Cold Front: An MM Hockey Romance (Michigan U Hockey Book 1) Kindle Edition
I never questioned who I was—until Eli moved in.
Niall
I don’t do complicated. As captain of Michigan U’s hockey team, my focus is on the game, not on the charming transfer student who landed in my apartment and upended my routine. Eli shouldn’t get under my skin, but he does—with his easy smiles, late-night cooking, and the way he looks at me like I’m something more than just a closed-off hockey player.
Then I kissed him. I shouldn’t have. But for one reckless moment, I let myself want. Now he’s looking at me like he’s waiting for something—something I don’t know how to give.
Because wanting Eli is dangerous. And letting him in? That might be the biggest risk of all.
Eli
A fresh start—that’s what Michigan U was supposed to be. A clean break from my past and the toxic relationship that made me forget who I was. I wasn’t looking for complications, but then I met my roommate, Niall; grumpy, brooding, and frustratingly hot and cold. He barely speaks to me, yet for some reason, I can’t stop thinking about him.
Then he kissed me. And for a moment, I thought maybe—just maybe—there might be something real between us. But when he's too afraid to call me his anywhere outside of our apartment, I wonder if I've made the same mistake again.
I should let it go. I should move on. But I know those walls aren’t just for keeping people out—they’re for keeping himself safe. And damn it, I think I want to be the one to break them down.
Cold Front is a bi- and demisexual awakening, grumpy/sunshine, college hockey romance. It features a walled-off hockey player and an optimistic transfer student navigating what it means to rely on your partner. Expect hurt/comfort vibes, on-page hockey, and an HEA.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2025Eli transfers schools to get away from his ex and ends up rooming with an unsociable, hockey god, the captain of the team, Niall. Eli is bi and attracted to the gruff captain but captain is a straight arrow or so they think. Can they each get out of their own way and come together?? You must read to see.

This was gooood. Like real good. We love a good MM romance and this hit the spot.
Eli moves across the country. From CA to MI. He’s on the run from a narcissistic relationship and wants a new start. Only he gets roomed with the grumpy dark broody guy.
Niall is the Captain of the hockey team. He’s spent the last 3 years closed off from everyone. That is until his own walking sunshine becomes his roommate.
These two hit it off right off the bat even though Niall doesn’t want to admit it. Niall struggle to make a claim on his man and Eli can’t let another person control his life or his relationships. How do they navigate this and make it out together on the other side?!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2025Niall and Eli’s story really spoke to me. Niall was so closed off, protecting himself from the hurt of letting himself care about another or going through the pain of losing someone he loved, he just built his walls higher and higher after the death of his parents. The change from his first few weeks as a freshman to the closed off, serious person he became was understandable to an extent, no one wants to actively encourage that emotional pain, but he was basically alone, not letting anyone close, until sunshiny, open, caring Eli entered his life, battering away at his walls no matter how much Niall tried to keep them up.
Eli had his own pain from a broken relationship, blaming himself for not being more aware, but he still had hope and optimism that he would come back from it and find another love. That optimism helped him stay open to others, to make connections, and to keep trying with his grumpy roommate to get over those walls.
The pancake episode, to me, was the initial crack in Niall’s walls, the opening up to possibilities of friendship and a glimpse into the Niall that had been repressed and hidden for so long. Eli was able to draw Niall out, to coax a smile or a chuckle from him, and to encourage the attraction that was between them, letting it grow into something so much more.
I was disappointed in Eli’s reaction to the meeting with Niall’s former teammate, feeling like he could have been more understanding about how new things were to Niall, and how putting Niall on the spot took him out of his comfort zone, but it was also a catalyst for Niall to do some real soul-searching and evaluate his priorities in regard to Eli, and he did step up with Chase and at the end of the game.
I had moments of empathy with Niall for his guilt and grief, his withdrawal to protect himself, and the new feelings that he had with Eli, and I could empathize with Eli and his feeling of betrayal from Niall. I also had such good feelings when things were going well between them, as Niall was learning more about himself and his sexuality, the caring way Eli introduced Niall to new experiences and helped with his schooling, and how they found their way back to each other. I smiled and felt very satisfied with the outcome as the two realized each had found the ONE meant for them.
Very realistic, relatable characters, the hockey world building enhanced the story, and the counselor’s advice resonated with me as a way to face past feelings of guilt and grief, something I could have benefitted from a few years ago. A beautiful story, one I would recommend as well worth the read.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2025** spoiler alert ** This was my first book from Denver Shaw and I definitely will be going back for more. Cold Front is a bit of a slow-burn since each character has trauma they're trying to overcome, however it wasn't so slow that the story feels lagging in any way. Niall experiences a life-altering traumatic event and closes himself off from everyone other than showing up for hockey, which pretty much becomes his escape. Eli transfers from California after ending a manipulative relationship and is determined to rebuild his life. After becoming roommates, we start to see Eli slooooowly cracking the protective layer Niall has put up just by trying to rebuild his own life and happiness. The first kiss scene was swoon worthy as it coincides with Niall sharing parts of his past with Eli but also opening himself back up to the things he used to do with his dad. All of the feels in this scene!
The pinch points of the book did unfortunately fall a bit flat for me as they seemed to be teasing at some angst or big emotion but never really got there. Niall calling Eli his roommate in front of a friend and hurting Eli's feelings (they just sort of talk it out when they get back together but Niall never shows any growth or change before that happens, AND they have sex for the first time without this resolution), and then Eli's ex stalking him throughout the book (Niall just says "Eli is my boyfriend" and Chase just goes away) just sort of hung there weirdly. They both felt like they were supposed to be bigger points in the story but ultimately had little resolution or angst/pain at all. Having no angst or real pinch points in a book is totally fine (I love my fluff!), but having them there and then sort of just glossing them over felt a bit anticlimactic for me.
Overall, I did really enjoy this story and plan to read more of Denver's books asap! The ending was super sweet and just the way I love my books to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it in One Sitting!
This book pulled at all of my heartstrings! Denver shaw has a way of weaving the emotions into her stories, rivaled by only a few. This book was WOW, just WOW. It’s slow angst, slow burn, high emotional read. I loved Niall. I loved Eli, and together they were perfect! These reads are like a warm soft blanket on a cold snowy night. They are comforting, and hold on to you and make you not want to do anything but read their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking Risks.
MM, bi/ demisexual Awakening, Grumpy/Sunshine, Hurt/Comfort, College, Hockey, Romance. The first book in the series and it's a great introduction to the team. Great characters, wit and humour, first time, steam, past hurt. A fast paced plot with some tearjerker moments, lots of action and drama leading to their hea.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh my
This was such a lovely read, these boys are too cute & I can’t wait to read more of the series. I think possibly the book started in 3rd person POV and the few typos to this point did make me lose concentration but I did really enjoy the book
