Top reviews from the United States

I was introduced to Clarke's work through his blog. One thing that became immediately apparent was that the man is prolific. He posts a short story most days of the week and writes in-depth reviews of Stephen King's work from beginning to end. So my appetite was whetted to try out one of his longer stories, hence my picking up of his novel, Behind our walls.
This is a post-apocalyptic tale whose strength is its characters. There isn't much plot-wise that you might not have met before, but it is the development of the characters that binds you to the story and keeps you reading until the end. Early on in the novel, the reader understands there has been a nuclear event and much of the post-strike conflict results from the different factions, vying for supremacy, order or simply survival.
I would say that the story has a young adult feel to it, but be warned there are some dark moments, albeit not so explicitly described as to make this 18+ (in my view). As a self-published work the formatting sometimes reveals the odd typo, but nothing too numerous or jarring to shake the reader out of the story.
In conclusion I would recommend this book to those who love post-apocalyptic scenarios, but are looking for rich character interaction as opposed to violent gore or horror elements. It was an engaging read and I think we're going to be seeing some more first class output from Chad Clarke in the future.

Chad Clark knows how to write, and from the initial pages I knew I could trust him to deliver. Really good stuff here, and the visuals from several poignant and blood-curdling passages I'll have with me always. A most haunting and gruesome treasure chest of blood, pain, betrayal, and especially hope.

Behind Our Walls explores the struggles, both external and internal, that Sophie, an intrepid female survivor, must face in the aftermath of global catastrophe. The tale is well-written, full of vivid description, and rife with conflict. Clark manages to present us with a different sort of post-apocalyptic monster- and it is something altogether more satisfying than zombies.

The interesting thing about post-apocalyptic fiction is that it becomes a sort of character study. You'd think we'd want to know more about "how" the world ends, a virus, flesh-eating zombies, alien invasion the likes of War of the Worlds, something. Sometimes, the best apocalyptic stories are stories about us. Stories about what we do when faced with uncertainty. When the warm fuzzy blanket of banality falls to a cold stone floor, what will you do? This is my first foray into the mind of Chad A. Clark, and it won't be my last. The work here was very daring. While most writers focus on the Hollywood action of "how-it-all-happened," Clark focuses on "what to do we do now?" Now that the wall has fallen, do we rebuild another? I find it interesting that while most would indeed write a book with a modern definition of "apocalypse," being the end of the world, humanity, etc. etc., instead, Clark gives us a story that defines the original Greek definition of "apocalypse," which means a disclosure of knowledge, and an lifting of the veil, a revelation. And he presents his revelation in a tradition mode of storytelling, delivering both suspense and drama, around the family unit.

This was a bi of a different apocolyptic book.It was the story of what was left of a family and the blame they put on one daughter. She knows she's a scapegoat ,yet keeps trying to lead them to safety.Rebecca Prtese was a fine narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this. The story was compelling, suspenseful, and full of intrigue. It had a great plot but was also introspective and highly character-driven, which is the kind of novel I generally prefer. Most editors will tell you that although plot will draw your attention to a book initially, it is character interest that makes us keep reading. That is what we have here. I grew to know the main character, Sophie, and struggled alongside her. I didn't want it to end.

This book is incredibly well done, and I highly recommend it.

I received this book for free at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I really enjoyed this post-apocalyptic tale, loved the characters, story and narration. I've been really into post-apocalyptic stuff lately, and this was a nice addition :) Crazy intense thriller without too much gore (I don't mind gore at all, mind you), and really enjoyed it. Definitely an interesting and unique approach, if you like TWD you'll love this :) I'd definitely recommend giving it a listen, all in all great great book! :)

I was skeptical. As a fan of his short stories, I wasn’t sure if he could turn it into a full-blown novel. He proved me wrong.

I originally bought this book for my dad. In short order I was given it back with instructions to read it. Read it. Read it. I did and am so glad I took the leap and bought this one!

Hope to see more novels from this author!

Couldn't get where the story was going - a lot of angst, profanity and immaturity (that kept getting elevated to leadership). Couldn't buy in.
