- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023Mysteriously, some kids have gone missing over the last few months. Suddenly, when a few friends venture into the woods, all but one are viciously killed, and the one that survives is traumatized. There's something out there that only the children are able to see, and it is brutally killing them! Luckily, a new stranger shows up in town, and she's a badass who is there to help. Too bad the adults don't understand. They only get in her way. However, she needs to move quickly before it’s too late, and she is on it!
I loved this graphic novel. The plot packed a punch and kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. The artwork was descriptive to the story, and I loved the focused looks in the eyes of the characters.
I am looking forward to continuing to read more in this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2022Something is killing they children may not be the most beautiful comic book I’ve seen, but the plot was pretty great and I loved that our main had her clothes on. The way the writers depicted the reactions of the townspeople was also pretty good; they’re angry and grieving, drinking to excess and falling apart. Some are attempting to regain control by lashing out at the one child who survived and the new woman in town. Erica also makes a great main because while she’s angry at the person she’s working with (who we never really see), she doesn’t get mad at the people around her in the town; she’s seen these reactions before and is used to dealing with them. She apologises to the boy when she snaps because she recognises how messed up all of this is for him and is gentler than expected. She’s a great contrast to a lot of heroes we see who demolish things in their way and act injured when no one loves them.
Something Is Killing the Children is part of a four part series of the same name. The writer for the series is James Tynion (which autocorrect changed to Tyrion for a minute), with Werther Dell’Edera as the illustrator and Miquel Muerto as the colourist. While normally this e-comic is available in paperback for $13.49, it’s also part of my comiXology subscription which means I read it for free (the subscription is like $5.99 a month), but otherwise the e-comic is $6.99. I mention this because I’m doing my best to keep track of all my subscriptions to see if they add value to my life. ComiXology always does!
I’ve also borrowed the next part Something is Killing the Children Vol. 2 so you’ll see that review up soon!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2022This is a great comic by industry vet James Tynion. The world he builds is compelling, the story is snappy and the art is fantastic and very fitting of the grim world these characters live in. This volume gives you just enough tidbits about the characters to pique your interest and leave you wanting more.
A few things to be aware of. First is that this book is very violent. It depicts the deaths of said children on paper in detail. Avoid this if that is something you have an issue with or are planning on buying this for a younger reader. Second, there are a few points where the panel layout is kind of confusing. Its not the biggest deal, but there were a few moments I accidentally read ahead because the panel continued onto the next page.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024This comic was pretty good, the atmosphere was great and the art was nice. I just feel a little meh about the story. I am putting it down to this being the set up for a more in depth storyline. The first and last chapters were better by far than the others and especially the final few pages were quite impactful, so I am definitely interested in delving further into this universe. Thus far it's a 3.5/5 stars 🌟 rounded up to 4 stars for goodreads and amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2023I like it's one of those stories that doesn't give you the answer to whats going on right away or even if the characters you've been introduced to are good, bad. What is this group(you'll see what I mean toward the end) I enjoy the aspect too of children because they are more inclined to believe in things adults say are fake, so I hope volume 2 builds on the nice starting point, story, characters and why this, why that? And I hope it unfolds in an entertaining way because the base they've laid in vol 1 has me very interested and happy I started this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2022Terrific graphic novel with a creepy story line. Its title is exactly what it is about... something is killing the children and no one knows who or what it is. When Erica Slaughter enters town, some think she might be the culprit but little do they know that she is there to make things right. With the help of one of the town kids and a talking stuffed octopus, she ventures out to find the monstrosity that is wreaking havoc.
I really enjoyed this book. There were a few frames on the art that I couldn't really picture what was going on but other than that, it was awesome!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2022Something Is Killing the Children, by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera (Boom Studios)
Something Is Killing the Children hits hard and was very well received by both critics and fans. In 2020 the series was nominated for the Eisner, Harvey, and Ringo awards. The following year, James Tynion IV would win both the Eisner and Ringo awards for “Best Writer” for his body of work in 2021. Now once again, both the series and the writer are up for 2022 awards.
I tend to shy away from horror comics but a friend introduced me to this book and I absolutely loved it. A brief summation is “a mash-up of Buffy meets Stranger Things”. The art, story, characters, and feel are all superb. I found I tend to really enjoy Tynion’s non-superhero based stories (The Department of Truth and The Nice House on the Lake). I didn’t care much for his Batman run. However, I can not praise this book enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2022This series is very good. Great characters and well paced story. The individual comics early in this series are a bit high in price. This graphic is a great way to read the story and it also includes the variant covers of the Individual cover art in the back of the book. The price point for this item is on point as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery in their comic stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters
Volume one in a series of paperbacks which collect issues of the comic 'Something is Killing the Children.' A horror comic. Which does feature graphic violence and gore so is only for grown up readers.
This volume contains issues one to five of the comic.
In a typical American small town, children are going missing. One other child claims to have seen monsters. Then a strange lady arrives in town. She believes the story about monsters....
I don't want to say more than that because this is worth discovering without any spoilers.
Issues one to five are divided up by chapter pages.
This does take a very short while to settle down. Thanks to some non linear storytelling at the start. But once you get a grip on the narrative structure, and it will come quickly, this comic had me totally. It blew me away. It is amazingly good.
It does everything at just the right pace, with the right amount of reveals. Especially in terms of what you get to know about the mysterious woman. Her interaction with the boy who saw monsters is really well handled. He is a totally three dimensional character. The other locals are also all very solid creations.
This moves at a superb pace, so it really keeps you hooked. Revealing just enough plot info for know. Action scenes do have a lot of jeopardy. As they should, so you don't think anyone is invincible.
The volume ends on a cliffhanger that will make you desperate to see what happens next. Heck, the whole book will make you feel that way anyhow. It's such gripping stuff.
The art is slightly stylised and could be an acquired taste. But i think it suits the story fine. The colouring complimenting it superbly also.
This is a fabulous start to this series. I can't recommend it highly enough. I can't wait to get book two.
There's a gallery of covers from individual issues at the back. And a short preview of another comic from the same writer also.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 von 10 Punkten
Fazit:
"Something is Killing the Children" ist ein absolutes Muss für alle Fans von Horror-Comics, die nach einer frischen und originellen Geschichte suchen. Tynion IV und Dell'Edera haben mit diesem Comic ein Meisterwerk geschaffen, das lange nachhallt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran edición,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story!
I got into collecting comic books after this series had been released. At that time, it was THE hottest indie comic title (it still is in some circles) and so the first issues were well out of my price range. Volume 1 collects the first five issues into one easily consumable book, and believe me, you will read this cover to cover in no time! This volume is just the right size to be read in bed, the covers are of a nice heavy-weight card stock, and the pages are of high quality and full of detail.
This series is not for the light of heart (and NOT for kids!) as there are some very difficult issues being dealt with, along with a hefty addition of death, dismemberment, and gore. However, if you didn't suspect that from the series title, I don't know what to tell you.
If you are looking for a great story that is currently ongoing and has also been picked to be developed for TV, look no further than Something is Killing the Children.
