Crossing the Line: A Sinner and Saint Novel, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 out of 5 stars 10,193 ratings

“What I feel for you? It’s not healthy. It’s an obsession.”

From the author of the number one Amazon best-seller Pretend You’re Mine, Lucy Score once again delivers an unforgettable, suspenseful love story with the first novel in the Sinner and Saint duet.

Rule-bound Xavier Saint has seen it all, from the battlefield to the behind-the-scenes business of protecting Hollywood’s elite. His private security firm is the best in the country, but he’s sick of protecting vapid starlets from themselves. Which is exactly what he thinks he’s getting into with Waverly Sinner, a second-screen goddess. But she’s not just another celebrity on self-destruct.

Waverly Sinner has everything she never wanted. Parts she doesn’t want to play, dangerously manipulative parents, and a public life devoid of any kind of privacy. She hides the panic attacks and the pain behind a movie-star smile and plots her escape from the life she never chose. Until the sinfully sexy Xavier shows up to slam the door shut on her own private prison. While sparks fly and their battle of wills heats up, a new threat materializes. Someone has been watching her, worshiping her, for years, and he’s about to make his very public, very deadly move. Can Xavier stand between her and danger, or will his feelings for Waverly dull his instincts and endanger them both?

Wow,,, what a ride this one turned out to be! It takes Lucy Score’s mastery of excellence in wordsmith ingenuity to a whole new level. I delight in her zany romance books and enjoy the giggles her words evoke,,,,but this steamy thriller kept me turning pages late into the night right up the last frustrating sentence that revealed this tale will require another book to be finished! Why it took me this long to read this book, I’ll never know.

Waverly and Xavier are combustible as they navigate their dynamic. Their chemistry just oozed all over.

Also, the way Xavier made the whole tragedy of Waverley’s attack all about him was so cringey to read, what a pathetic response, ew ew ew.

20 year old actress Waverly Sinner has a stalker. Her parents - also famous and wealthy actors - have hired Invictus Security to keep her safe through a couple of premiers and events touting her upcoming film release.

Former Army Intelligence Xavier Saint is partners with his friend Micah in Invictus, and he's the one who is assigned to keep an eye on Waverly. He assumes (at first) that she's just another vapid celebrity. But he quickly learns that she has hopes, plans, and dreams of a normal future where she can go to college and live in a house of her own.

She runs, and he finds her. He denies his attraction, then surrenders to it, and then decides for the both of them that they can't happen. All the while, trying to provoke her stalker into making himself visible, and hoping he can keep her safe.

I am not always a fan of 2 or 3 part stories with the same main characters, because I'm always jonesing for that happily ever after. But this 2 book series is the exception to my rule. I can't wait to re-read Breaking The Rules, book 2 in the Sinner & Saint duet.

Ok… I want to start off saying I liked the second book of this duet way better than this one -and it saved this story IMO. SPOILERS AHEAD…..

I loved Waverly. I usually don’t like rich starlet heroines, but Waverly was grounded and selfless along with being witty and funny. The chemistry between her and Xavier was simply amazing and I loved them together. The banter between them (even before they got together) was fantastic and so well done. When they finally have sex, it was emotional and intense—just what I love. But then for the next 100 pages or so, it seemed like nothing happened between them and it really started to annoy me. That part of the book dragged.

What also bothered me was that Xavier had one foot out the door this entire book. His internal thoughts were always reasons why he and Waverly could never be together—even though he was falling madly in love with her—and you could feel that. So in the end, after he saves her from her stalker (although he blame’s himself), he declares his love for her and that he’s never leaving her. But days later…… he destroys her. Not only does he decide to walk away from her, but he tells her she’s damaged and toxic and she will end up damaging “him”. Welp….. I hated him at this point. Because she is the farthest thing from that. She deserved so much better. And I wanted him to forever suffer for what he said. The books ends here and the next book takes place 5 years later. —I liked that book way better because I needed Xavier to prove himself to Waverly, and I really think he does.

I discovered Lucy Score by chance last year and have been a fan ever since. I love her style of writing and have loved and devoured all of her books. That being said Crossing the Line still managed to exceed all of my expectations.

I will start by saying: Holy cliffhanger, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Crossing the Line tells the story of Waverly Sinner, a reluctant movie star, and Xavier Saint, the oh-so-hot bodyguard hired to protect her. Waverly is no ordinary actress, she is Hollywood royalty, born to megastar parents. She never asked for fame and fortune and longs for an ordinary life, yet feels pressured to fulfill her parents expectations. Waverly decides to take command of her life and plans to escape Hollywood and fulfill her own dream of attending university. She is unpleasantly surprised when she learns her parents have hired a personal bodyguard, Xavier Saint, to protect her from a creepy stalker that is becoming more threating by the minute.

Waverly's plan of escape does not include a personal babysitter, hot as he may be, and is determined to lose him by playing up the spoiled rich girl act. Xavier Saint, however, is no ordinary bodyguard and is not easily scared off. He has dealt with his fair share of entitled rich clients in need of saving and is determined to protect Waverly at all costs. Determined as they both are to gain the upper hand, neither anticipated the undeniable and explosive attraction between them.

As Waverly's stalker becomes bolder and more threatening, Xavier refuses to allow his growing attraction to get in the way of his professionalism and his commitment to keep Waverly safe. Meanwhile Waverly is fighting her own feelings because due to her personal insecurities stemming from her parents' highly dysfunctional relationship. However, they are fighting a losing battle and soon find themselves giving in to a passionate affair.

Though they are both obviously in love with one another they are too stubborn to admit it and neither allows themselves to envision a future in which they can be together. With emotions running high and the tension building as the stalker draws closer, it all come to a head when a devastating argument leads to both making terrible choices that result in Waverly being placed in incredible danger. Will Xavier be able to save her and confess his love for her before it's too late? You'll have to read to find out.

Crossing the Line ends in a bit of cliffhanger; not the actual story being told within this novel (that ends) but as far as Waverly and Xavier are concerned, their story is far from finished. I have full confidence that Lucy Score will mend my broken heart and give me a hell of a read in the process, I simply cannot wait for Breaking the Rules, book two in the Sinner and Saint series.

Just when you think you know how an author writes, along comes a book which surprises. This book is utterly fantastic. This is fast paced, suspenseful, engaging and hot, hot, hot. As with other books by Lucy Score, I loved the main female character. Waverley is amazing. She is a young woman with an old soul. She is less a movie star more a girl becoming a woman. She is trying to navigate an independent path through a minefield of obligation and expectation. Into the mix comes her new temporary bodyguard Xavier. He is sexy and intense. He takes his job very seriously but is knocked sideways by his feelings for Waverley. When they get together, phew, scorching. I love them as a couple. Which is why I screamed when I realised this book ends on a cliffhanger! Thankfully I only have to wait a month or I may go crazy with the feelings.

I also really bought into the suspense element of the story. I was afraid on behalf of Waverley and willing Xavier to neutralise the danger.
Where we eventually find our heroes remains to be seen. But I trust the author to continue to deliver a fabulous, engaging story. It is less gentle than the Blue moon series by the author. However, as always you wish the women were your friends and the men actually existed. Believe me, this'll be the easiest 1-click purchase you'll make. 😉
