From the Author
In the first couple of years after I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer, I didn't know what to do with all my emotions and feelings. Crying helped for a while but there seemed to be no end to the tears, and no real benefit to my healing. I started writing and journaling instead and tried writing a memoir about my experience. It was hard to recall a lot of the events and experiences and I wish I had recorded them down during that time. However, instead of giving up, I turned the memoir into a fictional children's book called Can You Hear Me, Daddy? Writing the story was such a therapeutic experience, which allowed me to express my emotions in a healthy manner. I wrote conversations I wish I could've had with my dad. Writing was my outlet and a form of communication with him after his death. I've never stopped talking to him since. It allowed me to use my creativity as well, imagining what we would talk about and what we could do together - even things we would never do in real life.
I had always dreamed about becoming an author and publishing my own book, but it wasn't until I experienced this great loss and grief that it unlocked something inside of me. I finally realized that my grief was a gift and I was able to use it to create something special and meaningful. Now whenever the tears come, they are no longer just full of pain or regret, but I also feel a sense of joy and hope, and think of creative ways I can express myself.
Grief is different for everyone, and you may experience a lot of mixed emotions. Don't suppress any of them when they come. Let them out and embrace them. Use them to create something special and long-lasting. This is why I created this journal. The world needs our stories and our masterpieces. Think about how many lives you can affect and impact with your creative work. It can be in all forms, from paintings, movies, songs, poems, photography, etc. The possibilities are endless! The ideas and prompts in this journal are just to get you started and help you unlock your creativity. Grief can lead to some of the most beautiful and impactful masterpieces in the world. It may feel like your loss is unbearable and your life will never be the same again, but I encourage you to explore your creativity and uncover your hidden talents with the help of this journal. Share your unique experience and new perspective with the world. Your grief is a gift and can become your superpower!

Becomes part of us.” Helen Keller
After suffering the loss of a dear friend, a time when not much felt helpful, receiving this guided journal turned out beneficial. Note about myself: I have journaled for decades yet never used a guided format.
I looked forward to using sections of this well-organized journal. I used it every day. On difficult days, I sat with it to examine my attitudes and daily moods.
Beyond my grief work, I see this journal as a helpful workbook for families and teenagers.
The author, Y. Y Chan, included a Memory Box project and a Gratitude Jar. The last project works well if parents want to help their children write notes to include. Notes can be pasted or taped into the pages.
As a family, we’ve used a gratitude jar to appreciate and praise each other. We also enjoyed how delighted each of us felt when a family member praised us. No need to be grieving to use either project. You can make a Memory Box for younger children to recall an aunt or grandparent who lives in another city, state, or country.
What helped?
• Self-care Check List (16 ways to take care of yourself)
• About My Loved One
• Mood Tracker
• Some of the quotations on grief and loss were helpful to me.
• Letters plus the Hopes and Dreams section
Least helpful for me?
• Coloring Pages
What this journal does not do. It does not provide grief counseling, which you may want or need. Also, the author notes that this book is not a medical treatment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2023My dad has been battling cancer since 2017 and passed away December 24, 2022. This beautiful journal has been an amazing tool to help me get my feelings out creatively. There is a calendar to track your mood for that day. I’ve color coded the faces and then color the day in the calendar with my mood. Everyday I randomly open the journal and whichever page it lands on is what I’m doing that day. I feel like when I do it this way, that is the page I NEED for that day. The questions and creative prompts are and have been helpful to my grieving process. Some days I’m coloring the pages, others I’m listening to songs, and then some prompts such as, “writing a letter to your loved one, telling them about your struggles and challenges since they’ve been gone.” Or the blank writing pages I have the opportunity to write about whatever I want. Everyone’s grieving process is different but the one thing I know, you can not keep your feelings in. Even if you don’t want to talk to someone about it, this journal will help you release your thoughts.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2022Y Y Chan has created an attractive book to use as a journal. The pages guide your thoughts so memories are triggered and forgotten times are remembered. I use this book to remember both of my late husbands, both gone too soon. They had many qualities in common, which I hadn't fully understood until I did some of the exercises in this book. I will continue to do more journaling as I work through the emotions the book prompts. Both have been gone for years now and the rawness has subsided. I'm ready for this approach to record the memories. Thank you Y Y for creating this thought-provoking and well-organized book to capture things that may have been forgotten otherwise. I'm enjoying the process and will treasure this book as well as all it holds.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2025This journal provides a kind and compassionate space for exploring grief through writing and creative prompts. It’s well-suited for those new to journaling or looking for a gentle starting point. However, the content may feel a bit basic for those seeking deeper emotional exploration. A helpful but modest companion on the healing path.

You can tell it was thoughtfully put together. A very helpful journal while going through a difficult time.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2022I bought this stunning journal for a friend who recently lost a loved one. I saw how difficult of a time she was having dealing with her grief. As much as I try to be there for her, I feel helpless. I suggested she journal her feelings, but she isn’t much of a journaler. I stumbled upon this journal that has creative writing prompts, creative activities and exercises, all tied to artistically expressing yourself and channeling one’s grief to create heartfelt artistic expression. This journal is very well thought out and designed. I skimmed though it to make sure it was appropriate for my friend and found it to be empowering and eye opening for me. It reminded me to to cherish my loved ones. This is a wonderful resource to aid in coping with grief.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2022I bought this journal for my wife, who recently lost a good friend to cancer. She said it's a beautiful journal, and she looks forward to reminiscing and filling it out. She also wants to buy another one for our daughter (for her anxiety). This book is filled with so much more than just pretty lines to write on. The self-care tips alone are very helpful and great reminders to take care of ourselves, especially in times of grief.
Note: this journal would also work with anxiety sufferers and those who suffer from generalized depression as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing gift to yourself or your close ones
Grief, like every emotion, is an energy and what we do with it, is entirely up to us. Obviously, there is time to wrap yourself in a blanket and cry. But there is also a time when we have to face life again. And this book can help to convert and process grief in a very creative way!
Authors' ideas are unique, from writing letters to your close ones to colouring pages for Mindful Processing.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who experienced grief. It's also perfect as a present. Very often I feel so helpless in the face of death. And now I can help. I can give my friends and family this journal!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful journal to explore your grief and heal!
We each express the grief caused by the loss of our loved ones in different ways. However, most people find it easiest to sit down and put their feelings on paper. A grief journal is indeed the creative way to grieve, as this wonderful author so cleverly suggests.
Grief is a complicated matter. It is often hard to process and even harder to explain it to others. Nonetheless, as any therapist will explain, it is not healthy to let your pain hidden inside. No matter how difficult it might be, we must let it out to light and find the strength to continue with our healing journey. I felt so emotional to see this grief journal and I found a lot of comfort between its pages.
If you haven’t used a grief journal before, do not be afraid. Do not put too much pressure on yourself and just let your heart guide you in the right direction. The journal begins with tips on how to use it, so you already have a helping hand right by your side. I absolutely loved the self-care tips included; if you feel lost, these might help you get back on the right track. It seems the author has thought of everything, guiding you to pay attention to what matters, such as your mood. The quotes sprinkled throughout the book add to the beauty of this journal, their words of wisdom emotional and inspiring at the same time.
Between the pages of the journal, you will have the opportunity to remember your loved ones and fond memories. You will be reminded of the things you should be grateful for, with a gratitude jar to use exactly to this purpose. Down the memory lane, you will re-live happy times, smiling without any effort. The memory box is a special addition to the journal, with the author offering plenty of useful suggestions on how to create one. You can write letters to those you’ve lost, explore your own feelings, and even draw to release the emotional tension… this journal truly has it all!
What a precious gift to have! The grief journal is beautiful, and it has helped me explore my feelings related to the passing of my father. It is easy to fill in and it helps those who are grieving to heal. Be sure to check out the dedication at the back, as the author has dedicated her grief journal to an author friend, who has sadly passed. Her beautiful words will help anyone dealing with grief, as the rest of the journal. I also encourage you to check out her other books, she is an amazing writer!
