alone was enough to change Caitlin’s life. Despite the warnings of the wraiths Caitlin met and fell in love with a human named Michael, and they had two children together. This is where Talia’s coming-of-age story begins and things get complicated and fascinating.

    This is a beautifully told, well-written, gripping fantasy about love, family, found family, good vs. evil, and self-sacrifice. I enjoyed the writing style, pacing, and uniqueness of the story. The author built fascinating worlds and the characters were well developed and relatable. I especially loved Caitlin and Talia—two captivating, skillful, and powerful female characters.

    If you enjoy young adult fantasy with excellent world-building, an exciting storyline, and strong, passionate female characters this book is for you.

    Writing fantasy requires the writer to grab the reader by the hand and transport them to their world – preferably in the first few pages. This Ms Logan succeeds with. It’s not that she drowns the reader in descriptions of her invented universe – it is more that she treats multiple worlds, wraiths, powerful sorceresses and other paranormal elements as perfectly normal. And I, as the reader, happily go along with Ms Logan, entering a world where the powerful witches have decided to abandon Earth after the humans initiated a war on all supernatural beings. But these witches—Heichi, in Ms Logan’s book—have a deeply rooted sense of responsibility for the witless humans, which is why they leave behind several of their kind to act as guardians, protecting humans from supernatural beings who somehow force through the protective veils.
    Caitlin is one such guardian, born into the role (and a major plus for how Ms Logan described the birth of a new sorceress) Caitlin has immense powers, and like all of her kind she has gorgeous blue hair. She is also totally disconcerted when, only minutes after her “birth”, she hears voices in her head muttering about love and betrayal and painful loss. A prophecy, as it turns out, and poor Caitlin will be buffeted every which way by fate—as will her daughter, Talia. Except that Talia isn’t burdened by a whispered prophesy.
    Other than the two female leads, Broken features some very likeable male characters—men who aren’t intimidated by the evident superior skills of their partners or have any desire to restrict them. A nice, modern touch that would, perhaps, not fly in a historical novel but which feels perfectly natural in Ms Logan’s world.
    Ms Logan spins a gripping narrative. Yes, there is some head-hopping, yes, there are times when Ms Logan’s timeline is a tad confusing, but this reader quickly becomes invested in both Caitlin and Talia and just has to read and read until the plot reaches its conclusion. A most enjoyable way of spending a couple of hours!

    'Broken: Broken But Not Lost' acknowledges the brokenness in the world while maintaining a position of hope. When writing for a young adult audience, this is so important, and author Ivy Logan succeeds in this regard.

    Within the narrative, there are flashes of brilliant writing, which I anticipate will grow as the author matures as a writer. This line, for example, touches the depths of Talia's grief so well: "No longer a unit, we splintered apart until there was nothing left to be broken." This is a line that remains with me, and will resonate with many.

    Yet, the story is one of hope, and of love. As the characters take a stance based in hope, and in love recalled or love now experienced, they overcome. True, in real life we do not always overcome, but when we begin from a position of hope, we are committing to the possibility of success.

    The key characters are well-rounded, in their failings and their aspirations. The main events, tragic as they are, are set in motion by love and compassion. Will love and compassion be able to restore the balance? We read on, eager to learn more.

    There are many surprises in the final chapters, and even as I anticipated outcomes, I was often left with a sense of "I did not see that coming." That is so satisfying! Stylistically, at times more objective description could be employed, but I stand by the five stars; this novel holds the attention, tells a fascinating story of courage and love, and sees past the losses to affirm the possibilities. Most of all, it is written with love, by an author who seems to understand brokenness, but still chooses love. I look forward to reading more of Ivy Logan's work.

    This novel is set in an intriguing magical universe where the supernatural and natural worlds are divided by a fathomless void. Broken is a sometimes complex, epic adventure where forbidden boundaries are crossed, and lives are saved and lost.

    The protagonist emerges as Talia, a half-blood sorceress whose family are cruelly separated. Her existence becomes one of endurance, sacrifice and the unexpected bloom of love - which has consequences.

    Talia eventually faces the most complex challenges of her life. Her survival depends on the will of greater beings and the love of those closest to her. But Talia’s fate is uncertain.

    I found it particularly appealing that the book can be enjoyed on two levels: as a young adult fantasy and with greater depth. Broken contains philosophical fundamentals: the values of honesty and courage versus the consequences of hate and envy. Running parallel is the journey to discovering self-worth and the precious nature of family.

    I’m hugely impressed by Ivy Logan’s depth of imagination, enabling her to vividly describe settings where love triumphs over evil. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative and look forward to reading more from this talented author.

    ‘Broken’ is a YA tale of the supernatural involving parallel worlds and whose main focus is the Heichi Sorceresses whose job it is to guard the veil between the two realities. Ivy Logan’s Prologue to the book does a good job in painting the war between humans and immortals, known as the Purge, which serves as a background to the story.
    This is well-structured and well-paced novel with all the usual ingredients one would expect – a prophecy, magic and divided loyalties. It also contains some strong female characters including the central protagonist. And, of course, there is romance…
