4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 162 ratings

Never fall for the straight guy—Jasper knows better. At least until his straight guy crush starts crushing back…

Jasper Tanaka has made an art form out of avoiding commitment. Which is why his crush on a nearby café owner, Matt, has been perfect—the guy is straight, vanilla, and far too sweet—everything that puts him out of Jasper’s reach.

Matt Reed’s always been unlucky in love, never enough for his partners. And when his most recent girlfriend dumps him, he decides to take a chance on something new—a rope class. Lucky for him, Jasper’s there, and their time together sparks an attraction that both surprises and captivates Matt.

When a developer’s offer threatens to shut Tabletop Tavern down, Jasper’s grasping for any distraction possible—and Matt offers the perfect one. Except the intense feelings between become far too real, and if Matt decides this was just a curiosity, Jasper won’t survive the loss of the one guy he’s let in and the only home he’s ever known.

Roll the dice on romance at Tabletop Tavern…

Charisma Check is an M/M bi-awakening + friends to lovers romance that reads as a standalone. (Warning: might include shibari and copious amounts of rope)

What a great to end this series.
Jasper owns Tabletop Tavern with 2 friends. His life has not been easy. First demanding parents who kicked him out when he came out...to numerous hookups who he never let in. He never let anyone get close. He has a crush on Matt, who owns a nearby cafe. He thinks it will never go anywhere be case Matt is straight.
Matt, too has issues. Every woman he's ever dated breaks up with him. He wonders what's wrong with him.
He and Jasper know each other. They agree to go to a Shibari workshop together. Matt starts to feel attracted to Jasper and realizes he's bi. There are many pitfalls on their road to HEA. Both personal and business. Great storyline, side characters, humor angst and steam.

Love this quote from the book: “This was what humanity could do when they used their powers for good. When they came together to support each other, to lift each other up.”
After so many obstacles and disappointments in their lives, Jasper Tanaka and Matt Reed find in each other what was missing in their lives. There will be sad moments but fist-pump moments too. Really interesting how the author chose to end the series. Wasn’t all that pleased with the political issues incorporated, but it made the plot so…all’s well that ends well. This book had more steam than I found in previous books in this series. I have not read them all so those might have been outliers. If you like M/M romance with lingering looks and attraction from afar until they get it together, you will want to read this book.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.

I'm addicted and never want it to end. I'm so excited to read the spin-offs. Literally heartbroken thinking this was the last ever book of this fantastic series. It's a great easy, flirty fun read woth plenty of steamy scenes. Love every bit of it and the characters backstreet are always so relatable. Love love love

What a story! Fighting to keep a business open, having wonderful friends and family, finding the love of your life. These are just a few things happening in this book. It was well written and I thoroughly appreciate the book.

What a fantastic conclusion to this series! If you've read any of the first 5 books, you'll find it's just as charming, with all of the beautiful friendships, characters who are a little wounded and a lot resilient, and romance brimming with love, comfort, and support. Plus, there's the same steam you can count on, and Matt and Jasper have particularly strong sexual chemistry on top of their amazing emotional connection. It's basically 2 years of simmering attraction that comes to a delicious boil.

Both MCs are honestly cinnamon rolls, just in slightly different ways. Matt is gooey soft and sweet all over. He's had his heart broken one too many times, and his self-esteem is at a serious low. As a big guy, the women he's dated always find he's not as dominant as they think he'll be - as he think he should be. And Jasper is gooey soft and sweet, but also maybe a little overbaked and crispy on the outside. Only a few people work to get to the soft center, and Matt is lucky enough to be one of them. The way the come together (no pun intended lol) through exploring kink and a D/s sexual dynamic demonstrates the beauty power exchange can bring. Jasper finds he feels more confidence, safety, and peace as a Dom then he ever did in the more expected sub role, and Matt finds the same when he kneels for Jasper. Matt's sexual and kink awakening is particularly special. I'm a sucker for a bi-awakening, but Matt's slow realization that his draw to Jasper has always been crush is so wholesome and relatable.

On top of the romance plot, I really enjoyed the subplot involving a bigoted developer trying to take over the queer-forward SOMA district, including running Tabletop Tavern out of their rented space. It made for a great ending to the series, seeing all of the Tavern employees, plus other small business owners, come together to find a solution. It really added to Jasper's character development, too, in a really rewarding way. He has to confront so many demons, and I appreciated the way he navigates his trauma and fears. The resolution and HEA were uplifting and filled with queer joy and love.

CW: on-page PTSD episodes related to a past r*pe (off-page, talked about in brief, non-graphic details); familial homophobia and estrangement; biphobia (refuted and resolved on-page)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing series ending

I’ve loved every book in this series, but I think Jasper and Matt might have a special place in my heart. This book has some BDSM elements, although I would say they’re pretty mild on the whole, and also deals with the aftermath of sexual assault, which in my opinion was handled very sensitively, but may be triggering.

Matt and Jasper’s dynamic is lovely throughout, and getting to watch them find their way and how they fit together was lovely. We got cameos from previous main characters in the series, as well as a dramatic hostile takeover style plot line, and the introduction of some characters from a new spinoff series. There was plenty of heat and some humour, but the book deals with some heavy stuff and the more heartfelt, serious tone at times reflects that.

It’s a fantastic conclusion to the series, and although I’ll miss the characters, it’s left me excited for what’s to come in the spinoffs.
