4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 62 ratings

Red Dragons. Black Comedy. White-Knuckled Adventure.

Viktor’s magic is turning him into a dragon. And it’s
not pretty.

To save his friends who've bumbled into a deadly ambush, Viktor draws too deeply on the power of the Dragon Well, and now a magical tumor has begun to change him...one scale at a time.

Viktor sets off on an irreverent quest for a cure that will lead him to a remote sanitarium. Here, he will uncover a mad doctor’s strange experiments, a stubborn dwarf with stinky feet, and rumors of an ancient mirror that may hold the key to Viktor’s very survival.

As a mustache-twiddling secret society of dragon fanatics closes in, Viktor must choose between the power his transformation offers, and the hope of finding a cure.

To the fabled Tyrant’s Tomb, Viktor races the mysterious Thule Society, where deadly traps and cryptic puzzles protect a treasure of unspeakable power. With every heartbeat the tumor’s corruption spreads. Can a court dandy and a disgraced scholar help Viktor find his cure? Or is it too late to save the city from a mad doctor’s dark designs?

A very fun fantasy read with a ton of humor and excitement! Loved this book. It's destined to be on the big screen someday. Hopefully a trilogy!

This is a fantasy set in a different place. Lots of different threads that ended up together. I really liked it!

This is the first book to actually wake me up the more I read! If you're into a little magic, dragons, intrigue and characters you feel like you know in real life then stop reading reviews and download this book!

I used to love reading fantasy and sci fi as a young person, but as I aged I switched to non-fiction. I really wanted to rediscover this old friend, and this book really helped. I took me a while to "buy in" to the story but when it happened I was happily hooked. Very much looking forward to the next installment.

City in the Dragon's Eye is a solid introduction to Dragon Reich series. I enjoyed the pacing and intricate world building, setting the stage for future adventures. The magic system was interesting and left much to build upon in the future books. Overall the book left me excited for the next installment, a worthy effort and entertaining read.

Jordan Loyal Short has done it again! Different tale from his first trilogy, The Dreadbound Ode, City in the Dragon’s Eye grips the reader equally as quickly with riveting development of the main characters, Viktor, Devin, and Izola. Can’t wait for the next installment.

I'm going to start with saying that you need to outright enjoy traditional teenage boy humor. Lots of dick jokes, lots of humorous insults, lots of making light of heavy situations. If that's your jam, then this book is likely for you! Unfortunately for me, I think the type of humor got old quickly, which lowered my enjoyment of the story as a whole. The stakes were high--which I loved--but none of the characters actually treated their situations with due respect. I think I wanted more tension, rather than silly haha humor deflating everything.

That being said, the plotline itself was quite interesting to me! I was absolutely hooked by the beginning, and wanted to see how Viktor's fate turned out (I think this is where I was thrown off--the beginning is intense, and I was expecting the rest of the book to follow that example. Instead, it goes way more into the humor aspect as the story continues). I liked the multiple POVs and getting to see a bit more of how the different types of magic worked, as well as the different cultures around the world. I do wish there was more of this, though. We only get a glimpse of magic and culture and worldbuilding--but I wanted to be dumped into that world. I wanted it to wash over me and immerse me completely. Instead, we just get our big toe dipped in.

The characters were intriguing in that they all had different backstories and motives. The antagonists are classic evil villains, and the protagonists are all brought together quite conveniently and cleanly. In fact, a little too conveniently--everything happened a bit too easily. But again, that follows the whole humor aspect of the book!

Overall, if you like dick jokes and perhaps are new to fantasy, this would be a good book for you. The magic/worldbuilding is minimal, so if hardcore fantasy books intimidate you, this would be a good start! This is also perfect for anyone craving a cool, sometimes intricate story, but with a lighthearted feel.

This had a good story in it. At times it felt like it was jumping around too much trying to tell the storiez of all the characters and was tied together at the end.

Imagine a world where using too much power gives you magical cancer, creating dragon tumors that not only turn you into a social pariah but also promise certain death within a few years. That’s the world Viktor lives in. And after a heroic moment in battle, he finds himself with a tumor, disgraced, and forced to leave behind everything he knows in the search for a cure.
    A great set up, right?
Jordan Loyal Short does an excellent job with Viktor. He’s a complex character who has distinct needs and finds himself in several situations along the way that allow some character growth. More time could be spent on Viktor’s emotional reactions to several dark events that occur along the way, but the book focuses more on moving the rollicking plot forward rather than delving into emotions.
The other two main POV characters are a bit of a mixed bag. Izola, a scholar who gets involved with the quest, has an interesting backstory and I was quickly invested in her plights. However, Devin, the third main character, was the opposite. I found his sections difficult to get through, and often somewhat disconnected from the story. Usually I love the witty court dandy character, but I think I was so invested in Viktor’s story that, whenever I reached one of Devin’s POVs, I found myself hoping it wouldn’t last long. As the book goes on, Devin’s sections intertwine with the others and it all makes sense, but I still liked him least of the three.
Loyal Short has a good eye for description, bringing this gaslamp fantasy setting to life. There was a distinct Victorian, pseudo-German style to the setting, and I really enjoyed the world. Two nations at war with deep-seated prejudices, dragon cults, the wealthy preening about engaging in frivolities, and scientific facilities engaged in nefarious activities. There’s a complex magic system hinted at, but I expect more of that will be revealed in future books in the series.
While this is not a perfect book, the humor and world-building outweigh the sometimes clunky prose and pacing concerns. If you’re looking for a fun read with intrigue, evil cults, and dick jokes, then look no further. This book is perfect for fans of fantasy adventure, especially readers who like some humor in their books.
I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!
