Chestnut, Cherry & Kiwi Fruit Sponge: A final year to write home about - and mother makes 3 in Galicia (Writing Home) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 282 ratings

What do you do when you have almost, but not quite, finished renovating one ruin? Buy another of course!

Lisa and her husband, the enigmatic S, bought a ruined farmhouse in beautiful green Galicia in the remote northwest of Spain (the wet bit) seven years ago, and they are feeling the itch. Their house,
A Casa do Campo, is comfortable. They have heating, and windows, and life is good living la vida dulce.

Then they see the perfect property for Lisa’s mum, Iris,… and buy it on the spot.

Now the clock is ticking to turn a derelict cottage into a show home for this most discerning of 83-year-old ladies. Once Iris decides to move to Galicia, she wants to move now! This time, Lisa and S have a secret weapon; a veritable rainbow army of Workaway volunteers to help with the renovations. And at least this time, they are ready for the quirks of Spanish bureaucracy… or are they?

Have you ever wanted to leave the rat race, move abroad and live the good life somewhere green and bountiful?

In 2007 Lisa and her partner, the enigmatic S, left their jobs as newt catchers, and their native English shores, for beautiful green Galicia, in the remote northwest of Spain – a place of mystery and mists, Celtic legends and bagpipes, and a language of its very own. There, they set to work to self-renovate a derelict farmhouse, whilst trying to become self-sufficient and learn more about this untamed part of the Iberian Peninsula.

“We first saw
A Casa do Campo on a rainswept November morning. Mists were rising and water dripped onto the rusted kitchen range from gaping holes in the roof. There were birds’ nests in the bedrooms and bats in the hallway. Bare, dead looking trees surrounded the property which the Spanish estate agent enthusiastically promised us would be laden with fruit come August. It was love at first sight.”

Plum, Courgette & Green Bean Tarttold the story of that first 12 months living la vida dulce, The Good Life, in this beautiful green part of mainland Spain, Galicia or Galiza in its own language.

Having started to create a real home for themselves in this wild land, in 2009 Lisa and S decided to get married in Galicia.
Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly, the second book in the writing home series followed our intrepid duo through yet more quicksand in the form of a fire-breathing dragon at the local Justice of the Peace office.

Lisa and S never intended to battle any more bureaucracy. They never intended to buy another house, never mind another ruin – but after four years, memories must be fading as they set to work with gusto on their latest project.

This third book in the acclaimed Writing Home series is in two bumper parts; a final year to write home aboutcharts another glorious year of renovations, recipes and relationships whilst, and mother makes 3 in Galiciashows that age is no barrier to moving abroad and living life to the full.

There are more genuine Galician recipes including a chestnut, cherry and kiwi fruit sponge to make (that was an easy one!), and a free photo album to follow as the story unfolds.

Praise for Chestnut, Cherry & Kiwi Fruit Sponge

"Lisa writes with passion and honesty, and her love of her family and her home in Galicia, Spain, shines through every page. This time we meet Lisa’s mom, an inspirational woman who is not going to let a small matter like her age stop her from moving to Spain.

This is a delightful book which I can highly recommend."

A new adventure begins in beautiful green Galicia

A final year to write home about when mother makes three.

Dear Mum,

We bought a house...

Now we are the proud owners of not only ‘A Casa do Campo’ but ‘A Casita do Campo too’! (The Country House and the Country Cottage). The neighbours think we are crazy but that is nothing new.

The house has been empty a while and is rather derelict. The garden looks like something out of Sleeping Beauty – after the 100 years. But the house has a lovely view down the valley and will be a nice two bed cottage… eventually.

Merry Christmas! Hope you like your present!

In 2007 Lisa left a promising career as an ecologist catching protected reptiles and amphibians, and kissing frogs, to move to beautiful green Galicia in the remote northwest of Spain with her blue-eyed prince (who has since become her blue-eyed husband but that’s another story).

She divides her time equally between growing her own food, helping to renovate a semi-derelict house (or actually two… but that’s another story too) and getting out and about to discover more of the stunningly beautiful area she calls home.

Lisa is happiest outside in her huerta weeding, watching the antics of her chickens, in her kitchen cooking interesting recipes on her wood-burning range, or getting out to discover more of the world around us.

Lisa is the author of six travelogue memoirs.

The Writing Home trilogy, told through letters home to Lisa’s mum, is the story of her adventures moving to beautiful green Galicia, beginning with their first year renovating a 200-year-old stone ruin in Plum, Courgette & Green Bean Tart. A year later, in Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly, Lisa and her blue-eyed prince get married – eventually. And in Chestnut, Cherry & Kiwi Fruit Sponge, the intrepid pair renovate a second ruin, this time for Lisa's mum who moves to Galicia aged 83 and three-quarters.

In the Travels Around series, Lisa invites her readers to visit her beautiful green Galicia in Pulpo, Pig & Peppers – travels around Galicia, and to follow her and hubby S, around the world; firstly on the trip of a lifetime in Bento Boxes, Boomerangs & Red Foxes, and then once more travelling down under, this time to New Zealand at the start of a pandemic which would rock the world. Hot Pools, Paua Shells & a Pandemic brings the reader full circle back to Lisa's beautiful green Galicia.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Once again, Lisa and her husband S take an abandoned ruin and turn it into a home, this time for her mother. In this book, she tells the story of how they acquired the overgrown cottage, not far from her own home, and what they had to do to make it a great place to live. This time they use volunteer labor to do some of the work, with the volunteers coming from a variety of other countries. Lisa has a knack for finding the humor in ordinary, frustrating, or upsetting occasions, which makes this book an enjoyable read.

I have enjoyed Lisa's stories as my husband and Are about the same age and also want to move to Galicia. I'm not sure if I hadn't read the others if I would have been as engaged. But I love hearing of the everyday life of home improvement activity, cooking, gardening, and enjoying Galicia.

Galicia is a lovely place to live and Lisa definitely makes you want to move there. I find it amazing that they could build a beautiful house out of a totally derelict stone building. I am exhausted just reading this book. I am glad Stewart has retired from redoing houses—I kept waiting to hear that he had fallen off the roof or ladder or something happened to him with all the heavy work he did. I guess all the work L & s did is what kept them in shape as they seemed to eat tons of food everyday that L cooked. The house they bought for L’s mom luckily only took a couple years to turn it fit for habitation as they had Workaways to help them for just room and food. I wish I could do half of what Lisa does—even when she has back and other problems—they both just kept working. So many fiestas in their area of Spain and when you reach a certain age you get subsidized vacations. Don’t miss the recipes for some of her meals at the end of the book.

Didn't enjoy this book at all. The way it was written is awful. This is by far the worst book I have read this year!

I have loved all Lisa Rose Wright’s memoirs and been lucky enough to Beta read two of them, including this one. From her Camino walk travelogue, the trip which inspired her to move to Galicia to begin with, to this latest in the Writing Home trilogy, I’ve felt I was a personal friend reading her letters to her mum. Added to and embellishing these missives were her diary entries and her vivid descriptions of life in this very beautiful corner of north-western Spain.

Now I was already in awe of the author's and her husband S’s achievements in renovating an old and ruined Spanish farmhouse, but when they finally convince Mum to move to Spain with them, they embark on renovating yet another, and maybe even more derelict cottage for her. What a couple! This then is the memoir that covers the final period of letters home until Mum comes to join them, a move followed with some lovely chapters about how she settles to life in Spain at the grand age of 83 (all this is in the blurb, so these are not spoilers). In her letters, diary and narrative Lisa Rose Wright describes the challenges and successes of the new project with great humour and much affection for the array of Spanish tradesmen they deal with, as well as for the charming misunderstandings of their Spanish neighbours and the (sometimes hilarious) help they received from volunteer Workaways.

It’s a rich feast of experiences for the reader that includes everything from headaches with Spanish bureaucracy to ‘downtime’ visits to fiestas, historic towns and stunning beaches.

For foodies too, there are recipes and cooking information aplenty; for animal lovers, there are triumphs and tragedies with chickens, cockerels, kittens and cats; for gardeners, there are vegetables to be grown and tips to be gleaned.

I loved it all and learnt and laughed in equal measure. This is a delightful memoir I was sorry to finish and I’m even sorrier there won’t be any more letters home (although I’m so pleased for the author and her mum that they're reunited). I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Having read book 1 and 2 I have been waiting in anticipation for book 3. I was not disappointed. Lisa and S live in Galicia in Spain. Lisa has a lovely style of writing she makes you feel you are there in their kitchen waiting for the cake to be baked and the wine to be poured.

There are lots of new adventures, new people to meet and places to visit. Special family members are welcomed and a new property renovated by the wonderful S and his helpers.

I was sad to come to the end of the book and once again I am waiting in anticipation for the next installment.
    No rush Lisa 😀

I so enjoyed this third book in the trilogy of Lisa and S's crazy move to Galicia, and the joyous arrival of Mother. You feel that you are there with them during every bonkers bit of bureaucracy, and all the joys of the chickens, and garden fruits and veggies. Add in the adventures of holidays and days out for festivals and events and you have a marvellous eclectic mix that transports you to a happy place. I did not want it to end, thank you Lisa.

In the absence of real holidays in the sun in these pandemic times, reading another slice of autobiography from somebody lucky enough to be living in Galicia is the next best thing. I am so glad that the author's mother was at last able to join her in her Spanish home. The writing is descriptive and addictive - we want to know what happens next!

I have read all Lisa’s books and found them very readable. I only gave 4 stars because a bit of the grammar is bad in my humble opinion, which really annoys me. To start a sentence ‘Me and …..’ is one of them and since when did ‘fit’ replace ‘fitted’? I thought Lisa went to school in England, not America! Maybe it’s the people who proof read for her! The renovations seemed to take forever but sound very well done. I think her lunches would beat any cookery shows and never seem to be the same. Her family must be super healthy!
