Carrie is a widow with an eight year old son, Eric. Carrie meets Italian Officer Jake Stafani because he caught Eric trying to break into his house. Carrie doesn't like cops because a cop had killed her husband. Jake is going through some tough decisions in his life at the time they met. Carrie and Jake are unable to ignore the chemistry they both felt when they first meet. Jake and Carrie's romance was sweet, steamy, and sensual. The relationship between Jake and Eric was heartwarming. I really enjoyed the story. It gets your attention right away. I couldn't put it down. I finished in one day. You get steamy romance, values in life, relationships in our lives, and HEA. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and other books by Karen Docter.     I LOVE a good character-driven book and this one had that in spades! Characters had depth, complexity, and likeability. Jake is my kind of alpha male, strong but with a soft side that Carrie and her son easily breach. Watching their love unfold was fascinating. Jake loves his SWAT career but has to take time to recover from an injury. Carrie lost a loved one in a SWAT event (Jake wasn't involved in that one) and has a strong aversion to anything cop-related, especially SWAT. So he hides his true profession from her, intent on making her see the man first and not the uniform.

    The electricity between Jake and Carrie is instant, but she is very wary. She loved and lost once, could she take a chance again? Would Jake be able to break down the barriers around her heart and help her to see him as a man and not as a police officer doing dangerous work?

    Great read! Highly recommend!

    This is well-written romance centering on a stressed out cop, Jake, following in his father's footsteps, but with a big heart and a widow, Carrie, whose husband was killed by accident in a bank robbery. Carrie's son Eric and his friend are trying to impress some older kids and are set to break into Jake's house, not realizing he's a cop. Jake walks Eric home and Carrie is faced once again with dealing with the blue uniform. Only this time, the man in the uniform is on forced vacation and a hunk who sets her motor running. Fortunately, the feeling is mutual and the major barrier is Carrie's negative attitude warring with her desire. On Jake's side, he's dealing with guilt and stress, as well as a recent breakup. Lots of emotion and feelings throughout the story, including Carrie questioning how families of cops (and others who put themselves in danger every day) cope with the potential loss. A few tissues are in order at key points, but readers also should be aware of graphic sexual content.

    This is a great romance book!
    Jake Stafani is a S.W.A.T Officer and wants to save the world. He has just moved into a new neighborhood as he is forced to take a vacation. He is not sure what to do with his time. That is until he comes home and finds a boy in is backyard going to do damage. He takes the boy to his home across the street and meets is mother. When he leaves all he can think about the boy and his reaction to the boy’s mother. Jake wants to make sure the boy does not join a gang and end up like the last boy he knew.
    Carrie Padilla had been a single mom on her own for six years. Her husband was killed by a S.W.A.T. team and she does not care for police now. When she has a cop show up on her door with her son in the middle of the night she is taken back and at a loss.
    When Jake meets Carrie sparks fly. Jake is more than happy to see where they will lead, but Carrie can’t see him as anything but a cop. Yes, she thinks he is hot and might want more but she is not willing to go there. Jake will do anything to change Carrie’s mind. Jake is also becoming very close with her son. Can Jake create a family or will it all be for nothing?

Her male counterpart, Jake, is not just an ordinary cop as she believes, but a member of the exact S.W.A.T team connected to the experience, and has serious problems of his own after a mission gone wrong. Both of them are characterized really well, and the way their relationship develops - slowly but surely, against all odds - is a great and suspenseful read which totally takes you in and makes you root for them.

    This was the first novel I have read that this author has written and I really liked it. I loved the story and I loved the interaction between the characters. I love a novel that when you finish you feel happy, this novel did this for me. To me there is nothing better than when a book grabs your attention from the first chapter until the last. This novel did this for me, I really liked it. I will be sure to be looking to see what this author has coming next.

    This wasn't a bad read at all. You are dealing with strong independent characters but true to life. They are all believable even the kids in the story. Life struggles everyone or anyone could be dealing with but it has its funny witty moments also. It catches you on page 1 and you don't want to put it down till the end. A few moments where you get sad but what true relationship worth fighting for doesn't have it's ups and downs just a way of life to figure out how to deal with the problems.

    I really enjoyed the dynamics of Jake and Carrie’s relationship. They were perfect for one another. They each complemented each other’s strengths. Carrie finally got through all her fears about him being a police officer and the found their happiness. Really enjoyed the book.

Relationships really are about working things out together, and sometimes a fast tracked love is better then years together before reaching that same crossroads. Beautiful story.
