Called to Vancouver Island: Grace struggles to gain acceptance & enrich people's lives where she is neither wanted nor needed (Colville Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 74 ratings

Grace Williams, a young English missionary, arrives in Colville, Vancouver, in 1857 to find
the community neither wants nor seems to need her. When her superior, Reverend Palmer,
disappears into the snowy woods, on a foolhardy mission to seek converts amongst the Salish
First Nations people, Grace is left behind to oversee their mission. There are no half-
measures in this place where they do things differently, and she is forced to find self-confidence
and rise to the challenge.

Grace is grateful to Sam Gray, a widower, and Long Ben Sloane, the sawmill manager, who
befriend and aid her in her mission to improve people’s lives and find acceptance. In this wild
outpost, the two men become an invaluable support, but only one will win her heart…

As far back as I can remember I've wanted to write. I've always jotted down ideas I thought would make good stories and noted interesting phrases and comments picked up through eavesdropping. I love wide-lined notebooks, especially if I can fill them with dialogue and descriptions and I have a drawer full going back years. I had a false start in my late 30s when I realised I didn't know enough about life to write the sort of book I wanted to write. In 2021 I published "New Beginnings on Vancouver Island" adding "Called to Vancouver Island" to make the Colville series. I then began the Shackleton saga with "The Shackletons of Whitehaven", "The Shackletons of Coates Lane", and "The Shackletons of Chapel St". I'm currently working on book four.

This adventure/social story moves at a nicely flowing pace that kept me interested in what would happen next. The history of the time sent me back to doing some research on the various aspects of the people and region I wasn’t aware of.

As a non-religious person, I had some early trepidation about the subject of being “Called by God” to remote missionary work among First Nations people. However, the author handled it beautifully and made our heroine a person wanting to help her community (as opposed to converting them) while also pointing out the folly of the Reverend she had to work with who tried to convert the natives to Christianity.

I very much enjoyed catching up with the characters from the author's first book 'New Beginnings on Vancouver Island'. From the first chapter I became totally engaged in the story and the people (especially Grace and her challenging missionary 'boss'). I learnt a lot about the history at that time and congratulate the author on crafting such engaging and believable characters.

This was a wonderful story, expertly told. The historical detail was meticulous, but never interrupted the flow of the story. I warmed to all the characters and was rooting for them throughout. All in all this is an exceptionally well written book that I highly recommend! 5 stars!!
