The Awakening of Claudia Faraday: The adventures of a respectable 1920s society lady (Modern women: breaking the mould Book 1) Kindle Edition
England, the 1920s. A conventional society lady’s life is about to change forever.
Claudia is becoming like her house: empty, moribund, and in desperate need of updating. Her daughters have married and gone, her husband is working overseas, there’s not a lot to look forward to.
But then a chance event jolts her out of her torpor and plunges her into the outside world, where she discovers radical changes in attitude, fashion and behaviour, sexual and otherwise. Along with her corsets and ankle-length skirts she learns to shed her inhibitions and to realise, thanks to the likes of Marie Stopes, that life can truly begin at 50.
★★★★‘A delightful novel which consistently confounds expectations.’
‘A witty page turner that every woman can identify with in their own way.’
‘Claudia is a lovely protagonist. A gentle and well intentioned woman who, in her sixth decade, is only beginning to question her wants and desires.’

About the author

Patsy Trench is a late starter as an author. She began her working life as an actress in England and in Australia, before switching to scriptwriting and script editing. She co-founded The Children's Musical Theatre of London, creating devised musicals with primary school children. She has also written lyrics for cabaret and musical theatre.
Her books comprise three non fiction accounts of early colonial Australia as seen through the eyes of her ancestors; four novels about enterprising and sometimes badly-behaved women breaking the mould in late nineteenth/early twentieth century England, and a collection of short stories about love in adversity. Her later novels are set in the world of Edwardian theatre, a time of the great and often eccentric actor-managers and also a time of enormous change, theatrically and socially.
When not writing she teaches theatre to overseas students and organises theatre tours. She is the mother of two and grandmother of one. She lives and works in London. When she's not working she's probably foraging on the Thames foreshore for ancient treasure, crocheting or mucking about with her grandson.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought this book was going to be boring but oh was I wrong!
It’s a story of a lonely wife whose husband is never home. She’s raised 3 daughters who take it upon themselves to tell her to visit their father.
She embarks on a journey and finds a quickie partner. Her senses are awakened and she decides to visit her husband but he shows up with an awful request. She visits him and they find their way back to each other. I was so happy with the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is basically about a woman who gets a late in life wake up call.
I, along with many women I'd guess, can identify. Just because we've been married a long time and have a couple of children does not mean that our relationship with our husbands is intimate enough to truly understand and appreciate sex.
This woman was lucky enough to learn some tricks and gain some confidence and when she decided to win her husband back - he was willing.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSuch a fun and fabulous read! Proper and staid English lady finds out what all the "hoople" is about when it comes to sex...man-woman sex, man-man sex, woman-woman sex, self-sex, just all kinds of sex which she embraces with a passion. Wonderful journey with Claudia and her friends in the Roaring 20's!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEnjoyable - both this and book #2. It has the jazzy, clever and entertaining tone of books written in the 1920s, but there is more going on underneath. If you like the era, and books about women’s personal journeys, these are for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDelightful story about an aging married woman who rarely sees her husband and finally comes to a sexual awakening with other men.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story tells of a mother reinventing herself after her last daughter has left home. Set in the 1920’s it has a dreamlike quality with sudden relatable flashes into life after children.

Got your attention huh? Yeah I know.
But honestly, you gotta read this book. It’s about Claudia Faraday who is married, has raised her children and is now an “empty nester” in the roaring 1920’s. Rarely seeing her husband who was never really interested in her pursuits, Claudia lived her life never really getting “the big deal” about sex. But then, when an unexpected convenience arrises, Claudia finally has the opportunity to see what she was missing. And then Claudia’s sexual revolution begins and she completely embraces her new and exciting education.
Patsy Trench writes a fun, easy and totally relatable story that translates well to current day. It’s a wonderful perspective on sex from the middle aged married woman with children who felt she had a role to play as a wife, instead of considering her own needs and pleasure as a woman. To be honest, it’s a page turner that I know every woman can identify with in their own way and will absolutely love. (And a few men would benefit from picking it up too). With a really great cast of characters and a brilliant plot, I honestly have to repeat myself and say “you gotta read this book.” Highly recommend.
Thank you so much to Patsy Trench, Rachel Gilbey from Rachels Random Resources, and Prefab Publications, for my gifted copy of this book for my honest and unbiased opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was my first experience of reading an e-book and how lucky for me that I chose one I couldn't put down. The Awakening of Claudia Faraday by Patsy Trench is a real page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed the day I spent in the company of the charming Claudia as she realised how much she had missed in life and set about hitting it! Patsy Trench is a gifted story teller - I look forward to pursuing Claudia's friend Prudence next. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected little gem
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCame across this quite by accident - I was looking for a break from my usual diet of crime & murder mysteries and found this as a free download.
It reminded me in some ways of the writing of Colette......it does focus on Claudia's 'awkening' but whilst a little graphic at times isnt crude and it is beautifully descriptive of a life and time foreign to most of us.
Would recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody should read this
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is very well written and deserves praise for that alone. Characters and plot are excellently cast and dialogue is just as you think it would be in this scenario. But the outstanding aspect is the humanity with which the author depicts the characters' struggles to understand themselves and others and life generally.
