Cash (Lucky River Ranch Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 16,380 ratings

Butting heads leads to knocking boots in this wildly sexy enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, small town cowboy romance by Jessica Peterson.

My dad and I have been estranged for years. But as his only living relative, it’s no surprise I inherit his massive cattle ranch when he dies. Something that is a surprise? The stipulation in his will, which requires me to live on the ranch and actively manage it for a year before I can access my inheritance money.

I haven’t stepped foot in Hartsville, Texas, population one thousand, since my parents split when I was six. Now a city girl through and through, I never imagined having to move back to cowboy country. But I need the money to invest in my company, and a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

There’s just one giant roadblock to my plan: the ranch’s foreman, grumpy cowboy Cash Rivers. I don’t care how good he looks in his Wranglers and chaps. He’s rude, he’s growly, and he wants me gone. I’d fire him in a heartbeat, but I need this cowboy to teach me the ropes of running a ranch.

We’re enemies from the get-go. But turns out, Cash is really good at this ranch thing. He’s got strong hands, an intelligent mind, and let’s just say everything really is bigger in Texas. Working alongside him leads to conversations beneath the stars. Throw in some cheek-to-cheek dancing at the local dive bar, and it all feels so right that I start to fall in love with life on the ranch. And maybe with him, too.

But my stay in Hartsville is only temporary. And you know what they say about cowboys: they may break horses, but they also break hearts. If only Cash hadn’t already lassoed mine…

CASH is the first standalone book in the brand new steamy, interconnected Lucky River Ranch Series!

Hot cowboy, enemies to lovers!

Hot cowboy, enemies to lovers!
A city girl named Mollie and a grumpy cowboy named Cash are forced together by the fates and the last will and testament of Mollie’s estranged and recently departed father. Mollie and Cash immediately hate each other, but quickly realize they may have judged one another a little too quickly. The banter and the things that come out of that cowboy’s mouth are *chef’s kiss*. I have a feeling I’ll love reading the other Rivers brother’s stories too.

I loved this book! Cash and Mollie became instant enemies when Mollie inherited her father’s ranch… the same ranch her father promised to his foreman, Cash. But to finalize the inheritance, Mollie was required to live on the ranch for one year.

I love city girl/small town boy romances and Mollie and Cash fit the bill! It was so fun to read about their stark differences at the beginning of the book.. Mollie in her Range Rover wearing girly clothing and Cash driving his old truck in his Wranglers. These two had GREAT banter and I loved seeing their walls slowly crumble as they spent more time together.

Grief and regret were a huge part of their story and the most emotional parts of this book were when Mollie and Cash bonded over the loss of Garrett, Mollie’s dad. It was heartbreaking and cathartic for both of them and helped them to see each other in a new light.

And when things heated up, boy did they get steamy!! Never have I loved the nickname honey so much 😍

This book had a great cast of characters and I loved learning the ranch with Mollie. As she made abundantly clear to Wheeler, there are four single Rivers boys, and I’m looking forward to each of them getting their HEA!

Okay friends, this was a very slow burn. I gave it 4ish stars because my ADHD got irritated by the ongoing “omg why am I so turned on by him/her” inner monologues by Cash and Mollie. 😩 That said, I LOVED this book!! This is a story about grief, understanding, and healing. Mollie was a strong and lovable FMC and in the end I felt delighted with the way their story unfolded. Cash definitely showed up in this one!! This is the ultimate example of “don’t be married to your story”. 😍

I'm finally digging into the series everyone is raving about - and Cash was a heck of a first book to kick things off.

📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Cash by Jessica Peterson

📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Lucky River Ranch character series. Book 1.

    📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Cowboy romance

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Fish out of water, enemies-to-lovers, banter, slow burn.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Mollie inherents her dad's ranch and is intent on selling it, until she visits and realizes it might just be the key to understanding her father - despite the rude and aloof foreman that comes along with the place.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I love cowboy romance. Put me on a fictional ranch (let me tell you, I couldn't survive a second in real life) and give me some cowboys to swoon over, and I am in. So I'm not really surprised I enjoyed this book.

Cash was a perfect introduction to Lucky River. Mollie had a lot to learn about the ranch and the value it brought to the people who worked it. And Cash needed someone who ruffled his feathers like Mollie does. It was great to watch them thaw to one another - and I did love that it wasn't without some obstacles. Though there wasn't a third-act breakup, there was some drama that kept me on my toes.

This book did exactly what I wanted it to do - it gave me a great love story, and it set up for some awesome storytelling in the future. I'm definitely continuing the journey.

First 50% was great - the scene when they first go dancing together and still hate each other was perfect. Wish the enemies part lasted a little longer but the tension was good and the spice was hot. The last half of the book was pretty boring tbh. Cash does a total 180 and is suddenly the perfect human male specimen which I find boring. There’s also something about this book where every tiny detail has been slightly overdramatized which I got tired of very quickly. Aubrey also flips her whole persona/lifelong vendetta in 20 minutes. I will probably give the series another chance though.

Tropes: Cowboy Romance, Grumpy/Sunshine, Enemies to Lovers, City Girl/Country Boy, Small Town Romance, Slow Burn
    Setting: Hartsville, Texas

Thoughts: This was the perfect cowboy romance with a grumpy cowboy who spent his entire life taking care of everyone and a city girl finding her way in the country. I loved the introduction to the Rivers brothers and the town of Hartsville. Mollie and Cash had some great banter in the beginning, as well as some misplaced anger. It was fun seeing the growth in their relationship and the growth they experienced individually.

It took awhile for me to like Mollie. She started out as a little bit of an entitled rich girl, but soon she was finding her way on her father’s ranch and grieving the fact that she never had a chance to fix her relationship with him. I loved how she fell in love with the ranch and Hartsville and really immersed herself in the ranch while she was there. She really showed Cash how wrong he was for his initial assumptions.

Cash was the ultimate cowboy. He loved his family. He loved his job. And he loved his ranch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take Me To Lucky River Ranch
Reviewed in Australia on April 24, 2025
Jessica, you have outdone yourself with this one!!

“You’re a cowgirl now, honey. And cowgirls can’t be tamed. Wouldn’t dare to try.”

This was my first book from Jessica Peterson—but definitely not my last. I already have Wyatt downloaded and ready to go back-to-back.

The scenes were described so beautifully—I wish I could experience Lucky River Ranch with my own eyes. (Also... I wouldn’t say no to a bit of cowboy eye candy, just putting that out there.)

The love brewing between Mollie and Cash was absolutely perfect. Cash had that brooding, quiet intensity, and the vulnerability underneath it made him even more compelling. Their first interaction had me hooked—I needed to know more, and I couldn’t put it down after that.

Even though this is a fictional story, I truly felt for Mollie and her complicated relationship with Garrett. I hated that she missed out on so much time with him, and that pain and regret was so raw every time she realized what she’d lost. That heartbreak was wrapped up in her past with her mom and dad, and it just hit hard. She’ll never get that time back—and I felt every second of it.

This book also gave such a real perspective on how much actual work goes into running a ranch. The River brothers don’t mess around—they work hard, every single day, and the love they pour into it shows. Whether it’s by blood or found family, their bond is strong. I especially loved the bits we got about Garrett, from both Mollie and Cash’s POVs—especially Cash’s. You could feel how much he struggled with not having a connection with his daughter, but also how deeply he loved those boys he took in, helping them through their grief and honouring the memory of their parents and the ranch they lost.

Mollie’s decisions near the end? Chef’s kiss. I’m obsessed with Cash—the way he wanted to prove himself, even knowing the uphill battle he was facing. That final idea and compromise he brought to the table? So smart, so thoughtful, so him. And the way they both got what they truly wanted in the end? Satisfying AF.

And can we please talk about the bath scene?! Whew. The tension, the tenderness, the steam. It wasn’t just hot —it was intimate in a way that felt earned and emotional. You could feel how safe and seen Mollie felt in that moment, and the way Cash handled it? Swoon. It was vulnerable, raw, and ridiculously hot. Jessica nailed that balance of sensual and sweet. I needed a fan.

If I could change one thing, I would’ve loved a bit more depth to the photos Garrett left behind. Maybe a note or something personal to tie it all together. But I did love the photo Cash chose to share—it was a quiet, powerful gesture.

Jessica, you had me in a chokehold with that ending. I literally had to go to bed and wait until the next day to start Wyatt—and I couldn’t stop thinking about it at work. That’s how you know it’s a good one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5 - If you’re looking for found family, enemies-to-lovers, small-town romance—with a broody cowboy, real emotional stakes, and a ranch that feels like home—you’re in the perfect place.

Cash is such a classic cowboy and this story made my small town heart happy. I loved their banter so much, they hated each other and it was just classic.

Mollie's character growth throughout the book was phenomenal and this whole book had me smiling from the beginning to end! The tension between these two was just *OOF* sooo good until it FINALLY snaps!

If you want to read about a broody cowboy who ends up down bad for the girl, then this is the book for you. SO GOOD

Narration: Stephen Dexter always just does a great job, his southern accent wasn't over the top and he did such a great job. Lila Winters was so well cast for Mollie's character. Such a great narration!

Cash definitely is one of my favorite enemies to lovers, opposites attract, cowboy x city girl romance books!
The world building is phenomenal! The author has a gift for describing places, characters, and feelings so vividly and for making readers feel connected to every single character of the story.
I loved Cash and Mollie's story so much!
I loved that the they have solid reasons for not liking each others at first. And I loved even more the way they are forced to face the worst thing that ever happened to them together, in order to be able to make their individual dreams come true and maybe discover a few new dreams they can share. Watching them discover all the reasons why they are perfect for each other truly was a pleasure!
Plus, the spicy scenes of this book are reaaaaaally good!
