Butterface (A Hot Romantic Comedy) (The Hartigans Book 1) Kindle Edition
It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…
Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.
I recognize him immediately. The sexiest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.
But then he kisses me. And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.
Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.
But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.
Because this is not a make-over story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2019The Hook: Gina is not a pretty girl, and while she’s just fine with that, she’d really prefer not to be reminded that she falls far short of most people’s beauty standards. She’s got her brothers, an awesome group of friends, and her own successful business. So what if her face isn’t model perfect? She survived all the teasing in childhood, and she can survive a few immature jokes now, right?
Ford is a rule-follower, a cop who toes the line and wants everything done the right way. Something of a black sheep for not falling into the family business of firefighting, he’s just trying to solve his cases and avoid the immature antics of some of his coworkers. But when a kiss cam at a wedding lands him on screen with Gina, his superior thinks she might be the key to busting her brothers. Problem is, she’s a nice enough girl, and he’s not thrilled at having to lie to her to get closer to busting her brothers.
The Verdict: Finally a heroine who doesn’t look adorably perfect even at her worst! The title is what caught my eye, and the cover is what had me hitting the buy button a few seconds later. I’m used to beautiful heroines, or at the very least, the ones that our heroes think are beautiful, despite their flaws. But Gina’s really just ugly by most people’s standards, and that’s left her as the butt of jokes from the time she started socializing in kindergarten. That’s not to say she’s destined to die alone, but she knows her limits when it comes to romance, and she’s fine with not winning over the hottest guy in town.
Gina and Ford find themselves in an uncomfortable spot when a kiss cam lands on them at a wedding reception. Gina, the wedding planner, can’t just walk away or show her disdain for the situation, and Ford (a wedding guest) sees just how uncomfortable Gina is — so he kisses her. Some of Ford’s coworkers make things even more awkward when their mean-spirited prank lands Gina in Ford’s hotel room. And in any other story, that would be the end of it. But it turns out that Ford is investigating Gina’s family for their mob ties, and finagling his way into Gina’s house is the first step to making headway in his investigation.
There just aren’t words for how much I loved this book. I would imagine some readers might take issue with just how often Gina’s un-attractiveness is pointed out, but it’s really mentioned no more than other romance book heroine’s beauty is typically mentioned. And it serves to cement just how real Gina is. Still, she’s not written in a way that begs for pity — though one can’t help but cringe when she’s on the humiliating end of practical jokes. But she’s intelligent, social, successful, and really lots of fun, and that’s what ultimately has Ford so intrigued. It’s one of the few books I’ve read where a character’s outer beauty isn’t the catalyst for finding happily ever after.
Butterface is clever, witty, and often hilarious without going over the top, and Gina is a strong, wonderful heroine to root for. Her self-consciousness was easy to understand, but she did her damnedest not to let it hold her back, and it’s no wonder Ford ended up head over heels for her. That’s not to say that Gina and Ford didn’t have their flaws, though. Gina, despite her best efforts, lets her insecurities get the best of her when Ford’s dishonest intentions come out, and Ford (obviously) lies to her quite a bit in his efforts to get the info needed for his case. But in the end, these two manage to move past all the naysayers and obstacles in their way and heat up a romance refreshingly different than the usual trope.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025Kinda cheesy and kinda cute. I like the book. I do have a hard time when people are so judgmental and ugly to others for their looks so parts of this made me a little uneasy but I get what the point was. A little spicy and still a love story with good family love makes me happy. Now to start the next.

Genre: Rom-com
Gina Luca is a wedding planner with her own successful business. Ford Hartigan is a detective on the local police department, currently working on an organized crime task force. They meet at a wedding reception. The meeting included sharing an unintentional scorcher when the kiss-cam is trained on them. Ford got a room in the hotel where the reception is being held because he had 2 beers. He’s a real stickler for rules & regs. After he leaves the reception one of his coworkers , as a joke on Ford, convinces Gina that Ford really wants her, and gives her a key to his room. It’s a joke because Gina is apparently paper-bag ugly. The second meeting between Gina and Ford didn’t go well and she is humiliated. A few days later Gina finds a body in her attic and Ford investigates. Everyone is relatively sure it is her grandfather who went missing 20 years ago. Tommy “Big Nose” Luca was involved in organized crime (because of course he was, being of Italian descent and all). Gina’s brothers are loan sharks with a connection to the criminal organization Ford is investigating, so he moves in to “protect” her while gathering evidence for the case. Of course he does not tell her he is spying on her. While he is staying with her the attraction between them grows, with home improvements and witty dialogue included. Naturally, because “the course of love never did run smooth” there are obstacles.
I have a problem with this book. The premise of a good-looking man being attracted to a less good-looking woman and the woman’s esteem problems is not terrible. The plot involving Ford hanging out as part of his investigation and the h/H getting to know one another, though not unique, is well-presented. The grammar, usage, spelling, etc. are actually pretty good. However, I have a couple of issues.
First, why did the author feel the need to give the heroine an Italian name, when organized crime is involved. Come on! Use some imagination! Italians aren’t the only ethnicity associated with the mob. The brothers are pretty cartoonish in their goombah-ness, which ales the whole situation more a caricature than a family. Look, there are all kinds of criminal organization. Implying Mafia is unimaginative. I suggest a quick read of The Gangs of New York, or see the movie. Hey, WASPs can be criminal too!
Then there’s the heroine. Not plain. Not unattractive. UGLY. And she goes on and on about it. First of all, if she’s that ugly, how is she successful in her career? Studies show that attractive people are more successful, especially in positions where they interact with the public. If Gina is so ugly, wouldn’t a bride be loath to work with her? At any rate, the description is not of a truly ugly face. Perhaps if she had acne scars, bad teeth, and greasy hair she could be classified as ugly, but a big nose and frizzy hair, while not beautiful, is certainly not ugly. And anyway, if the character is truly a butterface, the author should have spent more time on how beautiful her body is. Instead, she’s described as having a nice body without much detail. Beauty is more than tits & a$$ and long legs.
I gave this 3 stars because I actually finished it. Hey, I paid for this! If I’d gotten it from the library I’d probably have returned it DNF...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not romance at all

Lines from this book:
"Well, there was no missing the family resemblance with Big Nose Tommy, and her eyes didn't quite fit her face, but it wasn't like she was some kind of snaggletooth troll with poisonous drool. She definitely didn't look like the women he normally dated, which made the fact that he'd gotten hard almost every time he'd thought about her during the past week more than little interesting. So how bad was she?"
This is a romance book??
Will not pay ever for such bad book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
This book was so enjoyable to read. I loved Gina and the chemistry between her and Ford sizzled. The story behind Gina's nickname, Butterface, broke my heart and I was rooting for her to get her happy ending. Throw in the fact that Ford is a cop and that Gina's brothers are somehow involved with the crime family at the center of Ford's current investigation, and you have a book that was very hard to put down! I will definitely look out for more books by Avery Flynn in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute treat
Wow but this was an awesome read that gave me all the feels. I love stories with complex characters that I feel a connection to and the lead couple here had me invested from the start. I enjoyed the sometimes brutal honesty in the book and I loved how important family was. I cannot wait to read the remaining books in the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Non mi è piaciuto
No, qualcosa non funziona in questo libro, mi dispiace ma l'ho trovato molto lento, noioso. Peccato, perché gli altri della serie non sono male. Ma questo si può anche saltare.
