- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2024Mindfulness for Beginners by AJ Cameron is a guide on mindfulness that is easy to read and down to earth. I’m a senior citizen, and I’ve read some on mindfulness to help with loneliness and stress, etc., but this is a good reminder to incorporate it more into my daily life. The writing is clear and the ideas are understandable, so it’s a good introduction to mindfulness. The tips on mindful breathing and mindful eating are helpful. The book is not overwhelming, and I felt as though I could start doing it right away. Like the 4 x 4 breathing was something that I started right away. The author includes a section with resources like apps and websites for anyone looking for more information. I was already familiar with some of the benefits of mindfulness, but the book gave me the encouragement I needed to bring it back into my everyday routine. It reminded me to get back into Tai Chi, which I really used to enjoy; I just needed a little push. So, if you’re looking for an easy introduction to mindfulness or a quick refresher, this book is a great choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2023This little, basic introduction is ideal for someone who is just stepping into practicing mindfulness. It was also good for me as a gentle refresher. Although the author does not offer their “qualifications” or cite studies , personally I was okay with this. I know the studies and the impact mindfulness has (physically, mentally, and emotionally)—I just need reminders and encouragement to start incorporating it into my life more! The provided information is easy to grasp, and is not at all overwhelming. I read it in one read, and I love how simply it is written. There is a useful chapter with additional resources (websites, apps, and online communities) at the end of the book. There are so many other written resources to build on your knowledge and mindfulness practice, but I think this book does a good job of showing how to easily begin right now integrating mindfulness throughout the day so that it eventually becomes seamless—which is the ultimate goal.

Cameron’s approach makes mindfulness feel within reach for anyone, offering insights into mindful breathing, eating, self-compassion, and even parenting. The book balances historical context with modern research, showing how mindfulness can positively impact mental and physical health. It also includes resources like apps and websites, making it easy for beginners to start integrating these techniques into everyday life.
What I found particularly valuable is how the book caters to a wide audience—from teens to adults, and beginners to those with some experience. Cameron's clear explanations, combined with examples and recommendations, help readers develop a meaningful mindfulness practice. It isn’t just an introduction; it’s a guide to cultivating a calm, compassionate, and stress-free lifestyle that’s easy to understand and implement, even for young readers. And I liked how you can find time for meditation and mindfulness even during mundane tasks like housekeeping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop for a moment.
Unusually, I managed to read this in one setting. The further into the book I travelled, the more focused I became. Everyone should read, digest, and reflect on their life choices. Highly recommended as a nudge to stop and think.

4.0 out of 5 stars A basic yet effective guide
This is a rather basic albeit helpful pocket book for those who are new to the practice of mindfulness. I note that most of this information can be freely found online however, and that the author makes no mention of their qualifications or specific references for the material presented.
I would rate this book as 3.5 stars, however I rounded it up to 4 stars because the author's intentions are to improve the mental, emotional and physical well being of others which is to be commended.
The book is presented using simple language and concepts that are easy to grasp. As it is a short book, it will not overwhelm those who get distracted easily when reading. There are several useful tips and resources cited so that the reader can explore the topic further if they are looking to expand on what the book offers.
Mindfulness for Beginners is a basic yet effective self help guide. Many readers will benefit from adopting the suggested practices and feel lighter after reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well organised book on mindfulness
Mindfulness for Beginners provides a good overview of Mindfulness. The book is well organised, with each chapter having an introduction to the topic and then some meaningful actions you can apply. For example, the chapter on Mindful Breathing, has techniques on how to breathe mindfully.
Topics include mindful breathing, movement, eating, listening, observation and self-compassion. There are celebrity endorsements at the end of the book, detailing well-known names where mindfulness has positively impacted their lives. There is also a section that includes examples of where mindfulness has been shown through research to help certain conditions, for example, using mindful eating to help manage diabetes. The book ends with a list of apps that could be used.
Although a fairly quick read, I found the book to have a lot of useful content. The section on Mindful Eating was interesting, particularly that food tastes better when we eat mindfully. The meditation techniques are not something I would be likely to use (although I’m sure others will), but there are other things I will try out, such as mindfully listening to nature when on walks, and the loving-kindness meditation to foster self-compassion.
Overall, it’s a good read for those who want to learn more about mindfulness, including practical applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little piece of mindfulness magic
This book is the perfect introduction to mindfulness. Clearly written, with plenty of interesting concepts, it teaches the ins and outs of mindfulness. Although it is suitable for beginners, those practicing mindfulness for some time will also find it valuable.
I found the chapter on understanding the connection between mind and body particularly interesting, along with the science behind it.
Geared towards helping you practice mindfulness regularly; the book also offers practical advice for overcoming obstacles. As if all the above isn't enough, there is also a handy section near the end suggesting wider reading on the subject, which makes it great for students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A short, but thorough guide to mindfulness for beginners
I liked the author's style of getting straight to the point in this guide, no nonsense, no unnecessary waffle or rambling on just to fill pages, it tells you want you want to know quickly. For a non-fiction beginners guide book, this to me is how it should be, you're not wanting a story, you want the facts, the detail, the explanations. It covered many different types of mindfulness with practical examples, many of which I had never heard of or thought of. I have already started applying mindfulness techniques in my daily life and feeling the benefits since reading this.
