But something happened to her over the summer. Gone is the sparkly, outgoing woman he knew, replaced by a shadow of herself, weighed down by grief and responsibilities.
She insists she doesn’t want a relationship. And at first he’s content to just be her friend … and then her friend with benefits.
But when he pushes for more, will she acknowledge there’s something real between them? Or will pushing just mean pushing her away?

The story Coping Skills (Players of Marycliff University Book 5) by Jerica MacMillan is a sports/romance book. I loved reading the next book in the Players of Marycliff series. It had me hooked from the very beginning and I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the last page. I loved the characters of Elena Martinez and Daniel Carter. Elena is a smart, beautiful, independent woman. She also is someone who has a lot going on in her life after her father’s accident and the extra responsibilities that have been placed upon her. Between keeping her father’s business open, starting school again, and planning for her future she has a lot of stress. She also feels guilty that she wants to continue with the career plans she has always had. She could use a distraction. She finds one in Daniel. Daniel can’t wait to see Elena again. An attraction to her started over the summer and now he hopes to take the next step and start a relationship with her. Daniel is not like other members of the football team. He doesn’t want casual, he wants to be in a committed relationship. Elena is only looking for being friends with benefits and Daniel gives in in order to be with her. Daniel is also someone with a caring heart. When he hears of what Elena has been going through he wants to help and support her. Will he be able to help Elena through the stressful times that she is having? Will he be able to convince Elena to take the next step and go from a casual relationship to a committed one? There comes a time when things become strained between these two and there is anger and hurt feelings. What does the future hold for both Daniel and Elena? Will they be able to find happiness together or will they end up walking away from each other? This is a story that had my emotions going up and down. This is a couple who care for each other and I wanted them to find happiness. This is the next wonderful story in a series that I have fallen in love with. The author is a wonderful storyteller who creates amazing characters. I can’t wait to read what she writes next! This story does have adult situations that include steamy love scenes. It would be recommended for those 18 years of age or older.

I've been following this series since the beginning. And like with many series, some books you may like better than others. This was one that I certainly liked better.
Daniel and Elena were first introduced in a previous book. I liked them immediately so I was not only happy that they were getting their own story, but more so that it would be together. Elena seemed like a good friend and Daniel a really good guy in general. This book showed me even more.
Daniel wasn't your typical nice guy or bad boy. He wasn't a typical jock or nerd. He was this great blend of nice guy who was also a nerdy jock. He had a big heart that he wanted to share and after meeting Elena, that's who he wanted to share it with.
Elena on the other hand has just had the worst summer of her life and she isn't dealing well. Daniel presents as an amazing distraction and she can't resist. But the stressors in her life begin to be too much and Daniel's special brand of charm and persistance my not be enough to overcome Elena's hurt and emotional walls.
I loved the feeling and emotions in this story. I really connected with both characters, Daniel especially. I had those great book moments where I hurt when they hurt and I sometimes wanted to throttle them. But I always kind of understood where they were coming from. It helped me to just enjoy as I read and helped with my overall connection.
I continue to enjoy Jerica's work and look forward to more from her in future.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017I love every book in Jerica MacMillan’s emotionally charged series, Players of Marycliff University. It’s one adorable, hunky guy after another in these gorgeously written stories. The heroes are so charming, sexy, and chivalrous! The heroines are intelligent, fun, spunky, and most definitely have a mind of their own.
Coping Skills is a poignant and tender story that will give your feelings a workout and your psyche a book hangover but believe me, it’s well worth it.
Elena is heartbroken, exhausted, and just barely possesses the will to return to Marycliff after the devastating summer her family has experienced. She is relieved to escape to Marycliff, however, guilt and sorrow have cast a shadow over her once carefree and fun personality. She has avoided Daniel for weeks but the chemistry they had during their brief fling returns in full force when she sees him again. She knows it’s wrong to let him believe they could be more than friends with benefits, but he’s the one person she knows she can count on to make her troubles disappear, if only for a little while.
The way Daniel cares for Elena will melt your heart. He is patient and strong and wants desperately to help her heal. He’s willing to wait it out until Elena is able to commit to the love he knows they both feel for each other. Until she pushes him away one time too many. He has been used before and won’t subject himself to that again.
This is such a lovely story about coping with change and tragedy ! As always, Ms. MacMillan’s characters are beautifully defined, their dialogue is realistic and their journey full of meaning.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023This book was ok. I feel like this series has been mostly a 3 to 3.5 star series for me. Because I’ve gone this far in it I will continue to read the remaining books in the series but I’ve enjoyed other series by this author way more than this one. I liked how the topic (grief) in this one was heavier and made you think more so than anything.

Coping Skills

Coping Skills is the fifth book in the Players of Marycliff University series. It could be read as a standalone but having read the previous books I would highly recommend that they are read in order.
I’m not quite sure what I was expecting from Elena and Daniel’s story but it wasn’t this at all. This was such a beautifully written and emotional story. I love how the author manages to create characters that you instantly fall in love with. They each have their own problems that the author writes about so well.
I can’t even imagine how Elena felt after her father’s accident and the events that happened after that. I could really sense how this had affected her, not just the relationship between her and her father but also how it was affecting her other relationships. She was a head strong and independent character who didn’t want to let anyone in to help her – this is definitely a defence mechanism for her to stop herself form getting hurt.
Daniel was a really lovely character, I could really feel the caring nature that he had and how much Elena meant to him. Like Elena, he also had his own issues to deal with.
I think out of all the stories in this series so far this was the most emotional one for me. I felt a real connection to Elena and Daniel and was really rooting for them as a couple.
As always it’s lovely to see the characters from previous stories feature in this one too and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Instant love for me
Coping skills by Jerica Macmillan is the fifth book in the players of marycliffe university series, and focuses on Daniel and Elena. I loved this book and I feel that it is a great addition to the series. Daniel is such a sweet guy that it is hard to find a fault with him at all, and Elena really needs his steadying presence at this time of her life. Of course the physical chemistry is off the charts as well!
Jerica Macmillan has never disappointed me with her books before and this is no exception. I find her writing style to flow extremely well and I am always instantly hooked in even if I’m not liking a particular character (which is usually a deal breaker for me). I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
