Challenged by the Single Dad (The Single Dads of San Camanez: The Brew Brothers Book 4) Kindle Edition
Welcome to San Camanez, a humble, peaceful little island in the Puget Sound and home to the McEvoy brothers. Four sexy single fathers—and one childless snack with a beard—who run a brewpub on the beach, raise their kids together, and hope to find love and happiness in the chaos that is life. This is Dom’s story ...
Single Dad and bartender Dom McEvoy is a workaholic. Despite hardly seeing his kid, he doesn’t trust anybody else to run the restaurant. Not after what happened with his last hire. It’s just easier if he does it all himself. But when his brothers out-vote him and hire a new bartender—who is better than Dom at everything—his temper flares and he instantly wants her gone.
Chloe Voss knows she can’t keep running from the pain of her past. She’s been a nomad for too long. It’s time to set down some roots—even if they’re shallow. So when she gets the job offer at the McEvoy brothers’ restaurant, things finally look as if they’re falling into place. Too bad her boss hates her. Dom challenges her at every turn. He’s grumpy, unpredictable and cold. Whatever, it’s only a job.
Until it’s not.
Until these enemies turn into lovers and their unbridled attraction threatens to blow up the business.
When a winter storm ransacks the island, leaving Chloe abandoned and in danger, Dom will do whatever it takes to save her, even if that means putting his own life at risk.

About the author

A Canadian West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have two beautiful daughters and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when the kids are at school and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.

I could not wait to get my hands on this book. This series has been one of my factories and I’m thrilled I found my way to Whitley’s work. While these can be read as standalone, they do interlock with bits of references to the other brothers and their story. You might feel somewhat lost, but I believe they bring in enough details to summarize what’s happened. I do recommend starting with Rescued by the Single Dad as that’s book 1 on the series if you decide to go that route.
Book 4 of the Single Dads of San Camanez series, we find Dominic McVoy struggling to trust any new bartender he tries to hire after an incident resulting in an employee being murdered. Chloe Voss is trying to get a fresh start on the island after having spent time in the road trying to discover peace with a tragic loss she experienced back home. Things are serious rough between them, but the other McVoys feel Chloe is up for the job. But Dom is still mourning the loss of his wife, and while his brothers have managed to move on, he still doesn’t feel like it’s right to do so. He buried himself in his work but tries to stay connected to his only son, Silas. He’s very much devoted to his son but also struggles to let go control of the bar, even after Chloe becomes the talk of the island and shows she’s more than capable.
This was so emotional since both have experienced the deep loss and struggle to move past it. It’s one of those scenarios where you really can’t heal until you find someone else in the same situation. Like Dom and Chloe needed each other to find their way through this difficult time. Also the fact that they work together is another hurdle to deal with despite how they start growing more attracted to each other. Everything about this book, like the others, felt real and the emotions were so rich. This series did not disappoint. You have to check this book out for yourself.

I’ve enjoyed all the stories in this series and was eagerly awaiting the next story. The backstory of all the brother’s having lost their wives, all together, in one night is just so utterly heartbreaking but even more so with all the kids they left behind. The brothers have done an awesome and admirable job raising their little ones, and I have fallen in love with all the children. Silas is one of my favorites; I just love that quirky kiddo and his big growly dad, so I was stoked that Dom’s story was next.
I knew the author would have to bring someone special to break into this growly bear’s heart. Chloe was up to the challenge! I appreciate that his wasn’t a grumpy sunshine book because I don’t think it would have felt real for Dom. Chloe was also broken, and it made the book all the more compelling. Having lost her son four years ago, Chloe has been running from the pain ever since. She became a nomad just wandering through the world looking for somewhere to belong. Although instantly attracted to each other, Chloe and Dom try to resist the powerful pull between them but then without even realizing it, they fell in love.
My only real complaint with this story was the lack of relationship building, both between Dom and Chloe who went from “we can’t do this - let’s just be friends” to “you’re moving in with me and having my baby” in nanoseconds but more importantly, the lack of relationship building between Chloe and Silas. I adored the way the other ladies came in and really built a relationship with the kiddos in their houses. Sadly, this story lacked those special moments between the characters, and I missed it greatly. I did love the book and their special ending, especially the beautiful bonus epilogue!

"This is what healing actually looks like. See how it took time? We all have different sized wine glasses with different amounts of wine in them. And our faucets all flow at different speeds."
I didn't think this book would be therapy for me, but here we are. This series does such a beautiful job of showing how grief and "moving on" is different for everyone. I absolutely loved the wine and water metaphor used in this book.
"No god here. Just us."
Dom might be my new favorite McEvoy. He's grumpy, yet deeply caring. He struggles to be present as a father, navigate his grief, and balance his job, but he's doing his best to dedicate time to his son. After a bad experience with a former employee, the last thing he wants is a new bartender especially one that causes him to feel something he hasn't felt in a long time. Chloe comes into town trying to outrun her grief. She struggles to open up and be truly herself because she keeps her loss to herself. When the two of them recognize that they are navigating similar paths, Dom tears down his walls and Chloe realizes she can share her story. Once they finally give in to the spark between them, there's no stopping the wildfire. The intimate scenes between them are scorching. And dirty talking Dom? Omg, give me more.
"Don't you accept this challenge? To stay and love me no matter what? No more running." "Yes, I accept the challenge."
This book yet again proved why this series is one of my favorites. Whitley Cox has such an amazing way of writing stories that are full of humor, spice, & family, but that don't shy away from serious topics. I highly recommend this series. I cannot wait for Jagger's story in Hot for the Jerk, the first Single Mom's of San Camanez book.
"I guess sometimes you can't see the stars until you're in the dark. Thank you for being my North Star and guiding me home."
