Captured: An MM SciFi Alien Prince Romance (Star Marked Warriors Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,360 ratings

An alien prince, a threatened throne, and the human mate who can help him save it…

Lucas: Sure, my life isn’t going exactly according to plan—I have a degree that led nowhere, a crappy job as a closing-shift barista, and an ex who has everything I want and got it . . . by dumping my sorry ass—but that doesn’t mean I’m willing to give up on living yet! And holy crap, when I’m plucked off the sidewalk of my rural Colorado town on the very night of my ex’s wedding, I’m pretty damn sure I’m about to lose my life and a whole lot more.

If you’ve never tried flying, I do
not recommend the first time be when you’re drunk and alone at two in the morning. But there I was, dumped in a cage on a spacecraft, surrounded by barbarous, giant blue aliens. And the only thing that might keep me safe is there’s one huge, intimidating warrior who can’t keep his eyes off me.

Kaelum: I am the true-born son of the King Xyren the Imperator, but as a Thorzi-human hybrid, my path to the throne of Thorzan is far from clear. My father’s people are enormous and foreboding, their skin is the deep dark of twilight when our planet’s twin stars set. I am not. My enemies think I am small, soft, incapable, and they dog my every step.

If I am to take my rightful place, I must focus on saving my people. But my mother was born on a far-away blue planet called Earth. In my bones, I know the answer to my problems hides out there beyond the stars.

By popular cowriting duo Sam Burns & W.M. Fawkes, Captured is an M/M SciFi alien romance with a warrior prince, a resourceful human at the end of his rope, an intergalactic war that could keep them apart forever, and true love that’s entirely out of this world! This book is first in the Star Marked Warriors series, but each book can be read as standalone. This series does not contain mpreg.

Lucas is having a hard life atm. He's got a degree in history but doesn't want to teach high school kids so he works as a barista. His ex boyfriend is marrying the guy he cheated on Lucas with and the two of them have catnapped his kitty Donna Meowble. All of his co-workers were invited to the wedding so he had to close on his own until a drunk co-worker showed up to rub salt in the wounds by asking him for a ride home. Seconds into this story and I already love it. Lucas is of course kidnapped by aliens who want to make babies with him. Really big, blue skinned aliens. The story is a charmer, with enough action and romance to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering if a captive can ever truly give consent to the ones that keep him prisoner, and a young prince who searches for the way to make it possible. Trigger warnings for rape which does not happen on page, but is frequently brought up in this and subsequent volumes. Sweetness scale is tingly pineapple dipped in sugar, coated in sugar. Heat level is the bigger they are the hotter it burns. Recommended.

Lucas is stuck in a minimum wage job as a barista, because what use is a history degree. His boyfriend left him and is about to be married. And, he took their cat. Could his life get any worse? Somehow, “kidnapped by aliens” never even figured as a possible answer to that question. Only, these aliens are big, blue and very buff. And, one of them seems to have taken a liking to Lucas. Prince Kaelum is a hybrid, part human and part Thorzen. His people need humans to reproduce after they lost the ability to do it on their own, but many of them look down on humans and the hybrids as “weak” just because they're smaller. Kaelum doubts he will ever earn enough of their respect to become king.

In broad strokes, the plot of this book sounds a bit like a B-movie, or maybe high budget porn. Certainly, “kidnapped by sexy aliens” is a popular subject for books as well. There are a lot of parallels with another series I've read, The Harvest, where an alien species needed earth men to reproduce, but beyond that basic premise, these are two very different stories. As always, the devil is in the details. “Captured” introduces us to a new world, populated by new aliens with their own culture.

Lucas comes across as quite a relatable character. He's a nice guy but hasn't had the best luck in boyfriends, or much else in life. One of the hardest things to pull off in stories like this is the turnaround when the kidnapping victim overcomes their outrage at being taken against their will, and falls for their captor. We get to know Lucas and his thinking enough to make his evolving relationship with Kaelum entirely believable.

Kaelum and the culture he is a product of take some time to get to know, but he still comes across as an understandable person. In some respects, there's an element of a coming-of-age theme to the young warrior's story. The struggle of someone desperately trying to find their place in a world where they're seen as “weak” and inferior is certainly a classic theme of LGBTQ fiction. More than that, Kaelum is also a likeable character that you can root for on many levels.

First off, allow me to strongly aver that I am a Burns and Fawkes fan. A bigly fan. I gotta admit that I didn’t wanna like this book. I wanted a cute fox. Or a good Greek pantheon god. But this book is incredible. I loved the interplay between two alien worlds and their attendant protagonists. 15 pages I liked if. Half way in, I loved it. And, while there are no foxes, there are cats! Lemme tell about the cats! No, wait, find out for yourself little human. As for myself I’m just gonna wait longingly for book 2.

Epic adventure, great scenes and wonderful characters.

Lucas and his alien hybrid Kaelum are adorable together in this short book. The book features a lot of the usual tropes without much tension or suspense. However, there is a neat wrinkle to the alien-kidnapped trope that I appreciate, and it gives our guys weeks to get to know and appreciate each other. Initially, Lucas's inner monologue comes across whiny with a huge heaping of self-pity, but it improves somewhat, and he does grow more confident (yay). Kaelum has lots of family dynamics going one and his mother's life had surprisingly dark allusions to abuse if not outright rape. The fight scenes were pretty flat, and the final showdown really should've been better. Not enough here to interest me in the next book in this series, but I may try these authors' more recent work.

This is a great fated mates/fantasy/mm romance read. I loved the characters, the general unique plot idea and I thought the descriptions were thorough enough to understand the two separate beings. If I had any complaint though, I wish the relationship/romance had just a bit more time to show how deep their love could go. It seemed super rushed. Not in a bad way if you want a quick read—but not enough to where you can get super attached and fall in love with them yourself. Overall it was a fun journey.

Lucas is not having a good day! After working the late shift at a coffeehouse, his car not starting, a drunk coworker and the night of his ex's wedding to the guy he cheated with, he gets drunk himself. While walking home he is abducted by aliens!
Feeling less than, Prince Kaelum and his crew set off to search for the enemy in the space of their planet, Thorzan. They receive a distress call from the ship carrying Lucas. They swoop in and rescue the humans and Kaelum decides Lucas is his.
To say there is much to be learned about this planet and the inhabitants is an understatement! Lucas stays with Kaelum and they begin to connect but there are things even the palace is unaware of with how the humans are treated. Working together the two men try to make things better for the humans, right some wrongs, make the Thorzi see even a hybrid is strong and can be king. All while trying to build their own relationship. No pressure! Jump aboard and read this story that will have you happy, a little sad, angry and falling in love with an alien prince and his human.

5.0 out of 5 stars Choosing alien abduction
Reviewed in Canada on September 11, 2021
As always from this writing duo a promising start to a truly exciting new series!

All of those stories about abductions can't be wrong, right? After all, people disappear every year. And what if on the worst day of your life you actually wanted to disappear? Lucas is stuck in a job that isn't the career he went to school for, has lost all his friends, and his ex boyfriend just married an ex co-worker who got the job he always wanted. Lucas hates his life and what appears to be his future, but getting sucked up into a spaceship wasn't ever the plan. Soon he finds himself in a faraway planet that has both aliens and him and and gets claimed by the alien Prince Kaelum. The aliens needs humans to continue their race but the politics from the mixed race kids are causing some major upheaval and Lucas and his fellow abductees find themselves smack fab in the middle of it all.

Lucas is a really great lead because though his life was crappy and things seems to be going to hell, he isn't sitting back and just letting it happen. While an alien planet wasn't exactly something he imagined a new chance is just that, and Lucas is determined to make this second chance into something that could be a life. This means working with Kaelum, figuring out the new planet, and seeing what he can contribute. It also means bringing fresh eyes to an old problem of the politics going on. Lucas also won't settle until he gives his fellow humans just as good a second chance as him, whether that means them finding a home there or getting back to Earth.

Kaelum is himself a mixed race kid and it has been a very different upbringing. With the stories of Earth from his mother, the expectations of strength from his father, and the disappointment of his planet for the dilution of strong genes, he has fought to fit in but never found a place to do so. Kaelum hopes to find more belonging with the newest humans but is again on the outside with their mistrust and poor incoming to the planet. When Lucas reveals what happens when humans are taken from Earth and what conditions are like for abductees Kaelum seeks to fix a wrong that should have long ago been righted. In fighting for his new human friend he just might find what he has always been looking for.

The assortment of characters introduced is great as they are varied in ability, temperament, and humour. It isn't a group of defeatists, though they do go through some difficult things. Each human and Thorzi introduced brings something different to the table and promises some truly intriguing stories. Even as there is new hope, there are new challenges introduced, promising an exciting and engaging series to come!

This was a great start to the series. I loved that we got alternating POV so we could really get to know our characters well. I liked how they showed the Thorzi culture being very different to humans, and I enjoyed the alien world that was shown to us. I also liked seeing Kaelum and Lucas grow closer, and Lucas find his place/calling - something he struggled to do on Earth. I look forward to seeing where the series takes us.

I said it before but I’ll say it again, I love a hero with some weakness, makes him more relatable.
I also loved the writing itself, no discernible grammar or spelling errors. The author didn’t dumb down the writing, using large descriptive words correctly.
Everything ran smoothly… just a great read all around.

Left me smiling. Highly engaging tale of a sweet romance across galaxies. Nice spin on the alien kidnap theme. I liked the culture viewpoint that found more similarities instead of differences in the politics and peoples.
