Even though I’m a CELTA qualified English teacher, I’ve been in your position before…

When I was 22 years old, I left the UK to teach English in Spain and later on in life I moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and lived there for 11 years teaching English and running a language school.

In these two countries, I made it my mission to speak Spanish and Portuguese…

I studied hard… reading newspapers, books, listening to the radio and podcasts, taking notes of all the new vocabulary and reviewing it…

But there was one problem…

I found it extremely difficult to speak these languages in front of people due to a lack of confidence.

I thought I was being judged on mistakes I made and was not confident with my vocabulary. Consequently, I felt anxious, nervous, and ashamed.

This led to blocks and not being able to participate properly in group conversations.

I had to do something about it because it was having a negative effect on my mood and self-esteem.

So I did something about it… I learned the skill of confidence.

And confidence speaking English as your second language is a skill which can be learned.

Born in England, Steven is a business English coach, writer, and entrepreneur.

In 2001, he qualified as a CELTA (Cambridge) teacher and started his journey helping professionals improve their English.

After several years teaching in-company lessons with top schools in Spain and Brazil, he set up his own language school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which provided lessons for company professionals.

Steven grew the school to more than 25 teachers and 500 students across a variety of corporations. Even when running the company he continued to coach executives for fluency improvement, and prepare them for meetings and business presentations in English.

Steven has been hired by multinationals to prepare top executives for business presentations in English. He has over 10,000 hours of teaching and coaching experience.

After 9 years he sold the school and decided to focus primarily on his passion for coaching professionals and writing about business English and fluency.

In 2015, he started his new venture – Impactful English, where he provides one-on-one English coaching for executives and writes weekly blog articles.

Over the years, Steven noticed that one of the main challenges for executives was a lack of confidence speaking English in important situations at work, such as meetings and presentations. As a solution to this, he wrote the ebook, “How to Become a Confident English Speaker at Work”.

    This is a great book if you, in spite of dominating your second language, still has issues when speaking in a professional setting. To me this book was a really helpful read, specially the self talk and the uncomfortable zone parts! The tips for to give a work presentation are amazing; I do have an excerpt of this chapter in my work drawer right now.
    I am also really bad at preparing myself in a positive way, like I will talk myself down into all the awful scenarios I can think of. Steve's book was excellent to prepare me to deal with this type of mindset.
    It is also clear that he's read extensively, and is a writer who can funnel a huge amount of information for you in this concise language-at-work gem. Give it a read now, thank me later.

    This book is a perfect learning tool for students who really want to speak up in any kind of situation. Steven guides the student to discover their own potential and orientates in a way that anyone can prepare themselves to give a business presentation and make the most of professional opportunities. It is essentially a coaching session for language learners, but the strategies can also be applied to other areas of life.
