Cake A Love Story (The Cake Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
2018 Audie Award Finalist in Romance
It's easy to overlook what someone doesn't want you to see.
“A once in a life time love.” – Dominic C
A reclusive rock star going through the motions
Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.
A vivacious college student embracing life
When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.
Their worlds are about to collide
Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?
“Everything you could want in a book! Thoughtful, moving, funny, emotional.” Amazon Review
"This went way beyond a rock star romance, and it's one of those special love stories I'll remember for a long time. It had layers of fun and sexiness along with true depths of emotion." - Shadowswept
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Cake is a love story at heart but does deal with a sensitive topic and may not be suitable for all.

Review
Wow, this book was really, really good. What's even more surprising about that is that this is this author's first book. Again, I say...WOW!
Jake McKallister is a rock star....one of the biggest in the world, but that's not all he's famous for. No, he's also famous for being a kidnapping victim of a serial killer when he was only 13 yo. He killed his kidnapper to escape...after 36 torture-filled, horrific days. The scars are still there...both physical and mental, but he's learned to bury them deep over the years.
Casey is a normal girl. She's about to go into her senior year studying accounting at Arizona State University. She's in a bridal party for her best friend, Kate...and Kate just happens to be marrying Jake's brother. So Casey gets paired up with Jake for the wedding party.
While every other girl involved is trying to seduce Jake, Casey knows he's WAY out of her league, so she simply gives him a hard time rather than trying to make him hard. He doesn't know what to do with her...no girl approaches him that way, so obviously, he's intrigued and that's enough for the two of them to realize that there's something real between them...including red-hot chemistry.
I liked this book just for the chemistry between Jake and Casey. She's a normal girl and is the first girl to make Jake feel like a normal guy...there's something amazing about that. There's a lot of baggage to Jake that could keep them from having a successful relationship. I love that the author didn't contrive issues between them though. Although I will tell you that I absolutely cried through the end of the book.
This book is like a twist on Cinderella. Casey is the normal girl who's suddenly swept up by the famous prince and completely swept off her feet...but there is still an awful evil queen out there in the form of the ghost of Ray...Jake's kidnapper...although he's dead, he's still very much a presence in Jake's life.
You may not have heard of this book, but that's simply because it's the author's first. It's tearing up the New Adult charts simply because it is such an excellent read. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, or new adult romance, or rock star romance tropes...it hits them all and it's amazing for all of them.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018I'm not really sure how I found this book... it might have been recommended to me specifically by a trusted #BookBestie or I found it on my own... we will never know... ;) all I can say for sure is that I listened to the audiobook of it, as a part of my Audible Romance Package :) and let's just say... once I finished it, I immediately bought the ebook versions... of all four books available currently in this series :) so yeah... it was that good :) let me tell you a bit more about our main couple so then I can get into all the reasons why you should read it :)
What can I tell you about Jake and Casey... Casey is finishing her junior year of college when she meets Jake at a wedding... his half-brother is marrying one of her best friends... :) he's a groomsman, she's a bridesmaid and they get paired off :) what starts as a sort of innocent flirt turns into something more pretty quickly... especially when Casey keeps surprising him by how actually normal she treats him :) which would make much more sense if I would explain that he's a world famous musician and people usually freak out around him... ;) I really liked her as the heroine... she was... *sighs happily* she was actually very likable and smart :) I loved her weird sense of humor almost as much as Jake did ;) and speaking of Jake... ;) he's young but very mature for his age... he keeps himself at a distance but for very good reasons... not everyone endured as much as he did, but that is all I'm gonna say about it... some parts of that explanation appear early on in the story, but the majority of the details we get much later, and I don't want to spoil you anything... just be patient and let the story unravel... what I will add is that I really loved both main characters... even though they are young, they both act like adults, which is very refreshing... ;) there's no worse thing for me in books when adults act like hormonal and moody teenagers ;)
I don't remember how I found this book, but I do remember why I picked this particular story up when I did... I was in a mood for a rock star romance :) I'm a mood reader, and I skip between genres all the time, and that day I just needed that kind of a story :) what is even better, it's not your usual rock star romance... I was very tensed when I was finishing it... mainly because for the last 30-35% I was waiting for the usual conflict situation to happen, which usually involves some sort of misscomunication, stupid decision and / or unnecessary angst... and it just never happened :) you have no idea how happy that made me :) I love books that don't have unnecessary drama... you don't need that sort of situations to tell a compelling story... this gem is the best example :) are there troubles and problems? yes, but they deal with them in a mature way... most of the times :) also, for a debut novel, I absolutely adored the writing style :) the author created such great characters, that even though the story was long... the actual book takes place over the span of about a year actually :) it reads very quickly :) since I listened to the audiobook version, I can definitely recommend it as well, both narrators did a wonderful job :) so whatever is your prefered way of reading books, definitely add this gem to your list, because it's a story worth reading :) it will steal your heart and leave you with a smile on your face... even though there are definitely some more serious topics in it as well... but all of them are treated with respect... all in all, it's a 5 stars novel for me and I hope my review will convince at least some of you to give this book, and this series a try :) I personally can't wait to dive back into it, and read about Jake's siblings... especially since in book #4 (already out) we go back to Jake and Casey ;) *squeels with excitement* ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024Both narrators did a great job! A good listen!
Really love the connection between Jake and Casey! So sweet! They have some fun banter; some of it was a bit too far into bro humor, but liked how lighthearted they are with each other. I’m not huge on musician romances; hate the groupie thing, but this one was a good one. Jake definitely wasn’t an angel and partook in the whole groupie thing; so gross! But, I still loved how touching the dynamic between Casey and Jake was. Jake went through a crazy trauma when he was younger and it has really affected him, so he has some walls up. Some really triggering things, so a bit of warning on that. Not really much detail on it, but still could be triggering. Casey comes along and Jake falls quickly. Casey falls fast too, but these two have some difficulties to get through before there can be a true sense of happiness. Like that we get dual POV. Enjoyed the wedding meeting for Jake and Casey, and that they both put in effort to continue being present in each other’s lives. Jake being a rock star type is a problem for the couple; as well as, Jake’s trauma from the past. Casey is a likable female lead, and Jake is likable as well. There’s some good spice too. The story does drag on at times; definitely didn’t need the stuff with Casey’s old high school enemy, or the stuff with the young fan and her mom at Jake’s concert, but overall, I liked the story. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the next books despite really liking this one; none of the side characters really called to me, so I don’t really care to read their books. Also, after reading the premises for the next books, they didn’t appeal to me, so I won’t be rushing to read them. Maybe if they are on a good sale. Overall, a really touching story!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025I enjoyed this book VERY MUCH! The story was so well-told, I loved Casey and Jake’s meet-cute at Jake’s brother’s and Casey’s friend’s wedding. It was dramatic and tense at times “listening” to the horror Jake suffered as a 13 year old. There wasn’t much drama between Cake (Casey and Jake, hence the book title, wink wink) so if you’re looking for that moment when the bottom falls out and they have to find their way back to each other, look elsewhere cause this ain’t that story. It was fantastic though! Loved Casey’s quirky sense of humor and the easy, fun-loving relationship they had. Beautiful story!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What happened after
This is a very interesting book, it's about what happened after they got together. It was very refreshing to read a romance where characters don't argue, don't break up and the woman is not insecure. The story still had enough conflict in it though.
I saw some reviews complained about action not being fast enough but this is the beauty of this story for me. Also the characters are really well developed and when I was reading about their internal struggles it was reminding me how I felt in similar situations and I sometimes felt like crying. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Swoon-Worthy Book EVER!!!
Loved, loved, loved this!!! “Cake” was probably THE most swoon-worthy book I have ever read! Like ever!!!
I don’t remember the last book that gave me this giddy, butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling. There were sooo many scenes that made me go “awwwh” and grin like a fool. It was just too sweet and cute and funny! OMG, was this book funny! The dialogue was hilarious! Casey cracked me up, she was hysterical! But Jake totally ran with it and gave back as good as he got. The banter between them was the best part of the book for me. It was perfect in showing their growing affection and chemistry. I kept thinking “Yes, that’s how I want couples to get to know each other”. I really wanted to give the author a high-five for not taking the usual approach of insta-lust that most NA books are based on nowadays but base their attraction on genuine liking.
In most romances the sexual tension is the most important factor around which the author centers the whole relationship. And don’t get me wrong, as long as I feel that the couple has something more in common than being compatible in bed I’m fine with that. But here it was so much more than chemistry with a little witty banter. They were talking, talking, talking. About things they liked or disliked, about their opinions on all kinds of stuff, about their life, about everything. And all in a teasing and affectionate manner that was just too cute! Because of all that talking they were getting to know each other pretty well in a relatively short amount of time. But their first two days together spanned so many chapters that their time together felt a lot longer. And thus I never got the impression that their relationship was rushed. Besides, I could totally see that these two were made for each other. I was never even for a moment wondering what each of them saw in the other. Often in these kind of stories I wonder why the famous hero falls in love with the heroine because I can’t see what makes her so special to stand out among the hundreds of women he’s met. This was so not the case here! From the get go I knew that these two were perfect together. They had the same kind of humor and they just clicked. It made perfect sense to me. I also loved both of their families, they were a riot! And surprisingly, the more serious parts of the story worked well with the overall humorous feel of the book.
If there is anything to criticize it would probably be the info dump that occurred a few times, but really only a few. Once or twice Jake or Casey would reminisce about their thoughts and feelings a little too long for my taste. A seasoned author would have probably incorporated those parts into the dialogues. But I know how hard it is to write good dialogue and have it flow naturally and at that the author excels!
So, overall I have no real complaints. The book gave me all the feels, made me swoon and laugh and really feel for the characters. J. Bengtsson will go on my auto-buy list and I can’t wait for her next book!
