Built to Fall: A Rock Star Romance Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4,417 ratings

“You’re perfect for this job, Claire. He won’t want to sleep with you. You’re not his...type.”

Dominic Cantrell has been famous almost as long as I’ve been alive, but he remains a dark, volatile mystery.

I know why I was hired to handle Dominic’s PR while he’s on tour. It’s not because of my experience—I have next to none. It’s because I’m safe. Plain, quiet, shy, with more-than-ample curves, I won’t distract him.

What I didn’t count on was Dominic distracting me instead. I shouldn’t be so drawn to him. He’s too old for me, too closed-off, and definitely too angry, but I’ve been
a good girl for far too long.

Why can’t I be just a little bit bad, especially when my rock star fantasy is so willing to corrupt me?

Our fling has an expiration date at the end of the tour. No strings, no feelings, no heartbreak when it’s over.

I tell myself I won’t fall. But I don’t know if I’m built that way.

Julia Wolf writes sexy rockers, grumpy billionaires, snarky heroines, and bad ass women. She’s a firm believer in happily ever afters, no matter how rocky the road is to get there.

She doesn’t believe in “guilty pleasures”, only pleasure. Reading about a plus size woman who gets absolutely railed by a hot rock star is pleasure. Reading about a damaged college student whose flaws are valued and loved by the grumpy guy next door is pleasure. Reading about love in a small town or big city or on a tour bus is pleasure. Reading romance is pleasure!

Julia lives in Maryland with her husband and three crazy, beautiful children. When she’s not writing romance, she’s reading it. Some of her favorite things are, in no particular order: goats, books, coffee, and Target.

"Being hurt by the man who's supposed to love you doesn't mean you're not a strong woman. It means the man is weak."

Y'all. I am so freaking in love with this book! Everything was PURE perfection!! From the sassy and tough as nails heroine, our grumpy silver fox hero and a blend of seriously amazing side characters and a message all about loving who you are while recognising that you have to be whole in order to truly love anyone else, I am just SPEECHLESS. And yes, apparently that happens sometimes.😂😂

If you follow my reviews, you know that I am very vocal of my love for plus sized women in romances, and how much I love it when the woman's weight isn't the sole focus. As a plus sized women myself who bagged a hottie husband who has always seen & loved me and not the number on the scale, I absolutely LOVED how Dom connected with Claire's soul, and her looks were just an added bonus. And Dominic always made it clear how much of a goddess she was! Their sexual chemistry was off the charts hot -- seriously, this book has some of the hottest scenes this author has ever created -- but it was their emotional connection that I loved beyond everything else. Dominic may have been a rockstar that seemed to have the world at his feet, while Claire is a struggling almost-divorcee who is used to the world not giving her a second chance, and while they are complete opposites in every way, they connect in such a passionate and raw way. They see each other for who they truly are and who they want to be, instead of everyone else's preconceived notions. I just loved that so much!

The back and forth between these two was just pure gold! Their snark and witty banter was absolutely everything, and I know I've said this already, but I just loved how these two got one another on every single level.

Claire is easily one of my favorite heroines of all time! Thanks to her crappy ex, she has PTSD when it comes to violent men, and yelling and outbursts of any kind sets her off. But Dom is so gentle with her. Even though he can be abrasive, he always apologized to her when he unintentionally scared her, and made sure she knew it wasn't her fault for how she reacted. And then watching her grow and take back her power, and also knowing what she truly deserves?! All the tears for my girl here. I love her so freaking much.

Dom is a great hero too! Yes he's an ass at times, but he had his heart irrevocably broken in such a horrible way that it changed who he was. He hardened himself against the world, but it seems Claire always knows what he needs when he needs it. She also sees the things inside his heart and soul that he doesn't show anyone -- she just *gets* him. I love how much they support one another, and every time Dom kissed her shoulder, I melted into a pile of goo!!

Not going to lie, Julia had me scared during the last 15%. I was legit screaming at my kindle that they could not end like this, and then it all came together so beautifully!! I truly loved how much work these two did on themselves individually in order to really move on from their past traumas so they could love one another the way they both deserved. And that epilogue?! Oh gosh. Tears upon tears!

I'm just so convinced there's nothing this author can write! This book is easily one of my favorite books of hers to date, and I can't wait for you all to fall in love with Dominic and Claire!!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**

Overall, loved this story. The character development was great and it definitely holds your attention. There were a couple aspects that weren’t exactly my cup of tea (drug use and a visit to a strip club) but they don’t detract from the story. That’s just my personal preference and why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. I would certainly recommend this book if you’re looking for a story about two broken people who learn to fix themselves and in the process help to fix each other.

This book was enjoyable and the story line not as predictable as some authors. This was an age gap romance, 16 years between the hero and heroine. 26 to 42. The gap really wodens when one person hits their 70s and then that gap will feel wider. Only criticism is the cover model. The man is clearly closer to 60 than early 40s. This bugged me alot. Not that the man was not attractive, just not representative of his looks and vitality in the book.

I found this author on social media, and, bc she writes with plus-size ladies in mind, I knew I had to read it. OMG I'm glad I did, for so many reasons.
    1. The characters are so real, so rich, so well-written. Every time they spoke, every time they were described, I marveled.

    2. The sex scenes. Holy mother of hawwwwwwt! I read a lot of romance, but these scenes were fire. I think bc deep emotion ran through them, they made me feel the feels.

    3. The consistent thread of mental health - trauma, recovery, challenges to get through and overcome - it was all written with care, realism, and emotion so fragile I teared up.

This is my first Julia Wolf book, but no way it'll be my last. Enjoy!

I love age gap romances so adding in the R&R mix was icing on the cake. The secondary characters were pretty funny and added a nice balance to the story. Claire was a strong heroine who grew into her own quite well in the book. Dominic was an OTT alpha male when he wanted to be but his growth left a lot to be desired. It almost seemed to happen overnight. I loved the chemistry and the sex scenes were AMAZING!!! A few reasons why I rated this a 3 instead of 5 were the following

    <spoiler>

▪️I was hoping the age gap would play for of a role in the taboo element but it seemed to be pretty much a non issue. Also the hero reads like a guy in his late 20s not 40s.
▪️I wanted to see more of a resolution with the ex wife. She kept popping up in the story yet we did not get to see the hero cut ties with her or her reaction.
▪️The ex husband thing should have popped up in the story again. If he was escalating to that extent he would have found a way to confront her again. This could have created some great scenes. </spoiler>

I loved the epilogue at the end❤️

Don’t get me wrong. The story is amazing. I just expected more on the last chapter but overall this book was amazing. I laughed I cried. I felt stuff that I never knew I need to hear and understand this author did an amazing job. Miss Wolf did an awesome job by the way, and I had no complaints whatsoever.

Reviewed in Canada on June 20, 2023
This book was such an unexpected gem. I had not read Julia Wolf before and am not typically someone who gravitates towards rock star romances, but this book ended up touching me on so many levels. First of all, the two main characters both came into the story with their own histories and baggage which made them both relatable and fully developed complex human beings. I really appreciated that the curvy FMC was not without insecurities, but didn’t let them dictate her life. And those insecurities were not made a big deal of in the book but were handled in a very natural way that I have no doubt will resonate with many readers (e.g. the novelty of sitting on someone’s knee without worrying about being too heavy). I also think the realness and complexity of these characters are what made it believable that despite the significant age-gap and different circumstances, these two could be meant to be together at this stage of their lives. The HEA wasn’t easy and wasn’t a given, and the author steered clear of the trap that so many romances fall into of making us believe that all our problems can be solved and our emotional baggage cured by finding the right partner. That just isn’t how life works. And yet this book still found a way to make the HEA incredibly romantic and probably even more powerful by acknowledging that fact. Last, but certainly not least, the tension and the steam in this book was impeccable! One of the hottest scenes I have read in a while and the two main characters barely even touched! It all felt like the most wonderful foreplay, which rather than making you feel like you are missing out, simply makes the wait for the payoff all that more delicious!! Needless to say this won’t be my last Julia Wolf book! But let’s just say she had set the bar high! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Rock Romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2021
This is not your typical rock romance, not that Julia Wolf writes ‘typical’ rock romances, so that shouldn’t be a surprise, but this was a little bit more different than most.

Claire is 26, and she’s been married since she was 22 to the only man she’s ever slept with. One day she wakes up and realises that he’s been cheating on her and decides to leave.

Whilst working as an unpaid intern, her boss gives her an opportunity to go on tour with a rock star she admired when she was in middle school, as a paid PR assistant. He also happens to be her boss’s ex-husband and she chooses Claire because she doesn’t think she’ll be a temptation for Dominic.

Dominic is 42 and been a successful artist for 20 years. He’s also withdrawn, grumpy and damaged. He’s a bit of a recluse with only Marta, his PA as his friend. He likes the look of Claire straight away but knows to stay away from the pretty sweet and innocent young woman.

I love how these two are with each other. They allow themselves to jump full on into a relationship because there is a time limit on it, with the end of the tour. I like how Claire stands up for herself but also has compassion. I like how Claire slowly grows into herself as she makes friends, enjoys her job and falls for Dominic. I like how Dominic is affectionate, and lets Claire into his heart, venturing out into the world a bit more.

I also like how these two don’t do irreparable damage to each other whilst they are working out what they want. They hurt each other, but they aren’t cruel.

This is about a man not in the first flush of his career. He’s done the crazy living and doesn’t need to do it anymore. He’s not a happy man, but he still loves his work, so he continues to do it. Claire is someone just starting her career and she enjoys it and wants to succeed as someone independent from a relationship. She doesn’t want Dominic to sweep her off her feet and take her away from it all.

I think this story would work whether it was set in the music industry or not. This is a story about two people who each have their own problems but really like each other too. I enjoyed this book so much because I really liked all the characters, and loved spending time with them. They felt real and I was very invested in their happiness.

Julia Wolf writes great characters and great stories. She just always seem to hit the mark for me and I love her work.

Julia never ceases to amaze me with her writing. Built to Fall is yet another wonderful read. I love a well written rock star romance and Julia is slowly raising to become my favorite author with every new book she's publishing.
Claire is starting a new chapter in her life and what better way to do that if not going on a two month tour with her favorite Rock God. Her new job is PR to world famous Dominic Cantrell, they think she is a safe bet being young, shy and curvy. But as soon as they came face to face spacks start flying and the attraction is so palpable I could practically feel it . The chemistry of this couple was something different🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. The whirlwind affair they start will forever change them, because as much as they can control their thoughts and actions, the heart is acting on it's own.
Then there's that frienship I love in Julias books, even grouchy Dominic has a good friend and Claire has met some wonderful people on her journey to self discovery. There's something to say about a book where you love the side caracters so much you want them to have their own story. Hopefully they will get it.
Then there's the music! The Playlist is amazing!
And of course it couldn't be missing - the lyrics to one of Doms songs!!!
I'm usually torn about dual pov in books because sometimes the story is repetitive. This was not the case here. In fact I could imers myself in the caracters feelings be that Claire or Dominic.

I have read this series all out of order after reading a review for Callum’s book, and once I did, I was hooked.
I’ve now read all the books, completely out of order as I’ve still not had my fill. I’ve downloaded them one by one and kept hunting for the next hit :)
I’ve laughed, smiled, wanted alone time and even though I’m a little shaky from sleep deprivation, I could still do another.
Go on, stop listening to me ramble and jump in. It’s worth it.
