MURDER AT THE CAFE BONBON: A 1920s cozy mystery in the Camille Divine Murder Mysteries Series - Book 6 Kindle Edition
Chief Inspector Richard Owen dresses carefully at his house in Chiswick. He is due to meet Lady Camille Divine at Café Bonbon, a well-known nightclub, after a six-week separation when he decided to visit his late wife’s relatives in the South of France. He is due to go back to work at Scotland Yard after a two-month sabbatical, but he and Camille have some unfinished business.
When they last saw each other in Paris they were parted before Richard had an opportunity to tell Camille what was on his mind. Camille’s cook, Knolly, had been taken ill at Camille’s house in Duke Street in London. Camille had been desperate to return to England to see Knolly, her cook and one of her dearest friends, to ensure she got the best treatment. Richard knew how much she cared about her staff and reluctantly said goodbye.
Six weeks later and they’re both back in London. It’s the perfect time to tell her what he’d so wanted to tell her in Paris, but an incident at the Café Bonbon where a cigarette girl is murdered seems as though it will thwart his intentions yet again. Will Richard get the chance to tell Camille about his past, or will their involvement in another murder mean he won’t get the chance to discover if Camille, the woman he has fallen in love with, is the woman he hopes she is? Will she accept his past life, or will she walk away?

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025Andrea Hicks has written another great book in the Lady Camille Divine series.
Set in 1920s England, the story brings us quite a different world in some ways, yet very much like today's world with its crime and mayhem.
I love the pacing of these stories and the relationships between the characters. Lady Camille is adjusting quite well to being (almost) divorced from her husband, Lord Harry Divine. She and her staff have formed a little family and often work with Chief Inspector Owen to solve murders.
This book doesn't disappoint. Lady Camille and her intrepid lady's maid/friend, Cecily, are caught up in the latest murder, one that occurred while Camille and Chief Inspector Owen (Richard) were dining at the Cafe Bon Bon.
With a few surprises thrown in, this one is a real puzzle. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2025This is a very well thought out period mystery. There are several phrases which aren't accurate in the story. That said it still carries the reader's interest. I have read most of the books in this series and have enjoyed them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024I loved it. The storyline is so easy to follow. I love how they all are so close an protective of one another.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024I have enjoyed the adventures of Camille, Cecily, Richard, and the other supporting characters. This time the plot takes us to a music, dance, and eatery club and the murder of the "moon" girl who played a part of the ambience of the club. The premise is finding out who murdered her and why. Lots of unexpected twists and turns to the story and I never would have expected who the murderer turned out to be. I most definitely recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023All the Camilla Divine stories have been fulfilling, but I find this one especially so.
“Murder at the Cafe Bonbon” centers around the theme of family, and friends as a family, and asks the question how far will each character go to maintain and strengthen family ties.
The families in question are on both sides of the “ledger,” the families of Camilla, Richard, and the characters they must investigate for wrongdoing.
I hesitate to write any more, as I don’t want to be seen as putting “spoilers” in a review, but I applaud the complicated nature of the plot, the theme of family that runs throughout, and the important character “threads” are revealed and resolved.
I hope you will enjoy the works as much as I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023The first book in this series was a bit annoying. The author kept repeating details, as if we the readers could not remember, but the following books have been much more enjoyable, combining decent plots with clothing details true to the era. I would like more details about decor and customs. Period I do fear that some of the customs of that era have not been honored in that men and women were not allowed to be alone in the early 20s although that was changing. I do appreciate the minimum of errors of grammar, spelling, and syntax that these books have. Kindle unlimited is notorious for bad editing, and these books have the best that I’ve come across.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2023The family you are born into can sometimes be the worst people in your life! Family has little to do with biology.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2023The author comes up with clever period details that helps to recreate the era.I have enjoyed each of her books and look forward to the next one.
